Chapter 1 Part 5 Life on the mountain is hard
Translator: Kuhaku
I'm getting pretty strong and if this continues, in a not too far future, my card would change or at least some parts of it would fade.
I gently put the guild card back into my pocket. I've got to do something I've never done before, at least that's the big plan for the day, and I can't be bothered by the G.o.ddess.
It's my first demon hunt. Although, it's not like I wasn't antagonized by them before, but this time I'm going to be the one going after them.
The problem is that they're pretty strong and I can't get through the forest if I can't beat the one's in the forest.
My skills are certainly up, but it's better if I stay focused and take it all in. It's pretty common to hear about strong warriors being killed in an instant because of a moment of self-consciousness. That's why I prefer not to be on guard.
I don't think I could beat a demon with just my body, especially without a weapon.
But then how do I go about defeating them?
It's simple if you think about it. You wait… Until you have trapped it. The trap I've laid is a cla.s.sic, just a deep pit.
The strategy maybe simple, but it is undeniably effective.
I dug it as deep as I could with my current strength and it was pretty deep; covered it with foliage to completely hide it and I hid near the pit to wait for it to work.
I obviously carried portable food like gra.s.ses and nuts, it's always better to be careful. All this effort would be meaningless if I was attacked by demons while waiting for one to fall into the pit.
Fortunately, because of my time in the cave I had become used to the danger of being attacked. Although now I have developed at least a little confidence in my ability to perceive signs of a threat. Initially I've had many sleepless nights hearing the demons' howls, not knowing how far they were.
Now that I don't hear them howl when they're fast asleep, it's probably the most nerve-racking thing. However, if they don't come near me to some extent the whole plan won't fall through.
Because I had grown in the wild, I had developed a sense to feel when I was being approached. I looked in the direction where I felt I was being approached from.
No! It can't be… I don't think so …! Why is it so? Why is it here? No…
No! That's exactly what I was looking for!
It wasn't bony, it was plump and looked delicious… Plump and delicious meat! I'd prefer to eat some crunchy meat at this point instead of something soft.
I walked up to the pitfall scratching my head and looked down to see the creature writhing in agony, being caught in my trap. I sighed and looked for a stone as big as my fist.
To kill any creature, it is important to either damage its body using magic or by somehow destroying its nucleus, which is located randomly in its body.
I destroyed the nucleus in a single attempt with the stone I threw.
"Empty," I said looking up at the sky.
The flesh was delicious… Slightly sweet… But delicious…
I increased the number of traps to raise my chances of getting meat. I also added new things to the trap, like pointed hooks to latch on to the prey and spears at the bottom of the pit to kill them. I also used my knowledge of poisonous and numbness inducing plants, rather my experience of eating them, to pool them in the trap. That should take care of most demons which fall in it.
There is a river near the cave, I can use that to wash up. I also don't have any clothes, while that is only an embarra.s.sing circ.u.mstance now, it will soon turn into a matter of survival when winter comes around. It's going to be cold and I don't do well in dealing with the cold.
The demons' skin could be used to make clothes, I guess it's best to make clothes for now. It'll be useful while leaving the forest as well.
The demons seem to be taking their own sweet time, I guess it has something to do with their distribution in the forest. Anyway, I better spend my time training and getting stronger, I'll have no trouble doing that.
This ecosystem is terrible and there are quite a few demons way stronger than me. I'll have to raise my levels and become extraordinarily strong.
Looking back, about a year ago, I might have lost the chance to be the hero…
Never mind! I've decided! I'm going to be strong right here! I'll be strong enough become anything I want to be! I don't ever want to lose anything anymore…
The forest won't be enough to make me strong. I'll need to challenge the demon living in the mountains. I changed my strategy to become strong while focusing my attention to the demons in the forest. I will eat everything I find from killing the demons, I'll use their fur to make clothes. Even though I don't have needles, I'll use their fangs to do the job. Once I have enough warm clothes, I'm going to go to the mountains to accustom myself to its harsh condition.
I need to acclimate myself to the environmental conditions. When I do succeed in doing so, I'll get better at surviving there like in the forest. I'll use poisons and paralyzing plants to reduce the movement speed of most demons. It doesn't matter how long it takes; I'll have to take care of my life. I can't afford to lose my sense of reason and logic. After all the defeated monsters were eaten, I considered the pa.s.sage of time.
How long has it been since I ended up here? I think roughly one and a half years. I can't really be sure; however, I have made a lot of progress. I took a demon fang and tried to stick it in my finger, my skin didn't budge even a bit.
