Gu Jiao took out the map. Ever since learning of the Emperor's intentions, Xiao Heng had meticulously studied the records and specially drawn a detailed map of the Songshan Mountain Range for Gu Jiao. The map marked three enemy encampments targeted for raids and outlined various routes leading to the three major beacon camps.
Pointing at the map, Gu Jiao said, "Our current position is closer to the southeast. Let’s head there first to catch up with Fifth Master Han and Jun Xiuhan."
Gu Changqing frowned and wondered aloud,"Between those two, who do you think is the spy?"
"The one heading to raid the enemy camp must be a cavalryman, while the one taking a detour is the spy." Gu Jiao explained, pointing to the cinnabar-marked route on the map. "If they’re not raiding the camp, based on a cavalry’s normal speed, the spy should have reached this position by now. We’ll take the eastern route to get ahead of them and block their path."
Even the route was planned in advance—it seemed his sister had truly come prepared.
The Black Wind Cavalry horses instinctively followed the Black Wind King. With the Black Wind King leading, the horses galloped at an astonishing speed.
Gu Changqing even felt that the horse was faster than when he usually rode it.
However, plans often failed to keep up with changes. Instead of catching up with Fifth Master Han and Jun Xiuhan, they unexpectedly encountered Mu Qingchen charging from another direction.
Gu Jiao tightened her reins.
Gu Changqing also came to a halt.
The two silently observed Mu Qingchen from a distance, both puzzled by the unexpected encounter.
"He was clearly heading east earlier." Gu Changqing murmured.
“He keeps looking back, as if someone is chasing him.” Gu Jiao said. “Could it be… he’s the spy, and Taoist Qingfeng has already uncovered the real mission, so he’s trying to seize the secret letter from him?”
Gu Changqing said, "I’ll go take the letter. You stay here and don’t reveal yourself."
"Alright." Gu Jiao nodded and stroked the Black Wind King’s mane.
The Black Wind King understood her intent and gradually lowered its imposing presence.
Hidden behind a towering tree, Gu Jiao and the Black Wind King remained motionless as Gu Changqing swiftly charged toward Mu Qingchen.
Caught off guard, Mu Qingchen instinctively drew his sword and struck in defense.
The sword qi he unleashed carried a biting gale, sweeping up the fallen leaves in the forest into a ma.s.sive vortex that surged toward Gu Changqing with overwhelming force.
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow.
It seemed Mu Qingchen had been holding back all along. When he fought against the direct descendants of the five major n.o.ble families in the forest, he hadn’t used his full strength.
Even during his duel with the w.a.n.g Family, he hadn’t gone all out.
Gu Changqing, a seasoned warrior accustomed to the battlefield, would never underestimate his opponent. The moment Mu Qingchen made his move, Gu Changqing had already drawn the treasured sword at his waist, countering Mu Qingchen’s attack with a fearsome slash of sword qi.
The vortex of leaves was forcefully split apart by Gu Changqing’s sword qi, and the scattered leaves, sharp as blades, turned back on Mu Qingchen.
Mu Qingchen quickly twirled his sword to fend them off.
In that brief moment of defense, Gu Changqing stepped into the stirrup, leapt into the air, and struck Mu Qingchen off his horse with a palm strike.
Out of consideration for Mu Qingchen’s past a.s.sistance to Gu Jiao, Gu Changqing refrained from injuring him with his sword and instead used his left palm to knock him off the horse.
As Mu Qingchen attempted to get up, Gu Changqing landed steadily and pressed his sword against Mu Qingchen’s neck.
Mu Qingchen looked at Gu Changqing with a strange expression, "Han Zeyu?"
"Hand over the bamboo tube." Gu Changqing demanded, looking down at him.
Mu Qingchen frowned coldly, pulled the bamboo tube from his chest, and tossed it to Gu Changqing.
Gu Changqing caught it with a swift motion.
Mu Qingchen sneered and said icily, "Do all Han Family members resort to such unscrupulous methods to achieve their goals?"
Gu Changqing retorted, "Is this your first day knowing the Han Family?"
The act of s.n.a.t.c.hing the bamboo tube didn’t arouse Mu Qingchen’s suspicion. After all, it was a plausible tactic to sabotage the cavalryman’s mission.
Concerned that Mu Qingchen might have handed over a fake letter, Gu Changqing opened the bamboo tube to inspect it.
Fortunately, he did.
It turned out Mu Qingchen wasn’t the spy at all; he was the cavalryman from the third beacon camp!
Gu Changqing was baffled. Why would a cavalryman abandon the mission to attack the enemy camp and come here instead?
Feigning calm, Gu Changqing asked, "Weren’t you heading due east? Why are you on this route?"
Mu Qingchen said irritably, "That Taoist keeps following me, and I can’t shake him off. I had no choice but to take a longer route."
Who could truly understand the fear of being stalked by a formidable figure?
Gu Jiao held her forehead in exasperation.
She had forgotten that the monk had mentioned to her before that Taoist Qingfeng was hopelessly bad with directions.
Taoist Qingfeng wasn’t following Mu Qingchen because of suspicion; he was simply lost, unable to find his way.
As for why he specifically chose to follow Mu Qingchen out of everyone, it was because two days ago, he had borrowed a compa.s.s from the Imperial Advisor. The compa.s.s could point him in the general direction he needed to go, and since both he and Mu Qingchen were heading east, he decided to follow.
However, whenever Mu Qingchen deviated from that direction, Taoist Qingfeng would stop following him.
Gu Changqing sheathed his sword and said, "I won’t harm you. Just consider yourself out of the compet.i.tion."
There was no way he would return the bamboo tube to Mu Qingchen; doing so would risk exposing the hidden mission.
Gu Changqing mounted his horse again, taking a long detour back to where Gu Jiao was waiting. By then, Mu Qingchen had already ridden off.
"Are we going to find Taoist Qingfeng next?" Gu Changqing asked.
Gu Jiao thought for a moment before replying. "Taoist Qingfeng is too difficult to deal with. Let’s find Fifth Master Han and Jun Xiuhan first and secure an ally."
"Alright." Gu Changqing agreed without hesitation.
He had never considered himself the leader of this mission. He respected every decision his sister made and was willing to do whatever it took to support her.
Following the shortest route marked on the map, the two arrived at the second beacon camp’s raid location——Huangshu Slope.
The camp had not yet been overrun by the cavalryman. The two revealed themselves and swiftly wiped out the enemy forces in one fell swoop.
The soldiers here were NPCs for the selection trial, not real enemies. Gu Jiao and Gu Changqing were careful not to injure anyone, merely tying them all up.
Afterward, the two settled in for a long wait.
"Who do you think will show up, Jun Xiuhan or Fifth Master Han?" Gu Jiao asked.
"Who do you want it to be?" Gu Changqing countered.
"Fifth Master Han." Gu Jiao replied.
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
The sound of galloping hooves grew louder, and sure enough, it was Fifth Master Han!
Gu Jiao quickly hid with the Black Wind King.
After Fifth Master Han arrived at the site, he looked around at the disordered temporary camp, then glanced at Gu Changqing on his horse. His brow furrowed as he asked, "What happened?"
Gu Changqing replied, "By order of His Highness the Crown Prince, I am here to a.s.sist you, Fifth Master. I saw you heading southeast and decided to take a shortcut to meet up with you. On the way, I heard the sounds of a fight and came to investigate."
"What is your mission?" Fifth Master Han asked.
Gu Changqing tossed his bamboo tube to him.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
