d.a.m.n it!! Why the h.e.l.l do people have to be so f.u.c.king fast!? Why!? Why couldn't they all just be a bunch of lazy couch potatoes so I can actually catch up! Just an hour ago I managed to finally get within sight of the runaway adventurers. But like the dumba.s.s I am, I was being noisy while swinging and that blond girl heard me and started running. And naturally, the others started running too! I swear for how high my intelligence stat is I don't make very wise decisions…
Maybe it doesn't affect how wise I am. That's probably it. But still, its strange thing is that the rest of them didn't even show any signs of hearing me when the blondie did. That doesn't matter. Right now, I was stuck chasing after the adventurers who were despite all their equipment remarkably fast!
Humans probably have a very low toughness stat and comparatively higher strength and agility stat. Which was both good and bad or me. The good is that it isn't that hard to inflict lethal damage upon them. The bad is that even now as I speak, they're furthering the distance between us! In just the last minute alone the gap went from 20 feet to 30 feet! (That's 6 meters to 9 meters for our non-American readers!)
The only reason that they haven't gotten further is that my own agility isn't exactly low and the speed from swinging for such a long time built up my speed to a level I couldn't achieve if I had been using my own strength alone. Even now my tendrils were beginning to tire showing that yet another stat of mine was inferior to the humans. Except for the blondie. She seems to be tiring a bit but she's still managing to keep up with the others.
At this rate, they'd getaway! I need to think of something quickly before the distance becomes too large to cover. I got it! The Joe slingshot! Perfect for crossing distances in a short amount of time. It'll put extra strain on some of my already fatigued vines that I've been using but it'll get the job done. Probably.
Using two of my vines I grabbed a st.u.r.dy branch in front of me and another two behind me. Once secured I pulled myself backward building up the potential energy in my front vines and aimed myself ahead of the adventurers to consider their own speed. Once my vines were pulled to their limit, I let my grip on the branches behind me and the potential energy in my vines slung me forward. At the very last moment, I let go of the branches which were previously in front of me and flew above the ground towards the adventurers.
My body produced a faint whistling noise and the blonde girl turned around just in time to see me slam into the back of one of the adventurers who were lagging, knocking them down with a loud oof. Thankfully by using my iron leaves and my vines wrapping around my body, I managed to avoid taking more than a few points of damage from the impact.
Taking advantage of the hunter's dazed state I drove several of my thorn-tipped vines into the back of the man's neck piercing his spinal cord instantly killing him.
[Human warrior slain. 7.5 XP gained. 3 skill points earned. 3 mutation points earned.]
I paid the notification no heed as I dashed forward towards the blonde girl with my bloodied vines reaching out to wrap around her legs. Before I could, however, one of her comrades stepped in front of me with a shield in hand and blocked my vines. At the same time, another member stepped forward and slashed the vines I lashed out within half causing pain to flare up where they were cut. But that wasn't the end of their counterattack. In the short time that the two others confronted me, the blonde adventurer went around her comrades and swung her sword towards the base of my stem. The tip of the sword emitted a whistling sound as it sped towards me.
I dimly realized that it was too fast. I wouldn't be able to dodge it. The world around me seemed to slow to a crawl. Almost like everything was given a debuff on their speed that they became as fast as mola.s.ses. Myself included. Was this the zone that sports athletes talked about? It doesn't matter. I need to figure out how to survive this, and since it seems only my view on the world sped up and not my actual speed the sword was still outpacing me.
All the other humans didn't have nearly as much speed in their attacks as this girl did. And it was only a few seconds ago that she was being defended against my attack before she was attacking me back. She must be the leader and a high level. I'll need to keep an eye on her. But my best chance of defense would be to wrap myself in my vines then cover myself further with my iron leaves.
That way the vines could provide a cushion against blunt force damage and the iron leaves could deal with the sword itself. The odds of success aren't high, but it was the best option. I could probably alternate between vines then leaves to further strengthen the defense. All this thinking took place in the span of a fraction of a second as all my vines and leaves leaped into action piling up around the area the sword was going to land at. And land it did when I was halfway through my layered defenses.
The sword cleaved through several layers of my vines and crushed several more of my iron leaves effortlessly before my defenses finally succeeded in stopping it from getting any further. Just as the blade was on the cusp of reaching my stem. But even then, the power of the blow sent my body flying into the underbrush where I crashed through several various bushes before they slowed my speed enough that my impact onto the ground wasn't immediately lethal.
Even so, I was paralyzed with pain. Rather than a sword, it felt like I was run over by a truck! What's up with that absurd attack power that girl had!? She was scrawnier than her other two buddies who attacked me, yet she was easily several times faster and stronger! I couldn't just lay around here moaning about the pain I'm in. It's the bison incident all over again. If I don't get out of here quickly then they might just decide to come after me while I'm weak.
I reached out with my roots and vines and started dragging myself deeper into the forest away from the adventurers. My stem felt like it was about to fall apart, and I wasn't too confident in whether I'd be able to stand up normally. As much as I hate it, I'll have to drag myself. While disgraceful it beats getting turned into plant mulch by that monster of a swordsman.
I dragged myself up into a nearby tree to get a view on the adventurers. And I was pleasantly surprised to see that they weren't coming after me! Instead, they were hurriedly looting their dead comrade's body before rushing off to escape. Talk about loyalty issues. But that's good for me. It means that my life isn't in danger of being snuffed out by that. I should heal up. First, though let's look at the extent of the damage dealt to my HP!
[HP: 1/40]
…. That girl is a f.u.c.king monster.
