Promise.

‘You moved on fast,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘What nonsense are you saying?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked.

‘Did you reject me to be with Shen Cheng?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘What?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked. ‘Who wants to be with Shen Cheng?’

‘Am I wrong?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked. ‘Do you think I’ll let Xiao Bao call another man father?’

‘You promised to let me go and let me take Xiao Bao back to the Qiao Household,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘Yes, but I only agreed for you to take Xiao Bao back to the Qiao Household,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘You promised!’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘Do you think you can stand here if I didn’t keep my promise?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

Qiao Tan Yuan knew Gu Jiao Wu spoke the truth, he would have kept her on the island if he didn’t agree to let her return home.

‘You broke your promise,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘You can say what you like,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

Gu Jiao Wu grabbed Qiao Tan Yuan’s car key, and sat in the driver’s seat.

‘Gu Jiao Wu, this is my car,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘Get in,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘You get out,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘I need to go home to be with Xiao Bao.’

‘I’ll drive you home,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘I don’t need you to drive me home,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘I can drive myself home.’

‘Either I drive you home or you can stay here all day,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

Qiao Tan Yuan surrendered as Gu Jiao Wu expected, she sat in the car.

‘Home?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

Gu Jiao Wu glanced at Qiao Tan Yuan’s pursed lips and he smiled. He turned on the car, and drove to the Qiao Mansion.

‘Your car needs a tune up,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘When was the last time you had it checked?’

Mr and Mrs Qiao bought the red car for Qiao Tan Yuan’s birthday. Qiao Tan Yuan like most women, drove cars and didn’t pay attention to the condition of a car’s engine. She knew Gu Jiao Wu was worried about her safety, but she wasn’t grateful.

‘I don’t need you to worry about my car,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

Gu Jiao Wu didn’t want to fight with Qiao Tan Yuan, he focused on arriving at the Qiao Mansion safely.

After Gu Jiao Wu parked the car, Qiao Tan Yuan put out her hand.

‘Give me back my car key,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

Gu Jiao Wu didn’t give back the key. He followed Qiao Tan Yuan into the Qiao Mansion.

Mrs Qiao was surprised to see Gu Jiao Wu. Didn’t Qiao Tan Yuan say there was nothing between Qiao Tan Yuan and Gu Jiao Wu?

Gu Jiao Wu greeted Mrs Qiao, and he chased after Qiao Tan Yuan.

Mrs Qiao watched Gu Jiao Wu entered the nursery, and she understood, Qiao Tan Yuan’s way of thinking was too simple. Gu Jiao Wu wouldn’t be Gu Jiao Wu if he let go of Qiao Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao that easily. She was going to let them decide their own fate.

In the nursery, Qiao Tan Yuan ignored Gu Jiao Wu. She fed Xiao Bao a bowl of baby food puree, played with Xiao Bao until Xiao Bao fell asleep. Then she asked Mrs Chu to watch over Xiao Bao, and she walked to her bedroom. She was about to lock her bedroom door, but Gu Jiao Wu was quicker. He entered her bedroom, and he closed the door.

‘Gu Jiao Wu, I want you to leave,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

Gu Jiao Wu saw the look of weariness in Qiao Tan Yuan’s eyes.

‘Are you scared of me?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘Who’s scared of you?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked. ‘I just don’t want to see you.’

‘Who do want to see?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked. ‘Shen Cheng?’

Gu Jiao Wu was jealous Qiao Tan Yuan spent half the day with Shen Cheng, but she didn’t want to see him.

‘So what if I want to see Shen Cheng?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked. ‘I don’t need your permission, and I don’t need to report to you about my life.’

Gu Jiao Wu looked closely at Qiao Tan Yuan’s face, and her outfit. When they were on the island Qiao Tan Yuan didn’t wear makeup or dressed up for him. But she wore makeup, and dressed up to see Shen Cheng.

‘How do you think Shen Cheng will feel if he knew you wore clothes I bought you to go see him?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

Qiao Tan Yuan looked at the white coat Gu Jiao Wu bought her, and felt embarra.s.sed. She took off the white coat, and threw it at him.

‘Take it,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘Who needs to wear your clothes?’

Qiao Tan Yuan wouldn’t have accepted clothes from Gu Jiao Wu if he didn’t send her suitcase to her home, and she had nothing to wear at the Gu Mansion except night clothes.

Gu Jiao Wu caught the white coat, and stood in front of Qiao Tan Yuan who was glaring at him.

‘Are you looking at me because you’re waiting for me to take off the rest of your clothes?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘Who’s waiting for you to take off my clothes?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked. ‘It’s not what you’re thinking. I only returned your coat.’

‘What am I thinking?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘What else can you be thinking except wanting to make a commotion in my bedroom?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked.

‘Commotion?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

Gu Jiao Wu tossed the coat on the floor. Then he held Qiao Tan Yuan’s waist, and kissed her lips like he wanted to the moment he saw her at the hospital. When his hand slid into her pants, she bit his tongue hard and he let go of her lips.

‘Qiao Tan Yuan, you can’t be with Chen Sheng,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘Gu Jiao Wu, you promised to let me go,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘I only promised to let you go home,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘I didn’t promise to let you go.’

‘You promised you wouldn’t interfere in my life anymore,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘Do you think I would ever let you go so you can be with another man?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.
