Saya's eyes burned with tears as she ran away. Haru stun by her words could only watch as she fled. Saya's words cut through him like a sharp knife piercing his heart. Words couldn't begin to describe his despair when he heard her say she regretted falling in love with him. He was so lost in his sorrows that he almost forgot the words she spoke beforehand. Almost.
Saya made her way into the hallway, her sobbing getting louder. She was never one to cry prettily. She wasn't like the other rich ladies in her school who have been taught at a young age that image was everything, even while crying. A proper young lady should still look frail and elegant while crying. But Saya wasn't like that. In blunt terms, she was an ugly crier. Unlike Haru who always seemed to be in control of his emotions, Saya was quite different. She was an open book, often controlled by her emotions. It was her flaw. But she accepted this a long time ago. Her body began to shake with emotions and her breathing quicken. She was stupid to think that she would have been fine meeting Haru again after two years. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid!', she thought bitterly.
"Ow!"
"Oh no, I'm so sorry! Are you okay?," Saya apologized catching the old man she b.u.mped into by the arm. Saya steadied herself and the old man. She used the end of her sleeve to wipe her face clean of tears. She was embarra.s.sed to be caught in this state.
"Oh I'm fine young lady. I should be asking you that. Are you okay? What's with all the tears? Ah did you have a fight with your boyfriend? Ai yai yai, young people these days. Just make up okay, it's not good to fight and hold grudges. I'm sure everything's gonna be fine. Why don't you go and freshen up. There's a washroom up ahead to your left."
Boyfriend? What boyfriend? Saya didn't know what to reply to the old man. The old man was wearing a janitor's uniform and he looked kind but she wasn't going to explain her tragic love story to a stranger. So Saya nodded her head in agreement to his suggestion to freshen up. The old man watched her walk into the washroom before walking away.
He didn't make it far before he was stopped again.
"Old man Tenzin, I see your still playing as the help," said Haru nonchalantly. Growing up the old man was like a second grandfather to him so he was used to his quirky ways. He step to the side impatiently trying to walk ahead.
"Is the young master looking for Saya," he said with a smirk, stopping Haru on his tracks.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk, young master is so cruel to make a girl cry like that. But it's quite unexpected to see such a pretty girl look so ugly as she cried. It really open this old man's eyes. What'd you do to make her cry so much? Tsk, tsk, young master flowers should be admired and handled with care. They are so beautiful, yet so delicate that they could wilt at the slightest of actions."
Haru ignored his chiding and asked, "Where's Saya?"
"Ahh well, I told her to freshen up in the washroom up ahead."
Haru made haste, almost knocking old man Tenzin over.
"Hey wait! Haru that's the ladies washroom!," he yelled at Haru's back. 'Tsk, kids now days. Tsk, tsk.'
Haru ignored his warning and entered the washroom. He was still processing Saya's words when she left him in the cla.s.sroom. When his troubled mind finally absorb all that she told him, he became confuse. He had more questions now. Why did she say he didn't love her? How dare she even say that? It made him furious that she doubted his love. In all the time they spent together, could she really believe that those feelings of his weren't real? It enraged him thinking that she didn't believe in him but more importantly he was curious as to why she believe she was a replacement?
He found her over the sink, splashing water onto her face. He could see her swollen eyes and hear her hiccups. Although he was confuse over what Saya told him, Haru still felt pain seeing the woman he love weeping. Before Saya realized what was going on, Haru grab her wrist and pulled her into a tight embrace. Saya struggled but it was futile. The arms around her were immobile.
"Saya, explain," he murmured into her hair.
Saya remained silent unsure of what he meant. Explain what exactly? He should know best the meaning of her words to him back in the cla.s.sroom. What game was he trying to play with her again? Saya felt tired. She gone through a roller coaster of emotions. She didn't even have the strength to fight out of Haru's embrace. She made her body motionless, her arms limp against her hips. She refused to hug him back. She was neither trying to get out of his hold or leaning into it. She was flaccid like a slowly deflating balloon.
"Please Saya tell me what's wrong? What did you mean by replacement? You are n.o.body's replacement. What happen two years ago that made you leave? When you left me, I searched for you endlessly. You broke my heart into a million little pieces. But you know what? Those pieces still belong only to you," Haru said to Saya. He spoke the words softly but they were filled with conviction. He loosen his grip and stared into her eyes.
Saya's heart was telling her to believe him but her mind refused to concede to his flowery words. There was just too much evidence. And she was hurt too much. Haru saw Saya's inner struggling whether to believe him or not. He look deep into her captivating eyes and was pained to see so much hurt reflected. It was at that moment he realized it was he that had to concede. Even though it was he who was hurt deeply by her sudden disappearance, he must have trust in her and believe that something awful happened to make her doubt him and leave him. The hurt hasn't subsided but Haru knew no matter how many times Saya broke his heart he'll end up running back to her no matter what. For now he won't push her for answers. Instead he'll prove to her how deep and real his love is.
"It's okay Saya. You don't have to tell me anything right now. I'm just happy that your back. Let's wipe the slate clean and start over. Let me prove my love for you. "
Haru always felt that someone behind the scenes was the cause of Saya's disappearance. He'd suspected his grandfather which caused them to be estranged from one another. Haru had no solid proof but trusted his intuition. He'll give in this time and let the matter go for now. But he wasn't letting her go, not ever again.
