Chapter 151

"So, are you sure turtling is the best option here?" It was nearing the end of day 2 of the Dungeon Wars, and James was once again accompanied by Rue, as they prepared for the next big event. That being, of course, the journey to the Fields of Battle, and their first face to face opportunity against BLANK.

"Probably the safest." Rue was once again dressed in her battle armor as she hovered near James. Of course, it had taken a good part of the day for her to calm down over his nighttime shenanigans, and the creation of the M.I.N.E. Craft. He supposed her anger had been quelled mostly by the fact that he had taken screenshots of all the crazy mutated mobs that appeared, and filled her in on his latest and greats modifications.

With the radiation aspect unlocked, he was able to create traps that were essentially barrels of toxic waste. Those barrels could release a toxic field of a varying radius, which could apply radiation effects to any and all living creatures that entered that effect field. Meaning he now had a way to actively mutate his mobs on his floors, and also apply radiation effects to players. Because, who would expect nuclear waste to be floating at the bottom of the swamp? James had to chuckle about that. Who said history lessons were pointless?

"Any idea how to layout these walls?" He had the instance up for his side of the Fields of Battle. As previously advertised, it literally looked like an vast, empty expanse, lightly covered with gra.s.s and other terrain features. It was like one of those picturesque battlefields that everyone put into movies. Extremely impractical, and in no way shape or form realistic, considering the amount of infrastructure that existed on the planet, and yet, a necessity it seemed for any and all large-scale battles, no mater the media.

James currently had access to view his half of the FoB, though annoyingly he couldn't see what BLANK was up to on their side. Which made sense. IT would be a bit unfair if either dungeon could actively watch what the other core was preparing for their dungeon war. Instead, this was almost like a stratego type set up. James got to prepare his battlefield, and then watch as BLANKs forces tried to make their way to the very heart of his side of the field, where they could open the portal to his core.

"And then I'm guess day 5 we are going to go all out offensively?" James had earned a total of 960 BP. He had been utilizing his BP as he earned them, in order to prepare aspects for both offense and defense. It made sense, after all, because he couldn't use offense specific BP for defensive items, and vice versa. However, he could deploy up to a maximum of 2,000 BP worth of objects on his FoB side, made up of both offense and defense pieces, in any order.

James had initially planned on just deploying his Core Cannon and Core Shield for both aspects. Rue however, had strongly advised against that. Mainly because of the risk of the objects getting damaged in the initial a.s.sault of day three. If they were somehow overwhelmed and the objects were destroyed, James wouldn't have time to build new ones before day 5 of the Dungeon Wars. Instead, they were going with strategy.

Day three would be used to observe how the third and fifth days of Dungeon Wars worked and give his adventurers a chance to learn as well. This would also allow him to interact with the players as his Avatar and help better create a favorable offensive situation for Day 5.

It also meant he wouldn't reveal his full hand to BLANK. If all he deployed on day 3 was defensive options, there was the hope BLANK would think he was just scared, or trying to play defensive. Of course, given BLANKs gaming skills, James doubted that. But, you never know, when you're facing a player like BLANK, just how they would think. Part of James really did believe the extremely confident twins were fully expecting James to cower in fear of them. And he was happy to play into that mindset of theirs. It would make his deployment of his Core Cannon on day 5 all the sweeter.

"The best defensive is a great offense." Rue gave him a thumbs up and summoned a small battle axe in her hand. It was just like one of the axes she wielded in her berserker barbarian avatar. She was extremely excited for this portion of the dungeon wars. James didn't have the heart to tell her she had that saying backwards.

"Right, well then here goes nothing." James pulled up his deployment menu and got to work. The first thing he did was activate his core shield. The ma.s.sive piece of equipment whirled to life, and a force field surrounded his core completely. James wasn't sure if BLANKs forces would be able to make it this far on day three. However, in the off chance that they did, they would have to go through his core shield. And James had no doubt that was no small feat.

Next, he decided to deploy the offensive portions he had created. Given the fact his probes only created objects at 1BP cost per hour, he was unfortunately unable to create all 480 BP worth of offensive structures. The same could be said, frustratingly enough, for his defensive portions. However, he had at least been somewhat creative in what he had made.

The first offensive features that James had made, were catapults. These cost him a total of 10 BP per catapult. They were capable of launching any object weighing roughly under 200lbs up to 800 yards. Meaning they could launch rather large objects, extremely far. James had quickly created 10 of these ma.s.sive siege engines, for a combined total of 100BP, and set them about 100 yards from the portal area to his core. He figured players were going to sp.a.w.n during the 3rd day battle around that area anyways. Considering the fact, it felt like the appropriate area for a sp.a.w.n.

James figured catapults could serve not only as an offensive weapon, but a defensive one, making them extremely valuable. Dependent of course, on how well players were able to utile them. James had played a few games where players seemed rather inept at utilizing siege weapons such as catapults. Though, sometimes that was more of an issue with the design of the catapult system in the game, than the player themselves. James was hoping Xander and his company had done a good job on these catapults.

Next, James had ordered another rather spiffy offensive tool. And by spiffy, he meant extremely kick a.s.s. For a total of 20 BP per, James was able to structures called Mech Stations. From what he could glean from them, players could utilize Mech stations to create a large mechanical suite for them to pilot. What's more, it seemed that up to five players could utilize a mech station at a time, and the more players that used one, the more intricate and ma.s.sive the mech became.

He wasn't quite sure how that mechanic would play out, especially considering those particular stations seemed to require the players to utilize core essence in order to activate, but he had his hopes. After all, he knew his player base was going to be key in helping him overcome BLANK. Plus, his players, in mechs, charging at BLANKs forces, just sounded way too cool to pa.s.s up.

Finally, with the other 60 BP he could use, time wise, in preparation of day three, James had made a total of 60 cannons. Cannons were dirt cheap, costing him only 1 BP per. They had an effective range of up to 1500 yards, though they seemed to really drop off in accuracy pretty quickly. Currently, James only had the option to create basic cannons. However, he had observed that it seemed many of the objects he could create for Dungeon Wars, just like everything else, had improvements and upgrades that could be applied, as he leveled up in Dungeon Wars. Which would be great, as long as he won.

With his offensive pieces set, James ordered 3 of his offensive probes to begin working on some additional offensive objects, while he set the other two aside. While building was slow, he needed his two remaining probes to act as repair bots. After all, he was certain his structures were going to take damage, and he wanted to make sure he could repair them as quickly as possible. He would rather repair them, than have to build them again. And he had no idea if during Dungeon Wars, objects that were destroyed, stayed destroyed.

Defensive pieces had been a little more difficult for him to choose from. As he had previously observed, a lot of the options just included walls, barricades, and basic traps. However, just as with the mech station, it seemed the developers had thrown in a few bits and pieces to tempt dungeon cores, and to keep the wars unique and enjoyable.

One such piece for defensive options, was in the armored transport depot. Just like the mech facility, this item cost him 20 BP to craft, and allowed up to five players at a time to utilize some essence in order to create an armored vehicle to bring them to the battlefield. While that sounded neat and all, James had to pa.s.s on it. Just like he had to pa.s.s on the other object that piqued his interest.

That object was the photon turret. These turrets cost him 50 BP per, and created a circle turret with a small range of only 50 yards. Anything that came within range of it though, was automatically attacked. James had been really tempted to throw some of those up to protect his catapults, but he paused on those. He figured with 10,000 players on the battlefield, building a total of 5 turrets wouldn't really be that efficient. Forty for a total of 2,000 BP might make a difference, especially if he just created a ma.s.sive defensive line of them. But 5, was pretty meh.

As such, he resigned himself to creating a line of walls alongside his line of cannons, to allow his players to take cover behind when utilizing the ranged offensive weapons. He also created a handful of pitfall traps, which cost 1BP per 10ft x 10ft x 10ft trap, around his territory. The traps apparently would not trigger if his players pa.s.sed over them, which was nice. He positioned about 50 of those sporadically around on the battlefield, sad that he didn't have the ability to put any of his sacrificial lambs in them. Though, apparently at War Level 2, he would be able to line them with spikes for no additional cost.

With walls and traps in place, James again set aside 2 of his probes for repair purposes and set the others to work on creating even more wall sections and traps. After all, they would still come in handy on day 5 of his dungeon war, and he was certain after observing day 3, he could come up with a few more…creative ways, to utilize them, in an offensive manner. After all, it was amazing what one could do when applying their creativity in full force.

"Aright, are you ready for this Rue?" James glanced at the clock, noting there was less than an hour to go before the clock rolled over to Day 3 of Dungeon Wars. From outside his dungeon, he could see the ma.s.ses of adventurers forming up, preparing for the war. They had all begun gathering outside of his dungeon entrance, likely uncertain on if they would just be teleported to the FoB or would have to enter the dungeon. James wasn't quite sure on the mechanics for that but figured it would just be a ma.s.s teleport. He found it quite interesting that the Dungeon War mechanic seemed to actually encourage players to forgo sleep, in order to be active at all times of immersion. It definitely made his life as a dungeon core much more exciting.

The pixie flexed her muscles and grinned at James, twirling her axe dangerously. "Let's just say I've got a little pent up frustration to take out." The way she smiled at James, made him suddenly feel extremely sorry for BLANKs forces.
