HIGH SCHOOL IS NOTHING WITHOUT having its popular cliques and caste systems that you usually encountered in television drama series, movies, webtoons, animes or even in ePUBs and teen, young adult novels. You'll encounter the jocks, those cool, sporty fellas that usually called the cafeteria kings because of their popularity rooted from being an athlete. Jocks are nothing without the cheerleaders, considered as their leading ladies—those drop-dead gorgeous girls that top not just in dancing but also in flirting and seducing (err, sorry for the terms but that really happens in reality). You can also encounter the geeks, those smarty-pants fellas that excel academically and reign on the school ranking every term. You'll encounter the bullies and the queen bees, the fellas that you'll never wish to meet. They're sort of one of the highest popular cliques and grabs the highest position in the caste system next to the jocks and the popular, good looking rich (rotten) kids. And lastly, the basket case—they're the ones who are not included in the popular cliques and belongs to the lowest position of the caste system. In short, they're the commoners, the civilians, the n.o.bodies, the ordinaries, the losers—and Song Jin Hee knows she belongs to them.

But right now, this is not the clichéd popular cliques that she usually encountered nor read on books and TV series. She'll meet these people that who knows, might be the ones who hold the whole of South Korea's economy.

"Welcome to the cla.s.sroom of the elites, nouveau riche."

Jin Hee gasped silently when the people inside the cla.s.sroom stopped chatting just to spare her a look. Some of them looked at her with curiosity, starting to make inaudible conversation with each other while some of them just looked at her in nonchalance. Even the guy writing on the whiteboard stopped on what he's doing just to spare her a look.

"Ah Young-ah~ long time no see! How are you?" their gazes settled at the guy who's now skipping like an idiot towards them.

He was about to hug Ah Young but she abruptly raised her hand to stop him. "Seriously, Jeong Suk? You talked like you haven't seen me for ten years."

"Even if it's just one day without seeing you, I already miss you," Jeong Suk winked at her.

"Shut up, Jeong Suk. You're giving me gooseb.u.mps, seriously," Ah Young grimaced as she rolled her eyes.

His eyes settled on Jin Hee that made her gasped for the umpteenth time. "Oh, who's with you?"

"Our new cla.s.smate, Song Jin Hee. Jin Hee, this is Kim Jeong Suk—" before Ah Young could finish her sentence, Jeong Suk held Jin Hee's hand.

"The moment I laid my eyes on you, my heart fluttered like crazy," her eyes widen when he pulled her hand towards his lips and kissed it.

What the…

Before he could say a word, Ah Young pulled her away from him. "Drop that sugar-coated, flirty words of yours, Jeong Suk."

"Hey, Ah Young-ah, are you jealous?" a playful smile flaunted on Jeong Suk's face that made Ah Young roll her eyes.

"Dream in one hundred million nights, charlie!" Ah Young pulled Jin Hee towards the platform, facing their cla.s.smates.

Oh my G.o.d. What on earth…? Jin Hee can still feel the nervousness flowing in her whole system.

"Okay everyone, drop that effin' gadgets and chitchats of yours and I want all your attention here," she clapped her hands to have all their attention. Once she got it, she, then, gestured Jin Hee to them. "This girl beside me is our new cla.s.smate and she will be with us starting today until the end of the semester."

"If she can still be with us in that span of time," everyone giggled when one of their cla.s.smates b.u.t.ted in as she flipped her hair and chuckled.

Jin Hee frowned. What kind of people are they?

It really feels like I'm not accepted here.

"Oh, shut it, Mi Yeon," one of their cla.s.smates, also, b.u.t.ted in.

Mi Yeon's gazed settled on their cla.s.smate. "Don't be such a party p.o.o.per, Siel Lynette. If you don't wanna join our fun here, you're free to leave Seoul and go back to the Philippines where you really belong."

The girl named Siel Lynette nonchalantly looked at her, crossing her arms on her chest. "First of all, you're not the boss of me to order such thing and second, you don't deserve our attention so don't be such an attention seeker, susan."

Jin Hee looked at them in awe. Watching this scenario, I don't really think I can survive here. Weomae abeoji.

Mi Yeon squinted her eyes as she stood up. "What did you just called me?"

"Oh, c'mon. I don't think you're deaf to let me repeat it, Cha Mi Yeon," Siel chuckled sarcastically at her.

"You—"

"Stop it, Mi Yeon," Ah Young interrupted at last. "Let the transferee settle herself here before you continue your bickering with Santiago."

Mi Yeon pursed her lips into thin line and abruptly settled herself in her seat again as the girls beside her kept on comforting her.

"b.u.t.thurt," Siel chuckled that made her seatmate nudge her using her elbow while chuckling with her while Mi Yeon threw daggers at her secretly.

Ah Young glanced at Jin Hee with a smile. "Introduce yourself now."

Jin Hee gulped the imaginary lump on her throat and looked at her new cla.s.smates which she really regretted to do so because their silent, serious gaze met hers. Not a really good idea.

She lowered her head to breathe enough air to quenched the nervousness building inside her, whispering 'you can do this' to encourage herself before settling her gaze to them.

"G-Good morning—" she was cut abruptly when they started giggling like she just cracked a joke.

What's wrong with these people? Ugh, right. I forgot that being soft spoken is not appearing in their dictionary.

She breathed in and out before pulling a serious look on her face for them. "Hi, I'm Song Jin Hee. I'm average in many aspects and I'm very independent as a student so don't bother to accompany me and to take care of me. I'm not asking for any of your help. Nice to meet you all."

A pregnant silence filled the whole cla.s.s as she finished introducing herself to them though there are still inaudible whispers and murmurs on their seats, eyeing her like judging her which made her mentally roll her eyes.

"Okay, thank you, Jin Hee-ssi. Just look for a vacant seat. Any minute from now our teacher will arrive for the first period," Ah Young broke the silence herself as she gestured the seats in front of them. Before Jin Hee could leave the platform, someone raised his hand.

"Excuse me, I have a question to the newcomer," Jin Hee looked at the guy who's now eyeing her.

Wait a minute, he looks familiar. She stared at him for a couple of seconds before her eyes slightly widen. Right! He's that guy in the garden! On the tree branch! The one who pulled a prank on the other guy by drawing stuff on his face!

"What is it, Joo Hyuk?" Ah Young asked.

"How did you enroll yourself here?" he asked, still eyeing her. That made the inaudible whispers and conversations grew louder as everyone agreed to his question.

If Jin Hee managed to shrug the nervousness off her after introducing herself to them, now it came back like a hurricane. She could feel her heart beats erratically that might wreck her ribcage.

She stared at the guy named Joo Hyuk nervously. Does he knew something?

"Yeah, Joo Hyuk's right. How did you come here? You know, Empire Academy is really, really particular in your wealth, a.s.sets and your social status before you enroll yourself here. You came here, so that means something. What's your family's business? Is your mother or father a politician? A lawyer? A doctor? Huge personalities?" asked Mi Yeon.

"Oh! Oh! Are you related to Song Seung Hun or maybe Song Joong Ki? Is Song Ji Eun from SECRET your sister or close relative?" Mi Yeon's seatmate asked excitedly, almost squealing. "One of our cla.s.smate here is related to Kim Jong In, you know him as Kai in EXO," she pointed Jeong Suk who is now shrugging nonchalantly.

"Not this time, So Min. I don't wanna give you access to my cousin's fanmeetings again. You're like a sasaeng fan, seriously."

"I'm not!" the girl named So Min protested as she pouted. "I just admire him. That's what fans feel to their idol's, right? Right?!"

"She's beyond the qualities of a sasaeng fan," the girl beside Siel whispered.

"More like a delulu fan," Siel muttered that made them giggled.

"Shut it, So Min," Mi Yeon interrupted her. "So I was saying, what group are you? Are you an heiress in your family's business? Stocks? One of the honorable's children or…" she chuckled. "I don't think you belong to that group. The social welfare group. Are you?"

Everyone laughed at what she said. That made Jin Hee getting more and more uneasy and nervous at their reaction, making her throat dry.

They laughed at the thought that I'm a commoner. How much more if they knew I really am. I am really unsafe here. One wrong move and I'll be d.a.m.ned.

"Spill it out! Spill it out!" they chanted, forcing her to reveal her background to them. Ah Young stopped them from doing so but they didn't budge.

She closed her eyes tight as she bit her tongue, wishing that the earth will swallow her whole to escape the situation. Omeeojjeuggaing? (*this is a Jeollado dialect for "what should I do?")

"Geumanhaera. Stop bothering, everyone," everyone, especially Jin Hee, looked at the guy who's leaning on the whiteboard. He's wearing a pair of eyegla.s.ses which made him look cute in Jin Hee's eyes. "If she doesn't wanna tell us what her family's business is, then no. We don't have to force her to spill things out on its least details. As long as she's not part of your so-called social welfare group and she managed to enroll herself here, then she's an heiress."

"Oh, c'mon Min Seok-ah. Don't be such a killjoy. We just wanna know what her family's doing, you know?" Mi Yeon curled her hair using her finger while looking at Min Seok.

"I know d.a.m.n well that's not the case here, Mi Yeon-ah. You just wanna know if she's not as rich as you are. But if I were you, I shouldn't ask that. I might hurt my a.s.s once I didn't meet my expectation. I'm just protecting your ego because I don't wanna hear you whining. Just saying," he shrugged as he took off his gla.s.ses, eyeing Ah Young secretly as the la.s.s raised a thumb up for him in secret then his eyes settled on Jin Hee who's now looking at him in awe. He smiled at her that made her mouth ajar.

How could someone be so handsome? She asked herself and managed to give him a smile too.

Mi Yeon pursed her lips into thin line and crossed her arms with a huff.

"I've decided!" slightly surprised, their gazes settled on the guy who suddenly stood up with his fist raised up, looks like he just woke up from a deep slumber the way his hair was disheveled.

"What is that, Eun Jae? Are you sleeptalking or something? Seriously?" the girl beside Siel squinted her eyes at him, talking in English.

"He's being stupid again, Chae Ryung. He just woke up and talking nonsense to us right now," Siel snorted, responded to her in English.

"Nope, I'm not sleeptalking and I've decided!" he smiled widely as he clapped excitedly and pointed Jin Hee who's now staring at him, bewildered. "That I nominate that newcomer to be our cla.s.s president!"

Jin Hee's eyes widen in shock and confusion. What?!

"What comes into your mind that you decided to appoint or nominate her as our cla.s.s president? Are you sick, Eun Jae?" their other cla.s.smate asked.

"No, I'm not Dae Woong!" he protested. "Average in many aspects and I'm very independent as a student. Hey, that's what she said, right? So, I'm thinking that she really suits the position! A potential cla.s.s president for all of us. Finally, we can have one!" he grinned wider that made everyone convinced to his reason, making them nod their heads in approval.

What is wrong with the students here?! Are they into influence or something?! Jin Hee thought, more confused than what she is earlier.

"Yes, I agree!" one of their cla.s.smates raised her hand.

"I agree too!" from one, more and more from their cla.s.smates raised their hands for approval.

"I want Miss Independent to be our cla.s.s president," one of their cla.s.smates said calmly as he raised his hand, smiling at Jin Hee who's now blinking at him.

"If Prince Han Sol agreed, I agree too!" the girl behind Mi Yeon beamed as she raised her hand.

"Soo Jin! What are you thinking?! Are you stupid?!"

"What? I just voted, you know?" her seatmate (which is one of her so-called friends along with Mi Yeon) facepalmed with her stupid answer.

"Ah Young, w-what's happening?! Please help me!" Jin Hee slightly shook her arm and looked at her with a pleading, puppy eyes.

"Hey, you're already the crowd's choice. They're in the high positions and they badly wanna appoint you as Cla.s.s 12-1's cla.s.s president so I can't do anything about it," Ah Young shrugged and grinned which made Jin Hee sulk internally as she scratched her head.

"So our cla.s.s president is the newcomer, Song Jin Hee!" Jeong Suk and Tae Yang declared as the clapped their hands happily and that made Jin Hee sulk more.

"Hi, Song Jin Hee-ssi," her eyes settled on Min Seok who's now outstretching his hand on her. "I'm Moon Min Seok, your external vice president of this cla.s.sroom."

Your. That made Jin Hee smile as her cheeks started to shade in pink. She accepted his hand for a handshake. Wait a minute. "External vice president? So, Ah Young is the internal vice president?"

"What? Me? G.o.d, no. I'm the secretary," Ah Young answered for him.

"So, who's the internal vice president?"

As if it was a cue, the cla.s.sroom's double doors opened loudly, making everyone's attention on it. A guy with a fancy black overcoat from Armani entered the scene, walking towards Min Seok.

"Gawd, the King is here!" the girls started squealing their lungs out.

"Oh, c'mon. Not that dramatic entrance again," Ah Young muttered as she crossed her arms over her chest.

He's familiar…

"Yoon Baek Hyeon," her gaze settled on Min Seok once again. "He's the internal vice president. Your internal vice president."

My what?! She's shock for the nth time.

"What's with the commotion?" his voice is dripping with authority as his eyes settled on her while asking Min Seok. "Who is she?"

"Song Jin Hee, our new cla.s.smate and our cla.s.smates appointed her as our cla.s.s president," Min Seok answered.

Baek Hyeon's looked at him. "Without any opponents?"

"Yes. They selected her by their choice," he answered again.

Baek Hyeon chuckled as he spoke in English. "Really? By those cla.s.sy idiots?" his eyes settled on Jin Hee. "What those guys think about you makes everything more interesting."

"Waaaaah!!!"

"Jin Hee-yah, stop whining! What is wrong with you? What happened?" covering his ears, Mama Shin walked towards her.

She sniffed before answering. "Sukbu—I mean, gomo, please let me transfer to another school! I can't stand that school! Please, just please let me transfer! I don't care about the scholarship! That school, my cla.s.smates, everything! They're driving me nuts!"

"Aigoo, stop sulking my dear. That school is too exclusive and prestigious for a normal citizen to enter. Every student at your age dreamed to enter that school but don't have the luck that you have. They can't enter even the kindergarten level because they must be rich since birth if they want to enter that school. You should be grateful that you're lucky enough to enter that school," Mama Shin said.

Jin Hee couldn't help but sigh as she looked at Cheonsa, her pet goose and played the small feather she's holding on her beak. She sighed once again and hugged goose.

"Yah, Jin Hee-yah! Stop hugging your duck and come here! I'll fix your hair! It's really dry!" Mama Shin tried to pull her towards him but she didn't budge.

"She's not a duck, gomo. She's a goose. A goose!" she sighed once again.

"Duck or goose, they're all the same species like birds and chickens!" Mama Shin told her and tapped her shoulder. "You shouldn't push away the opportunity, my dear. You want to help your family, right? So, just close your eyes, ignore everything that's happening around you and continue your studies there until you graduate. That's it!"

Her lips twitched to a sarcastic smile and shook her head. "How will I do that if those elites just appointed me as their cla.s.s president?"

"How's everything?" the school chairman asked at the princ.i.p.al when the latter gave him the golden folder.

"So far, so good sir. Even if there are so many dropouts, there are many transferees that came here as of this school semester," the princ.i.p.al answered. "And… something weird happened in Grade 12 Cla.s.s 1, that cla.s.sroom full of high-profile elites."

The school chairman paused on what he's doing and looked at him in curiosity. "Why?"

"The elites just appointed their cla.s.sroom president. It's the very first time that they appointed someone to become their leader wherein the first place, they don't want to be under the superiority of a person because they call themselves as superiors. This is totally weird," the princ.i.p.al answered.

"I bet it's Yoon Baek Hyeon," the school chairman sipped his coffee while signing some papers. "He's the only one who can control those brats."

"I'm expecting that, sir. But unfortunately, it's not him," the school chairman stopped on what's he's doing and looked at the school princ.i.p.al, bewildered.

"What do you mean?"

"It's the scholar and the only one student that is not an heiress who entered that cla.s.s, named Song Jin Hee, was selected by that cla.s.s as their president," the school princ.i.p.al answered.

"Seriously?" he scoffed a sudden laugh. "What is on the minds of those brats that they decided to appoint someone they barely know?" he flipped the golden folder open, revealing Song Jin Hee's profile. "In any case, there's a reason why this girl exists in that cla.s.s. And if the reason is to tame those brats' monstrous att.i.tudes and disgusting laws, this will be exciting."
