"...Ae Young."
The last person to be called was a slim, pet.i.te girl with clear eyes and dark hair that looked like she could have belonged anywhere as part of a popular idol group from Earth.
Clay couldn't help himself from looking at her, at the same time he knew it was rude so he shook his head away from the sight of the last recruit to join their squadron.
"Remember those around you, for the better part of your stay on Groot Colony these people in your squadron will be closer than your family or friends, they will have the important task of watching your back and safeguarding your life. However the same holds true for you, the heavy responsibility of their lives are now in your hands, you will learn to work as a team. This is the squadron that you will be part of." Finishing his small speech Colonel Lambshawks stared at the group in front of while countless thoughts seemed to flow in his mind, but still his words were resolute and firm. As the field commander responsible for the safety of everyone on the Groot Colony he had arrived to his position with a fair share of grief and it was not only because of his abilities to have naturally awakened as a psionic but also his strong command of the field that paved the way for his current role as Colonel.
"Good, the introductions will finish here and someone will come in a moment to address any concerns you might have as well as start the initial a.s.sessment of your abilities. ATTENTION."
Making a sharp salute, Colonel Lambshawks heroically strode of the stage. The hall remained silent, some of the recruits were from military backgrounds while others had been raised by their Federation to the role and position they now occupied by virtue of their skills and tenacity, but more importantly because they survived the first a.s.sessment: the Staircase Programme.
Clay knew from the memories that he found inside his head that the body he was in, had yet to turn twenty this year. It was a far cry from his real age back on Earth, in actual fact looking around, many of the faces that he could see in the squadrons were relatively young, this was a certain factor in their success in surviving the artificial awakening treatment. Jigme Chokphel was a young man who had been made his life his own despite the various experiences he had faced, parents that had abandoned him one by one, and an escalating worthless sense of self. He was a person who had a serious history of suicidal thoughts but pulled through. Unfortunately the end still came, for some reason that he didn't know Clay had by some miracle replaced the soul of Jigme. By any other standards he was an anomaly, an outlier.
Colonel Lambshawks was right, it didn't take long for other people to enter the hall and lead the squadrons away one by one for further medical treatment and diagnostics.
Time seemed to pa.s.s very slow as they all took turns to evaluate their health and carry out some simple exercises as people in standardised uniforms took notes.
Eventually it was finally Clay's turn. "Jigme Chokphel?"
Nodding, Clay looked at the uniformed female in front of him whose face seemed to remain stern and serious.
"Stand there", pointing to strange apparatus that reminded Clay of scales, Clay walked towards the metallic contraption. Standing still he followed every movement that the uniformed female in front of him asked, glancing at her lapel he soon figured out her name. 'Irene'.
"Do you understand what your ability is?" The questions abrupt and woke Clay from his silent reverie.
He carefully nodded before looking into the eyes of Irene whose eyes seemed to emit a sign of interest for the first time. "Good, please if you will."
Slowly breathing in and expelling the air inside to calm his nerves, Clay tried to remember the process he experienced when he first awakened. A small burst of energy seemed to form in the air in front of him slowly taking a golden colour that looked remarkably like a wisp that playfully danced in the air in front of him.
The form of the wisp remained indistinct but vague features could be seen and a presence like eyes that appeared to be looking at you could be felt.
"Aur spin in a circle," the wisp seemed to be sentient and understand what Clay meant as it began to move in a certain way.
A shock could be heard in the air as Irene became shocked at the surprising even happening in front of her. "That's incredible, this is the first time I have seen a psionic demonstrate a psi manifestation, it seems to be alive!"
A grin could be seen on Clay's face which quickly disappeared as the stress of using his psi energy took a toil on his body and the wisp of energy disappeared after making an impromptu performance.
"Jigme Chokphel." His name was repeated twice, perhaps he had overdone it, for some reason Clay felt innately proud for once since arriving into this new world.
