Chapter 6 A Warrior Who Didn't Exercise Restraint (II)
Jiu's sword, flashing a bright light, flew up toward Du's meaty paw and ugly head in the shortest time possible and along the most direct path possible.
The light dimmed right away. When the crystal sword was sheathed behind Jiu's back, half of Du's hand and his entire head were falling from their previous positions.
Du's disdain and disrespect had turned into shock and a cry for mercy, but it was too late.
For about ten seconds, the entire army camp was silent. The only sound was Du's hand, head, and his chunky body hitting the ground. Almost 1,000 people had momentarily lost their power to breathe.
This was a battlefield more shocking than the battlefield from a few hours ago. This was more amazing than the magic displayed by the mystic from Lin Lan's family.
While most people were still in shock, a few more quick-witted individuals had realized something major had happened. The bright light was the Qi expansion of the crystal sword; the high-tech crystal sword combined with qi was something only seven-leaf warriors could do!
A few experienced veterans stared at each other. Who was this Yang Jiu? It was rumored that he couldn't cultivate any qi, so he hadn't been picked for the academy. Why was he acting so different now?
Before they could make sense of everything, Jiu, with a leisurely expression, had turned around to leave. The crowd parted lightning fast, giving him a three-meter-wide path.
As they watched him walk out of the corridor, this regular warrior who had committed a major offense, leapt up, bounded on a few boulders, and took off for the distance.
He moved so efficiently that before anyone could react, he was already out of sight.
Everything that had transpired at the military supply tent was quickly reported to the office of Lin Lanxin, the commander of the frontrunner troops.
She was in the middle of talking with her generals about the next steps of the war; upon hearing the news, her shock was no less dramatic than that of those who'd witnessed the incident themselves.
The only thing different was that the almost 1,000 three-leaf warriors at the scene were also shocked by Jiu's stunning power, and Lanxin was more shocked at how she, and the officials from the mystic academy, had misjudged Jiu's talent.
She put down her commander's stick and frowned; after a pause, she waved off the messenger soldier.
"To use qi with the crystal sword, but not damaging the sword . . ." she mumbled. A shadow of hesitation appeared on Lanxin's beautiful face. "Has this Yang Jiu really reached seven-leaf warrior level already?"
"Second Sister, want me to bring him back?" The baby-faced Lanxiong stood up. "He had qi, but played stupid when they picked students for the academy? He must have been plotting something."
He pursed his lips, his eyes full of challenge. "If he dared to kill a superior in the army, then we have the duty to capture him and restore justice."
Hearing Lanxiong, Lanxin couldn't help but think of Jiu's quiet and calm face. She remembered when she recommended him to go the mystic academy, the officials auditioning the candidates found he couldn't do qi. His face looked as still as a sculpture back then.
Who was this man? If he really had some secret plan for the kingdom, why was he fighting so spectacularly on the battlefield but refusing promotions? He even hid his level of cultivation. Was it just to avoid going to the mystic academy? What exactly was he hiding?
"Sister?" Her brothers' calls pulled her back to the present.
She rubbed her temple and picked up the commander's stick again. "Don't tell the army headquarters yet. Tell our father so we can use all of our family resources to locate him," she ordered.
After a moment, she sighed. "If I'm not mistaken, getting him . . . may be how our family could get to the next level."
The brothers looked at Lanxin in confusion. Why was this nefarious and bold criminal, who dared to kill an army superior, being so valued by their elder sister? After all, she was known as their family's brain trust.
"Why would you . . .?" Lanxiong couldn't help but start to ask after a silence.
Lanxin smiled; she rustled his choppy purple locks. "With all the restrictions in the heavenly realm, there was only so much mystics could do in battles."
She explained patiently to her sixteen-year-old seventh brother, who was already so strong their father allowed him to partic.i.p.ate in war and gain experience. "Even our great-grandfather, as powerful a mystic as he was, could only remove obstacles for us when Luosheng Kingdom sent mystics."
Lanxiong nodded. "I know; great-grandfather helped us. The attacks we sustain during the heavenly trial will only be more intense . . ."
Lanxin sighed. "So, a mystic who would attack civilians or warriors without reservations would be very useful to our family."
Lanxiong squinted. "I won't let you down."
Seeing the glint in her brother's eyes, Lanxin looked touched; she patted his head. "I know, you'll definitely break through nine-leaf warrior status and become a Yuan Ying mystic."
After a pause, she continued. "But we in the Lin Lan family, we can't be those mystics who cannot ascend to heaven. Only battle-type mystics from the academy are the real source of strength in our family."
Lanxiong nodded proudly, but he couldn't help adding, "Sister, why do you think that Jiu could pa.s.s through the mystic academy, even though 99.99 percent of people flunk out? Why are you so sure he would become a battle-type Yuan Ying mystic?"
As Jiu's resolute face appeared in her mind again, along with his deep and bottomless gaze, Lanxin seemed lost in thought. "It's . . . just a feeling."
