She entered the apartment slowly, confident that her two friends are already there, and she didn't want to wake them up. Liz and Bri left the club shortly after midnight, so they should be home. Sleeping.
Mia tripped on a pillow which was laying in the middle of the living room. She remembered that it was there when they headed out for the night. Why is that still there? Did Liz and Bri ignore it when they got in?
Mia was too tired to think much about it. She flung the pillow toward the sofa and went to her room to shower, change and crash for the night. Mia remembered that Liz told them how they have tomorrow's lunch and afternoon planned with someone from her work, so she should get her beauty sleep on.
…
It was close to 3 AM when Bri returned to Liz's apartment building. Quentin dropped her off with his car.
Bri had a nice time with Quentin. He is so easy to tease, and she laughed most of the evening.
When they left the Black Rose nightclub, he offered her a meal, but… it was after midnight. What is open? The two of them ended up in a 24h McDonald's.
Bri asked Quentin to tell her about his life over two big macs and large French fries and he was happy to tell her how his family has a publishing company, focusing on fashion trends and his job is to reach out to different brands in order to get them to collaborate with magazines they are publishing.
"Do you like it?", Bri asked.
"Yeah.", Quentin responded. "It works. I travel a lot, and get to meet with a lot of models…" He paused and cleared his throat. "I wanted to say that I have a flexible schedule."
Bri shrugged. "There is no need to explain. I already cla.s.sified you as a playboy who might be good for one evening of fun and that's it."
Quentin felt that each of Bri's words pierced his heart and left an open wound. His fiery G.o.ddess sees him as no more than one evening of fun?
"What's with the face?" Bri noticed that he seems to be in agony (again). "Don't tell me that my observation hurt your feelings?"
"To be honest… it did."
"Pft!", some of the soda sprayed out of Bri's mouth on him. "Sorry, sorry…", she said through giggles while patting his shirt with a napkin to wipe off the soda (unsuccessfully). That is going to leave a stain.
"If you don't want to be cla.s.sified as a playboy, you should not act like one. Remember what I said in the club about enjoying without care and then your past comes to bite you?"
"What can I do to change your mind about me?"
Bri lifted her eyebrows. "I already made my mind. And I am a very stubborn woman. Or are you trying to tell me that I'm wrong?"
Quentin nodded solemnly. He can't tell her that she is wrong, because she is not. "In your opinion, we can have one night of fun and that's it?"
Bri tilted her head while thinking for a second. "No. I said that you MIGHT be good for one evening of fun. The key word is MIGHT… Listen, I am confident that there are many girls who will be delighted to hookup with you…"
"But not you." Quentin finished her sentence.
Bri nodded in confirmation. "I think that you are funny, smart and I like talking to you. But for a hookup…? You are a six. That is not enough for more than friends."
Bri saw that Quentin's face fell.
"Did I hurt your feelings again? You are very touchy, aren't you?"
"I am not used to having a date with a woman who is bashing me nonstop.", Quentin admitted.
Bri looked around and lifted her index finger to get his attention. Her temper was rising with every next word: "A date? In McDonald's? Is your mind at the level of a high schooler?"
Bri's scorching gaze made Quentin uncomfortable, but he didn't want to say anything, because she will call him touchy again.
"And another thing…", Bri continued with a serious expression. "I'm not bashing you, I'm telling the truth. There is a difference."
She wiped her mouth with a napkin, reached for her purse and threw $50 on the table while getting up. "Goodnight, Quentin."
He glanced at the money and wondered why did she put it there? It's too much for a tip, and he paid for the food already. Is she paying him?
Quentin saw that Bri is leaving and he grabbed her hand in panic. "Where are you going?"
"Home.", she responded and pried her hand out of his. "You are obviously not enjoying my company, and I find that the mood is sour as well. So, I will go before this escalates."
He scrambled up and walked after Bri. "What makes you think that I don't enjoy your company?"
Bri rolled her eyes. "Quentin, let's not play games. I like honesty. And I can see that you would rather enjoy with one of those bunnies from the dancefloor in the nightclub who will giggle and agree no matter what you say. Just admit it: I am too much for you."
Quentin rubbed his chin vigorously. He does that when he does not know how to handle the situation.
"What if you are exactly what I need?"
Bri stifled a laugh. "I am not a therapy. I came to Seattle to have fun, not to make a man out of you."
Bri looked at the street and saw few cabs parked by the curb. She was about to head toward them, when she felt Quentin hold her hand again. She looked at him in disbelief.
"Bri…", Quentin swallowed hard. "I find you to be attractive beyond belief. Your honesty and sharpness are not something I'm used to, but you bewitched me the moment I laid my eyes on you and… I can take it. Don't leave, please. Give me a chance."
Bri smirked and pointed toward the piers. "I want to walk there. You can join me."
Quentin's face lit up. He looked like a puppy who got a promise of a treat.
Back to present…
They are in the hallway of Liz's (and Max's) apartment building. Joshua's eyes are just above level of the reception desk while he tries to be invisible and not to miss anything at the same time.
"Goodnight, Quentin.", Bri said with a smile after they exchanged phone numbers.
"Bri…", Quentin licked his lips nervously. "I had a good time."
Bri's smile widened. "Me too."
"When can I see you again?"
Bri shrugged. "I'm not sure. We have plans for tomorrow afternoon, and I don't know if Liz planned anything for the evening, or for Sunday. Text me when you are free, and we can see if it works for both."
Quentin's eyes shifted while he processed what Bri said. "You will be at Liz's place in the morning?"
Bri confirmed. "Olivia is coming at nine, and we plan to bond over breakfast."
Bri's eyebrows shoot up at the sight of Quentin leaning closer to her. Is he going for a goodnight kiss? Yup, he is!
Quentin closed his eyes when he was two inches away from Bri and he paused when he felt something flat (and warm) against his lips. He was surprised that he is kissing the back of Bri's palm.
"You are a six. Don't forget that.", Bri told him while trying to keep a straight face and not dissolve into giggles at his outrage mixed with dejection. She can see that he is not used to rejection.
Quentin sighed and adjusted his emotions. "Is there any way for me to leave the six zone?"
Bri understood that he wants a kiss. She does not think that kisses are a big deal, especially when two grownup, available people are attracted to each other, but… she loves to tease him.
"What do you mean by leaving the six zone?"
Quentin forced a smile, realizing that Bri is enjoying this. "I want a re-do. Because I am much more than a six."
Bri pursed her lips while pretending to think. "For a re-do… you will need to show you sincerity."
She patted his cheek lightly and winked. "Goodnight, Quentin."

Quentin looked after Bri sadly and saw her wave before entering the elevator.
He felt an immense pain in his chest, and he was confident that it is because Bri left and took his heart with her.
