Chapter 39: Abrupt End of Ambiguity
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios
These words!
Xiang Wan was gripped by a feeling of anxiety as her body felt numb without knowing the reason.
He must be flirting with her deliberately!
Countless romantic stories and plots kept popping inside her brain.
However, there was not a trace of seduction or gentleness in Bai Muchuan’s humorless face.
D*mn!
Xiang Wan was always at a disadvantage whenever she talked to him; she was annoyed.
She strolled slowly with a set of newly selected pajamas in her arms.
She got nearer to him.
Advancing closer and closer…
She was so close that her body was almost touching his chest.
She stood on tiptoe, leaned over with a smile, and scrutinized him.
“What’s going on? Detective Bai, are you using your good looks as a weapon?”
Bai Muchuan leaned backward, spreading his hands as if to prove his innocence, avoiding being in close proximity with her where he could feel her breathing.
“Teacher Xiang, can I cry molest?”
When they met for the first time, she had given him a present by crying “rape”.
Xiang Wan had remembered it very clearly.
Therefore, she was suspicious as she thought he might have wanted revenge.
“You’re a detective, of course you can.”
Xiang Wan’s eyebrows were raised, and the corners of her mouth curved upward. She maintained her daring and dashing posture as she looked into the depth of his eyes without batting an eyelid.
“But I’m really curious. If I really were to do something to you, what will you do?
She asked in a low voice, a teasing smile could be seen from her eyes.
Bai Muchuan’s body tensed up. He looked at her deeply, stressing every syllable.
“I’ll punish you on the spot!”
Punish her? There he goes again!
What kind of “punishment” did he mean?
This guy really doesn’t understand, or is he pretending that he doesn’t?
Xiang Wan looked at his well-defined chiseled features, and she seemed to hear the joyous cries that came from the bottom of her heart.
Ask him!
Xiang Wan, if you have guts, ask him!
Be braver!
Be more a.s.sertive!
Don’t leave yourself with any regrets!
Whether she’s being teased or going to tease, she’s only left with tonight. What’s there to be afraid of?!
If a woman wants love, don’t be pa.s.sive. When it’s time to take the initiative, do it!
Countless motivational quotes that she had read flooded into her brain like chicken soup for the soul that made her head dizzy. The rate of her heartbeat broke all past history records.
Such was the strong power of hormones!
She held onto the pajamas tightly, her head wasn’t exactly clear. She only knew that there was a sharp twitch in her heart, stimulating her adrenal glands. She felt as if she had drunk two bottles of Erguotou 1 and couldn’t hold back the surging amount of courage…
Xiang Wan cleared her throat, her voice sounded so soft that she herself also shivered.
“Detective Bai, you hit on me intentionally yet you pretended to be honest, aren’t you tired? Well, I’ll give you a chance to confess, just say whatever you want to say.”
Bai Muchuan: “…”
He seemed dumbstruck by Xiang Wan’s boldness.
For a long time, there was no reply from him.
“Come on, can’t you be man enough?”
The corners of her lips turned further up; she was willing to risk it.
She had never done anything way out of line since she was a child. She felt a special kind of electrifying emotion and excitement for doing this the first time. Her heart almost jumped to the throat.
“Say it? Well, if you don’t say it, there won’t be any more chance tomorrow.”
“Teacher Xiang!” Bai Muchuan finally opened his mouth, his voice was calm but helpless. “Did you misunderstand something?”
Xiang Wan was startled.
Her burning heart had fallen to the freezing point.
She stood in front of him, staring at his deep eyes. There was not a trace of ambiguity.
“You really don’t mean that?”
Bai Muchuan raised his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”
Xiang Wan chuckled. “It’s the meaning I’ve said just now?”
Bai Muchuan pursed his lips. “Does female romance fiction writers like yourself have overly sensitive emotions?
Overly sensitive emotions?
This was the first time Xiang Wan heard this term.
She moistened her lips which were dry from embarra.s.sment. She gave a snort and asked him jokingly.
“If you don’t mean that, why did you flirt with me time and again?”
She had asked in such a confident and righteous manner that the only remaining ambiguous atmosphere dissipated.
At the same time, Bai Muchuan smiled.
He drew his slender fingers from his trouser pocket to support his temples and looked around the bedroom with a faint smile.
“This is my bedroom. I said I’m tired and I need to sleep. How did you relate this to other things? Huh?”
When he said the words “other things”, he had subconsciously looked toward his huge bed which was around two meters in length. There was an indescribable smile in his eyes.
“Teacher Xiang, so you’re actually an old driver in this aspect.”
Old my foot, go to h.e.l.l, you tsundere criminal!
Xiang Wan’s face had gone red till her ears. The lights were so burning bright that they did not provide her any cover and exposed her under the jesting gaze of Bai Muchuan instead. Not only was this a slap in the face, but the tiny expectation inside her heart was also wiped out completely as well.
She had gone near him teasingly to sound out his intention.
The reason she had used a joking tone was to leave an opening for her to get out of the situation.
If one asked if she had any deeper thoughts about Bai Muchuan, as a matter of fact, there was none.
“Detective Bai’s also an old driver,” Xiang Wan laughed awkwardly, “I’ll be leaving tomorrow morning, I’m afraid you might not see me then, so I gave you a chance. Since you don’t cherish it, then—bye bye.”
Her dainty hands moved to make the goodbye gesture and left with the pajamas.
Bai Muchuan turned slowly, his line of sight followed her as she walked out of the bedroom.
Suddenly, he chuckled, and he looked as though a flower had blossomed out of exhaustion.
“Teacher Xiang, do you always give men some kind of… hint?”
What? Xiang Wan felt a buzz in her ear, almost fainted from that.
She quickly turned around to glare at him.
Bai Muchuan was still leaning lazily on the door frame, her vehemently hostile gaze did not faze him. Instead, he took a cigarette out slowly, lit the cigarette with a lighter and took a puff. A devilish, unfeeling smile formed on his face as he narrowed his eyes.
“I don’t have bad intentions.”
He explained with a serene expression.
“Just wanted to remind you that such behavior is very dangerous for single women like you. You’re lucky to have met me tonight or else…”
He took another glance at his bed, and spoke slowly in a soft, feathery voice, “The location is very convenient, and even if you’re being taken advantage of, you won’t get any legal protection.”
His “malicious speculation” made Xiang Wan too ashamed to speak.
Her chest heaved as if she was panting and her eyes were red.
It was uncertain if she had reacted this way because of shame or was simulated by his jesting eyes.
Originally, she had a bit of fondness towards Bai Muchuan. Now, it was swept away like garbage inside her mind.
She asked Bai Muchuan in almost a vicious manner to retrieve the last of her dignity.
“Detective Bai, an honest man doesn’t resort to underhanded means. Do you dare to say you didn’t purposely lead me on?”
There was not a hint of change in Bai Muchuan’s good looking face.
“No.”
Xiang Wan blushed so much that her face was red like blood.
“So are you thinking that I’m flirting with you on purpose? And that I’m dropping you a hint?”
Bai Muchuan’s brows furrowed as he blinked and lowered his head to smoke. “It’s not that serious. I’m just reminding you that you need to learn how to protect yourself.”
“Put away your kindness!”
As if a bee had stung her face, she felt her face had gone stiff.
“I’m telling you for the last time that I didn’t flirt with you. I was trying to sound you out earlier as I noticed that the way you looked at me is very different. As a woman, I do have emotional sensitivity. Thus, I can see the many layers of meaning in your eyes… Bai Muchuan, if you’re a man, then don’t deny it! You’ve taken a liking to me.”
Bai Muchuan was taken aback; he squinted his eyes to inspect her.
No taunts, no jokes, he answered very seriously, “I… didn’t.”
