Hetrieda"push"atGillings'smindtodiscoverthecovertreasonsandfoundthemanhadatightnaturalshield,notuncommonforapersoninhighposition,privytosensitivefacts.TheburlyCommissionergaveeveryoutwardappearanceofbeingcompletelyatease,asifthiswerenomorethanaroutinevisit,andnotonehintofhissurfacethoughtsleaked.Deepseteyes,barelyvisibleunderheavybrows,abovefleshycheeksinaswarthyfacethatmissednothing,flickedfromDaffydtoLesterandback.
