“Very well!”
Bai Muchuan stared at An Ying coldly, and turned to instruct two of the Operation team members.
“Pry open the door!”
With the tools in hand, the two men quickly opened the deformed door.
Without another word, Bai Muchuan gritted his teeth and dragged An Ying out of the car.
“Ah! Ouch! Pain!”
The wounded An Ying was dragged and thrown to the ground like a piece of rag.
Tsk! An Ying was growling in pain and about to get up when someone kicked him in his waist.
“Ah!
“Ah!
“Ah!”
In the winds from the mountains, An Ying was howling in pain.
Pain, to him, was simply a physical reaction he felt.
As for Bai Muchuan, he couldn’t tell where exactly it hurts…
…
When the sky was almost bright, Xiang Wan was still asleep when she heard her mobile phone ringing.
She used her hands to feel for her mobile phone without opening her eyes and swiped her screen to pick up the call.
“h.e.l.lo…”
“Xiang Wan.”
It’s actually Bai Muchuan?
Xiang Wan immediately perked up and sat up from the bed.
“Did you catch them?”
Bai Muchuan didn’t answer her. He only said, “Bring Fang Yuanyuan to the hospital right now.”
His words were simple and straight to the point. His tone was also calm.
But Xiang Wan was still sensitive enough to capture a slight hint of anxiety from him.
Xiang Wan was a little uneasy. “Okay, I’ll bring her right there away. Did… something happen to Huang He?”
Bai Muchuan was silent for a moment. He didn’t respond to her question directly. “I’ve called Uncle Zhao. He will drive you two to the hospital. We’ll meet at the hospital!”
“Alright.”
Xiang Wan did not probe further.
When she got out of bed to get dressed, her hands were shaking a bit and her heart was pounding with unease. She was distracted and overwhelmed by the restlessness in her subconsciousness… However, she immediately broke out of it when she knocked on the door of the room Fang Yuanyuan was sleeping in and was surprised when she saw tears on her face.
“Yuanyuan, what happened to you?”
Fang Yuanyuan kept their youngest aunt company last night. As it was quite late, she stayed over as well.
At this moment, Fang Yuanyuan was standing at the door, looking as though she was half-awake in her slippers and pajamas. She was still sobbing a little when she saw Xiang Wan.
“I dreamt about Huang Huang… He sacrificed himself while on duty…”
Xiang Wan: “…”
“Hurry up and get changed.” Xiang Wan sighed inside her head. “I’m bringing you to see him now.”
Bring her to see him?
Fang Yuanyuan felt her heart being crushed by a pa.s.sing huge boulder and she quickly caught hold of Xiang Wan’s hands.
“What happened? What happened to Huanghuang? Did he really sacrifice himself while on duty?”
“He’s at the hospital!” Xiang Wan knocked Fang Yuanyuan’s forehead. “Hurry up!”
…
Bai Muchuan didn’t say clearly what exactly happened to Huang He over the phone. Nonetheless, from his tone, she could tell that something serious must have happened.
Along the way, Fang Yuanyuan kept questioning Xiang Wan, who accompanied her quietly as consolation.
That day was Lunar New Year’s Eve, there was hardly any traffic on the roads.
The two of them arrived at the hospital in no time.
Fang Yuanyuan was running in front. As she ran, she was crying slightly.
Xiang Wan chased after her and soon she saw the man leaning against the wall in a corridor.
“Bai Muchuan?”
His arms were crossed as he leaned against the wall. His clothes were damp and he seemed to be downcast.
“Why are you…” Xiang Wan was rather agitated and wanted to hug him but she noticed Fang Yuanyuan’s sobbing and worried expression and decided to ask another question. “Where’s Huang He? How is he?”
Bai Muchuan’s eyes flickered a little. “He’s still inside the emergency operating theater. They’re trying to save him.”
“Emergency operating theater?” Fang Yuanyuan looked at the fully shut doors of the operating theater and felt that her knees were going weak. She supported herself with the lounge seats and sat down. “Where is he hurt? Is it serious?”
“It’s serious…” If it was not serious, then he wouldn’t be in the emergency operating theater.
Bai Muchuan looked serious. “But, his life shouldn’t be in danger…”
When Bai Muchuan finished his sentence, the doors to the operating theater opened suddenly.
A young nurse looked out. “Which one of you is the family of the patient?”
Bai Muchuan wanted to speak when Fang Yuanyuan jumped up from the chair.
“Me, I’m his family member…”
The young nurse’s gaze seemed to be sympathetic as she looked at her. “The patient is dying. You’d better come with me now…”
Dying?
Dying?
Fang Yuanyuan felt as if her surroundings were spinning, her brain suddenly deprived of oxygen. The sight before her seemed sparkly and she found herself unable to think…
“Yuanyuan.” Xiang Wan hurried to hold her.
“How is this possible? They’re lying to me, right?”
Fang Yuanyuan was similar to a lifeless body as she followed the nurse with Xiang Wan helping her along. Under the lead of the nurse, they walked to where Huang He was.
The pressure in her heart reached the extreme point.
There was no time to think more.
And no time to feel the pain.
There was only one word in her head—dying.
If Huang He’s dying, what’s the point of her living on?
“Alright then, I’ll go out now. Do hurry up and say what you need to say.”
The nurse drew the curtain and another two medical staff also left to give them some privacy.
Huang He was lying on the hospital bed.
Quiet, and seemingly lifeless.
Fang Yuanyuan only needed one look and immediately covered her mouth. Her tears instantly fell.
“Huanghuang…” She sobbed and dashed over to the man lying on the hospital bed, crying bitterly.
But the man on the bed whose eyes were closed suddenly opened his eyes and flashed a faint smile.
“Don’t cry… silly girl… don’t cry…”
“Wooo, what’s the use of coaxing me now? You’re already dying…” Fang Yuanyuan’s tears, along with her snot, were flowing non-stop. “You promised that you’ll come back safely to me and that we’ll spend our lifetime together… You’re a jerk who doesn’t mean what you say at all…”
Huang He’s eyes were smiling. “I’m still alive.”
“But you’re going to die anyway…”
“… I won’t die.”
“You’re lying!”
“…”
Huang He huffed a sigh heavily.
“Do you think a widow can receive subsidies? Silly girl.”
“…”
Eh? Something didn’t sound right?
Fang Yuanyuan’s teary eyes went big and wide-open.
“You…”
She turned her head to look at Bai Muchuan and Xiang Wan. Then she looked at Huang He’s sickly face. She seemed to have suddenly understood something and raised her fist, seemingly wanting to hit him.
“You’re lying to me? You lied to me?”
“Aiyo! Don’t! Don’t hit me, my silly wife!” Huang He cried out, “Did I disappoint you that I’m not dying? If you beat me to death, you’re committing a crime…”
“You still dare to talk about this, you still dare to talk about this?!”
“Forgive me? I’m wrong. Actually I wanted to, I just wanted to see… your sad face… so that I can remind myself that I can’t die.”
Fang Yuanyuan clenched her fists at the earlier part of his sentence.
But the moment she finished hearing the later part of the sentence, her anger was all gone.
That little twist instantly transformed the atmosphere in the ward into Spring where flowers bloom.
Fang Yuanyuan’s watery eyes stared at Huang He. She laughed then cried. “You! You’re already so badly hurt yet you still have the energy to joke around. Maybe your injuries are not that serious after all…”
Huang He then coughed twice, and was out of breath, unable to say a word.
“He didn’t lie to you.” Bai Muchuan grunted a laugh. “When he was sent to the hospital, his heartbeat had already stopped! It’s a blessing that he survived…”
After that, he took a glance at Huang He and pulled Xiang Wan. “We’ll go back first. Both of you stay here to talk. But don’t stay too long. Otherwise, the doctor might get worried. Such a big piece of meat, you should keep him for Lunar New Year.”
His humor was too dry.
Nevertheless, as long as one was alive, everything was good.
Huang He’s lips twitched. He smiled and didn’t say anything.
Fang Yuanyuan was so relieved and happy that she couldn’t stop thanking him and the medical personnel.
Such a scene, however, made Xiang Wan feel happy but a little sad at the same time.
When they came out of the ward, she took a look at the damp clothes on Bai Muchuan.
“Go back first for a change of clothes.”
“Mm.” Bai Muchuan then reached out to hold her shoulders.
Xiang Wan was already prepared to lean on his shoulder when he quickly took his arm back and even tried to keep a distance away from her—
