“Let’s go too!” Lin Chao had no intention of sitting down and gestured towards the door.
“Where are we going?” Xia Wan asked without moving.
“You said last time you would help, I’m taking you to meet someone,” Lin Chao said, suddenly remembering something. “You’re not planning to back out, are you?”
Seeing Lin Chao’s expression suddenly become anxious, Xia Wan shook her head. “No, I won’t!”
Lin Chao then relaxed. “Let’s go! The car is already waiting outside!” Xia Wan did not refuse and followed Lin Chao out of the hospital.
Three black sedans were parked at the entrance of the hospital.
Lin Chao led Xia Wan to one of them, and then the three cars set off for the military district guesthouse outside the county town.
Arriving at the guesthouse, the three cars stopped one after the other.
Lin Chao opened the car door for Xia Wan and led her out.
The people in the other two cars did not move.
Xia Wan was puzzled but did not ask any questions.
Lin Chao didn’t say much, leading Xia Wan directly to a three-story detached building behind the guesthouse.
At the entrance of the building, there stood a soldier on each side, fully equipped.
Lin Chao handed over his ID to one of the soldiers, and they were allowed to pa.s.s.
Once inside the building, Lin Chao slowed down and curiously looked at Xia Wan. “Aren’t you going to ask me anything?”
“Would you tell me if I asked?” Xia Wan replied without hesitation.
Lin Chao was taken aback, then laughed. “Not before we enter here, definitely not!”
Xia Wan immediately showed an “I knew it” expression.
Lin Chao continued. “However, I still need to explain a bit to you.”
“The person I’m taking you to meet today has a special status, and I can’t tell you his exact ident.i.ty,” Lin Chao paused, then continued, “But, the cooperation matter I mentioned to you needs his approval.”
“So, he’s your direct superior?” Xia Wan said, not at all surprised.
“Yes, you could say that!” Lin Chao nodded, “So, if you have any requests, you can mention them to him.”
Lin Chao thought for a moment, then added. “My authority is limited, but I sincerely hope you can help us, that’s why I brought you to meet him.”
Xia Wan shrugged. “Alright! I will talk to him personally if there’s anything.”
Lin Chao didn’t say anything further and quickly led Xia Wan to the innermost room on the second floor.
A soldier in military uniform stood at the door of the room. Seeing Lin Chao, he nodded, then knocked on the door.
Upon hearing a response from inside, the soldier opened the door, saluted, and said. “Leader! Lin Chao is here!”
After the soldier spoke, he made way for Lin Chao and Xia Wan, then closed the door behind them as they entered.
As Xia Wan entered the room, she noticed a middle-aged man in casual clothes sitting upright.
He was writing something and didn’t look up, just waved his hand and said,
“Sit down, I’ll be done here in a moment.’
Lin Chao immediately responded and seated Xia Wan on a single sofa, then sat down on another sofa opposite her.
The middle-aged man continued to write, fully engrossed, seemingly forgetting the two people waiting in the room.
It was nearly an hour later that the middle-aged man finally put down his pen and looked relieved.
He glanced at Lin Chao and Xia Wan, then stood up and walked over to them.
“Young lady, sorry to keep you waiting,” the middle-aged man said, extending his hand to Xia Wan.
Xia Wan immediately stood up and shook hands with the middle-aged man, saying, “It’s okay.”
Without saying much more, the middle-aged man, with a smile on his face, walked over to a low table, picked up a small can of tea leaves, and brought over a military thermos.
“I don’t have any good tea here, but try this,” he said while making tea for them.
Seeing this, Lin Chao immediately stood up, intending to take the thermos from the middle-aged man.
“Sit down!” the middle-aged man avoided Lin Chao’s hand with disdain, “I’ve told you so many times, there are no such formalities here!”
Lin Chao sat down somewhat awkwardly, glancing in Xia Wan’s direction.
Xia Wan calmly accented the cup of tea from the middle-aged man and
thanked him politely.
The middle-aged man nodded in satisfaction. “What a clever and sensible young lady.. “
