The sound of the bell ringing as the door opened drew my attention away from the magazine I was reading. Looking up I saw a couple teenagers wearing thick coats and wearing beanies entering the gas station.
Not sure why they chose to wear such thick coats today. It was the middle of June in Houston for crying out loud! They were just begging the sun to cook them alive wearing those things but as the old saying goes to each their own. Even if it was crazy.
"Hey dumba.s.s. Eyes up here." A deep voice growled out drawing his attention to the teen who was addressing.
I froze in fear upon seeing the pistol in the man's hand. Once he saw my expression, he tossed a backpack onto the counter and gestured towards the cash register.
"Empty out the cash register and put the money in the bag or I'll blow your G.o.dd.a.m.n brains out." He ordered me.
I dumbly nodded and obediently open the cash register and start stuffing the money inside into the bag. Glancing back up I saw the guy's friend holding his own pistol while watching the outside of the gas station while nervously fiddling with the gun in his hand. The one who was currently had his gun trained on me looked over to where I was looking at and frowned.
"Stop looking at him and focus on the money. Now!" He reprimanded tightening his grip on the pistol.
"Hey just calm down man. Here just take the money and leave me alone please!" I quavered. Judge me all you want but I'd like to see you act brave when there was a gun shoved into your face. Before the robber could say anything back to him the sound of sirens pierced the air.
Hearing this the man at watching the door shot a worried glance over at his partner.
"s.h.i.t man that's the cops!" he sputtered.
"d.a.m.n it you called the cops didn't you!?" The one holding the gun accused me while waving the gun threateningly with a crazed look in his eyes.
"No! I swear I didn't!"
"Don't you lie to me! It had to be you! I know it!" The robber raged. His eyes bloodshot eyes were now darting around nervously with his face being a volatile mixture of confusion rage and fear.
"f.u.c.k man we have to get out of here! The cops will be here any minute!" The other one yelled.
"f.u.c.k!" Shouted the one holding the gun on me before pulling the trigger.
A pop sounded out as my chest suddenly got numb and cold. Looking down at my chest I saw blood blooming outwards on my shirt like a flower. Four more pops soon followed, and more small blood flowers began growing from a chest. My knees grew weak as I staggered backwards before collapsing on my back gasping for breath.
"Why the h.e.l.l did you shoot him!? We are so screwed now! We're going to go to prison! I'll get stuck in a prison cell with some murderer and get hara.s.sed every day! Oh f.u.c.k. f.u.c.k!" One of the robbers rambled.
"Just shut up! We have the money lets just get out of here!" The other yelled back. Shortly after the bell on the door dinged as the two left the gas station.
Was this how I was going to die? Killed in a gas station robbery. I haven't even graduated high school yet. Breathing started to get harder as it felt like my lungs were filling up with water and the edges of my vision were beginning to blur.
"Someone call a paramedic! We have injured over here!" A feminine voice commanded. Then a blurred face loomed over me. With how blurry my vision was I could barely make out any distinguishing features other than the fact that the person had tanned skin and black hair.
"Don't worry buddy everything will be alright now. Just don't give up on me ok?" She consoled. But it was too late. Already my vision was growing dark before my consciousness faded into the abyss.
