His words tumbled out such that open later recollection, he was sure he had said nothing good on the car ride. He only remembered Dr Wu's hand on his shoulder--gentle and sure. Wu opened the car door a bit and the driver jolted the car to a stop in the midst of New York traffic.
Nolan sat up and looked outside with a daze. They were in front of a karaoke bar which was around the corner from New York University. He rubbed his eyes. "This is the wrong place."
But Wu dragged him out of the car and shut the door. She made a little waving motion to the driver who had put up his arms in frustration. He opened his mouth to argue but Wu put a rolled up bill into his hand and he just tipped his hat and drove off.
Wu turned to him. "This is exactly the right place. I want to get some company while I eat before I go back to the hospital. I don't want your roommates to deal with a drunk Nolan. We'll turn you sober and I'll go to sleep without a worry."
Her eyes danced with mischief as she was wrapped around him. Nolan looked at her strangely. "I have to run some lab tests. And no. I'm not that drunk. I'm just you know a little dizzy. I can manage without sober food."
Wu shrugged. "It doesn't matter what you want. I'm hungry. I need to sober up before I get to the hospital. I don't want to eat by myself. I want some good food and company. Will you help me do that, Nolan? Free food and a beautiful lady you might like?"
Nolan considered this. It didn't sound so bad after all. He didn't have to say no. His stomach grumbled loudly and Wu continue to drag him. He opened the door for her and the night got interesting.
The bar was neon lit with hues of pink and blue casting interesting shadows around the place. The vibe was very eclectic with weeaboos and weirdos alike. French maids with cat ears and tails dancing about with little serving trays on their heads as old korean businessman belted out the latest girl group bops and compared the stats of their favorite idols. The steaming bowls of pork and chicken dishes wafted through the room such that Nolan licked his lips unconsciously. A lady with a pair of light up ears greeted Wu excitedly as she seated them. They spoke to each other in a Chinese dialect that Nolan knew wasn't Mandarin. Cantonese maybe?
The server was smart to set them in their own room away from the booming sounds that dominated
the main area. The place was surprisingly already set as the server explained a large group had recently just cancelled and she didn't want the food to go to waste. Nolan had only nodded before downing everything within his reach. Everything was excellently made -- the fried chicken, soondae, duboki, spicy rice cakes with large amounts of pa jun.
