Although this has become something of a normal event, today I’m eating dinner with Kaori’s family.
Shinji, who is Kaori’s dad, is still at work, so it’s just Kaori, Shiori and I at the table.
“Thank you for the food.” (Kei)
Shiori’s cooking looks delicious, as always, but for me, today it’s a little different from normal.
I had thought I just wasn’t all that hungry, but I didn't seem to have much of an appet.i.te.
My stomach has been hurting for a while now. I wish I knew what is going on with me.
“It’s delicious!” (Kaori)
Kaori seems to be in a good mood while eating. I’m also eating while trying to act as normal as possible.
“Speaking of which, is Shinji still at work?” (Kei)
I asked Shiori after I had swallowed a bite that didn’t seem to have much taste to me, but it isn’t because it’s not delicious.
“Yes, he is. He’s been busy lately, but it seems he won’t have to work this weekend.” (Shiori)
I never found out what Shinji does, but you just can’t tell if he will be home early or late. Today seems to be one of the late days.
Although, sometimes he would say that there had been a ‘specification or delivery date change’, not that I understand what he means.
Today might well be one of those days for him.
“There are times when I have gone to bed and dad hasn’t come home yet.” (Kaori)
Kaori said as she moved more food from the serving platter to her plate, while I have barely touched the food on my plate.
“Kei, aren't you hungry today?” (Shiori)
Shiori asked with a concerned expression when she noticed that I wasn’t eating like I normally do.
Is it that obvious that I’m not eating much?
“Maybe?” (Kei)
I mean, my stomach hurts quite a bit and I have no appet.i.te at all. I might have caught a cold.
[Heh] “Well, don’t force yourself to eat too much.” (Shiori)
Shiori laughs and jokes about it. Thankfully, she didn’t seem to suspect I feel bad.
You don’t have to be worried about it. I will just eat what I can and go to bed. Fortunately, today is Friday, so if I rest this weekend I should be fine.
“Okay, thanks.” (Kei)
“Are you alright?” (Kaori)
Kaori, who knows I haven’t been eating, quietly asked with a concerned expression, but I don’t think it’s something to be all that worried about.
“I’m fine Kaori.” (Kei)
Although I said that, Kaori knows me too well. Just saying I’m alright won’t help. I suppose the only thing I can do is take a lot of meat from the serving platter and eat.
“Ah! I haven’t eaten enough.” (Kei)
Shiori and Kaori also take more from the platter; of course, they take far more than I do.
“No need to hurry, there is plenty of food left.” (Shiori)
Shiori said with a wry smile, but honestly, I didn’t want any more to begin with.
As you can imagine, I ended up not getting the chance to eat any of what I took, because…
I drop my chopsticks and cover my stomach with both hands.
“Hey, are you really okay?” (Kaori)
Kaori asks me anxiously after she swallows the meat she had been chewing.
The moment I heard Kaori talking to me, I try to loosen my eyebrows I had unconsciously knitted together. Hopefully, she didn’t notice my expression.
“You don’t look as if you feel well, are you really okay?” (Shiori)
Shiori asks me, sounding worried. Well, it’s not like I can do anything about it. At this point, it’s useless to keep trying to act normal around these two.
“Umm... I’m not really hungry.” (Kei)
“Oh? Alright. Well, don’t try to force yourself.” (Shiori)
“I might have a cold.” (Kei)
I try to play it off as if it isn’t such a big deal, so Kaori and Shiori didn’t worry too much.
I’m just tired, my stomach hurts and my back is sore as well.
Truthfully, I do feel worse than I did earlier, but I don’t seem to have a fever as yet.
“What do you think? It’s not that bad, so I think I’ll be okay.” (Kei)
“If you take it lightly, you might get worse. Go to bed early today.” (Shiori)
“Oh, right.” (Kei)
Admonished by Shiori, all I can do is obediently agree. Golden Week is coming up soon and I don’t want to be stuck inside sick then.
“Don't give me your cold.” (Kaori)
“Alright, I'll definitely give it to you!” (Kei)
“I don’t want to catch your cold!” (Kaori)
Kaori is joking around, but her tone of voice and expression tell me that she is actually worried.
Trying not to be outdone, I argue with Kaori, but truthfully, it takes more energy than I have to do so.
“You’ll be fine.” (Shiori)
Shiori seemed to be amazed that Kaori and I bicker with each other even though I feel so bad. Then her expression changes, as if she just came up with a great idea.
“Kaori, if you really want to catch a cold, you can just kiss her.” (Shiori)
“What!?” (Kaori)
Kaori immediately freezes and stares shocked at Shiori. Well, I’m sure that is one way for someone to catch a cold.
I glance at Kaori without turning my head. I swear I could almost hear a squeak as she slowly turned her head to face me.
I think it goes without saying, but at that moment, she’s blushing furiously.
“…what?! Why?! You… I… ki… ki… kiss!!!” (Kaori)
Kaori aren’t you a little too fl.u.s.tered? She’s not really trying to make us kiss.
“What are you talking about?” (Shiori)
Shiori honestly seemed to be surprised at how fl.u.s.tered Kaori was. However, a moment later, suspicion crept into her expression.
“Eh? Uh… it’s not like that!” (Kaori)
It’s not like what? I have no idea what she means or why she is so fl.u.s.tered.
“Well, it’s fine, but…” (Kei)
“Right. It’s best not to worry about it.” (Kaori)
I say as I shrug my shoulders, while Kaori twists herself back and forth in her seat embarra.s.sed, yet smiling shyly.
“Oh yes, Kei.” (Shiori)
“Yes?” (Kei)
I turned to look at Shiori when she spoke to me. What she said next was something I never expected to hear in my whole life.
“If it’s not a cold, then you have menstrual cramps. You should keep your stomach warm.” (Shiori)
