The rest of the people present were unaware that the Black Wind King had already retired, but Han Che was fully aware of it.

This horse was old and already unfit for battle. Moreover, it seemed to have been triggered by some unknown stimulus, driving it into a frenzy to search for its former master. The Han Family had determined that it no longer held any military value.

Officially, the Han Family claimed that it had been retired.

In truth, they had abandoned it, leaving it to fend for itself.

According to Chu Nan, once the horse realized its former master would never return, it would unhesitatingly sacrifice itself to join him in death.

Suddenly, he understood. It must have been Xiao Liulang who took the horse in. Xiao Liulang was a physician; who knew what methods he used to prolong the Black Wind King's life.

But alas, the Black Wind King had long lost its fighting spirit. So what if its life was extended? It was nothing more than a walking corpse now, an empty sh.e.l.l of its former self!

Having figured everything out, Han Che felt no fear or apprehension in his heart anymore. Instead, it was replaced by an endless stream of mockery and disdain.

“So, it’s you, Xiao Liulang.” He sneered, his gaze falling on Gu Jiao’s spirited face, which was marred by a prominent red birthmark. Han Che sat astride his own Black Wind Cavalry horse and said with biting sarcasm, “Couldn’t afford a horse, so you decided to steal our Han Family’s old Black Wind King instead?”

As soon as he said this, the crowd gasped in shock.

"What? Stole?"

"His Black Wind King was stolen?"

“That explains it! I was wondering how Han shizi’s mount could have ended up in the hands of this brat.”

The surrounding partic.i.p.ants began whispering amongst themselves, exchanging astonished and incredulous looks.

To cavalrymen, horses were like weapons to martial experts; no one didn’t wish to have the best.

But the best was often out of their reach, and they would never want their opponents to have it.

If the horse belonged to someone unattainable, they could make peace with that.

But the moment it was taken by an ordinary person, this balance would shatter.

The idea that "it was stolen" undoubtedly made it easier for them to accept the situation and feel a little better about themselves.

Unfortunately for them, Gu Jiao was not here to cater to anyone’s self-soothing delusions. She was here to shatter their illusions.

Gu Jiao remained composed as she said, "Your Han Family's Black Wind King, you say? Then call it and see if it responds."

Han Che faltered for a moment, his gaze sharpening as he looked at the horse beneath Gu Jiao. Straightening his expression, he commanded, “Black Wind King! Come here!”

The Black Wind King didn’t move.

"Black Wind King!"

Han Che issued another command.

The Black Wind King stayed as still as a mountain.

Han Che frowned.

Strange. This horse wasn’t usually this indifferent toward him. Even if it refused to let him ride it, it would at least give some sort of reaction——

Han Che racked his brain desperately, and suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck him. “The horseshoes! The horseshoes on its hooves are from our Han Family!”

Gu Jiao patted the Black Wind King and said casually, “Come on, Big Boss, lift your hoof and let this blind man take a good look.”

Han Che was infuriated. “Who are you calling blind?”

The Black Wind King obediently lifted its hoof.

Its hoof was no longer shod with the Han Family's horseshoes; they had been replaced with new ones from the Imperial Advisor's Hall.

If Han Che had the guts, he could go argue with the Imperial Advisor's Hall and accuse them of stealing the Han Family’s horse.

Han Che gritted his teeth and switched tactics. "Xiao Liulang, you have no right to compete here!"

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow and said coolly, “If I’m here, it means I have every right to compete. Speaking of which, hasn’t your Han Family also hired someone to pretend to be a collateral descendant?”

"You…" Han Che stammered, suddenly fl.u.s.tered and unable to respond.

On the other side, among the watching soldiers, Han Che’s father's deputy commander subtly shook his head at him, signaling not to let Xiao Liulang lead him by the nose any further.

The more he spoke, the more he ended up proving that the Black Wind King truly belonged to Xiao Liulang.

Taking a deep breath, Han Che forced himself to calm the surging anger in his chest. He snorted coldly and sneered, “What are you so proud of? It’s just an old horse that our Han Family threw away. We’ve already replaced it with a new Black Wind King. You can take this old useless thing if you want it!”

"So it’s an old horse."

"I did hear something about the Black Wind King retiring."

"Throwing it away after it retires—doesn't that seem heartless?"

"I heard it left on its own."

"Clearly, the brat stole it!"

"Enough, none of that matters. Bringing an old horse to compete—has this kid lost his mind?"

A sixteen-year-old horse was long past its prime.

If it were in the hands of the Han Family, an excellent horse trainer might have been able to extend its service life, but in the hands of an ordinary kid, it was no different from a useless horse.

Perhaps sensing the emotions of the crowd, or maybe the other horses themselves had realized the Black Wind King’s age, they calmed down.

So what if it was once a king?

In the end, it had grown old.

It was the younger, stronger horses that triumphed on the battlefield!

At the sharp command of the examiner, each partic.i.p.ant took their place in front of their own fire bridges, preparing for the challenge ahead.

In a certain sense, the cavalrymen on both sides had a slight advantage, being influenced only by one party, while the cavalrymen in the middle were caught in a pincer attack, their horses facing the greatest impact.

Gu Jiao was stationed at the third fire bridge. To her left was the expert from the Feng Family, and to her right was another expert riding a Black Wind Cavalry horse.

The Black Wind King remained calm, unaffected by the tension around them.

By contrast, the other horses were pawing at the ground, eager to charge forward, looking much more like warhorses ready to storm into battle.

It truly looked old, completely indifferent to the dangers around it.

"Do you think it will fail to cross and get burned to death?"

"It won’t be burned to death, but it could get seriously injured."

"It looks like it's struggling. Do you think it's too old to move at all?"

The murmurs of the onlookers echoed around them, and no one seemed to have any faith left in the sixteen-year-old Black Wind King.

The Feng family expert turned to Han Che and said, "It seems that the winner of this round will be decided between you and me."

Han Che replied haughtily, "You’re wrong. There’s no place for you in this."
