Rui w.a.n.gfei wanted to tell her that there was no need to be so nervous and that this pregnancy felt like nothing at all. However, as the words reached her lips, she thought of Ning w.a.n.gfei's three miscarriages and closed her mouth in the end.
She cooperated and pretended to be more cautious than usual, taking slower steps.
"Is pregnancy difficult?" On the way to the Kunning Palace, Ning w.a.n.gfei chatted with her about everyday matters.
Rui w.a.n.gfei's eyes flickered, "Um... It's difficult. I can't sleep at night, and my legs cramp."
These were what the wetnurse always asked her, but she actually had never experienced it herself.
If she had to mention something difficult, it would probably be having to run to the outhouse all the time.
And exactly right now, she was feeling a little bit like that.
"What's wrong?" Ning w.a.n.gfei asked, looking at Rui w.a.n.gfei's wrinkled face.
Rui w.a.n.gfei blushed and said, "I... I need to relieve myself."
Ning w.a.n.gfei replied, "There's a chamber nearby, I'll accompany you."
Rui w.a.n.gfei declined, "No, it's fine. I'll go by myself."
"I don't feel at ease letting you go alone." Ning w.a.n.gfei insisted on escorting Rui w.a.n.gfei to the vicinity of the chamber, and Rui w.a.n.gfei had no choice.
When the two of them arrived outside the chamber, they never expected to run into the Crown Princess coming out from inside.
All three of them froze for a moment.
The Crown Princess held a higher status compared to the other imperial daughter-in-laws, but she still politely called Ning w.a.n.gfei "sister-in-law."
Rui w.a.n.gfei rolled her eyes.
She didn't like Wen Linlang and couldn't be bothered with formalities.
Especially after she caught Wen Linlang entangled with another man the last time, her dislike for her just grew stronger.
It was well-known that Ning w.a.n.g and the Crown Prince didn't get along, and Ning w.a.n.gfei obviously kept her distance from the Crown Princess as well, but they still maintained a facade.
She exchanged a slight nod with the Crown Princess as a greeting.
The Crown Princess said, "I have some matters to attend to. Goodbye, eldest sister-in-law, third sister-in-law."
Ning w.a.n.gfei replied, "Goodbye."
Rui w.a.n.gfei responded with an eye roll.
After the Crown Princess left, Ning w.a.n.gfei said to Rui w.a.n.gfei, "Alright, you can go now."
"Okay." Rui w.a.n.gfei went to the chamber.
Pregnancy had this inconvenience of needing to use the latrine frequently. After coming out of the chamber, Rui w.a.n.gfei had a servant help her wash her hands and apply hand cream. Then she followed Ning w.a.n.gfei to Empress Xiao's Kunning Palace.
They were not the Empress's direct daughters-in-law, so they exchanged formalities and pleasantries very politely and formally before leaving Kunning Palace.
Afterwards, the two of them went to Imperial Consort Zhuang's Yongshou Palace. This time, they stayed there for a while longer. Imperial Consort Zhuang had some expectations for the unborn child in Rui w.a.n.gfei's belly, as it was from her own people.
Rui w.a.n.g and w.a.n.gfei received favor while Ning w.a.n.g was also given additional support.
"You must give birth to a son." Imperial Consort Zhuang held Rui w.a.n.gfei's hand and said.
Rui w.a.n.gfei smiled wryly, "That's not for this daughter-in-law to decide, Your Highness."
Imperial Consort Zhuang thought for a moment and asked, "Do you prefer sour foods or spicy foods?"
Rui w.a.n.gfei honestly replied, "This daughter-in-law likes both. Sometimes I crave spicy, sometimes sour, and sometimes sweet."
Ning w.a.n.gfei's expression seemed a bit absent-minded.
Imperial Consort Zhuang considered her own daughter-in-law's mood and didn't mention the topic of children any further. She called for a trusted palace maid and instructed, "Go and ask where Ning w.a.n.g and Rui w.a.n.g are. If they are in the palace, have them come to the Yongshou Palace for a meal, and invite Imperial Concubine Yu as well."
Imperial Concubine Yu was the imperial concubine mother of the Third Prince.
After the princes were a.s.signed separate residences outside the palace, they were no longer as free to come and go from the imperial palace as before. However, with Imperial Consort Zhuang's status, it was not difficult for her to see her son.
Before long, Ning w.a.n.g and Rui w.a.n.g arrived from the imperial audience hall.
"Your Highness." Ning w.a.n.gfei bowed to Ning w.a.n.g.
Ning w.a.n.g hurried over, supported her, and gently held her hand. His eyes were filled with tenderness as he spoke, "You don't need to be so restrained here with imperial consort mother; it's the same as being in the prince’s residence.”
Ning w.a.n.gfei smiled and replied, "Yes."
Imperial Concubine Yu also arrived quickly, and Imperial Consort Zhuang hurriedly had the palace servants prepare the meal.
Imperial Consort Zhuang sat together with Imperial Concubine Yu, while the two couples sat on either side of them.
Ning w.a.n.g and his wife displayed graceful and elegant manners, showing mutual respect to each other.
Rui w.a.n.g and his wife maintained a serious demeanor on the surface. But privately, Rui w.a.n.g brushed his leg against his wife's leg.
Rui w.a.n.gfei glared at him meaningfully, just eat your food!
Rui w.a.n.g casually peeled a shrimp for his wife and placed it in Rui w.a.n.gfei's bowl. Only then did he realize that everyone's gaze had fallen upon him.
His heart skipped a beat. He had almost forgotten that they were in the imperial palace, not in their own residence, and they had to abide by the palace rules and etiquettes.
The couple couldn't help but feel a bit awkward.
Ning w.a.n.g smiled warmly and said, "The shrimp in the palace is well-prepared." He also peeled a shrimp for Ning w.a.n.gfei and said, "Suxin, give it a try."
Suxin was the courtesy name Ning w.a.n.g gave to Ning w.a.n.gfei after their wedding.
Ning w.a.n.gfei smiled tenderly and said, "Thank you, Your Highness."
……
After finishing their lunch, Imperial Consort Zhuang went to rest for the afternoon. The group of four left the Yongshou Palace while Imperial Concubine Yu returned to her own place.
Four people walked outside the palace together.
"Be careful." As they pa.s.sed under a large tree, Ning w.a.n.g used his hand to shield Ning w.a.n.gfei's head.
When he removed his hand, they noticed a worm on the back of his hand.
Rui w.a.n.gfei couldn't name the tree, but she often saw worms hanging from its branches, spinning silk threads.
There was a worm right in front of her, and if Ning w.a.n.g hadn't called out, she would have walked right into it.
Rui w.a.n.gfei exclaimed, "Eldest brother-in-law is so thoughtful!"
Rui w.a.n.g muttered, "I'm thoughtful too!"
Rui w.a.n.gfei sighed and said, "Oh, then why didn't your highness notice the worm in front of me?"
Rui w.a.n.g scratched his head, "Well, I was..."
"You were what?" Rui w.a.n.gfei looked at him questioningly.
"I was just about to get rid of it for you!" Rui w.a.n.g firmly denied that he hadn't noticed such a small thing!
Rui w.a.n.gfei snorted, "You just don't have the thoughtfulness of eldest brother-in-law!"
This was something Rui w.a.n.g couldn't refute. His eldest brother was the most considerate among all the imperial princes. He was considerate towards his sister-in-laws and towards his younger brothers. Even in his treatment to the Crown Prince, his sworn enemy, one couldn't find any faults.
Pregnant women's emotions sometimes came inexplicably. One moment, Rui w.a.n.gfei was arguing with Rui w.a.n.g, and the next moment, she became melancholic, "You know... if we can't keep this child... will you still be as good to me as eldest brother-in-law is to sister-in-law?"
Rui w.a.n.g glared at her and said, "Why are you saying such nonsense? Why would we not be able to keep the child? Don't jinx it! My son will be fine!"
Rui w.a.n.gfei sighed, "I'm just hypothetically speaking. I just feel that eldest brother-in-law is really good to sister-in-law."
Rui w.a.n.g couldn't refute her on that.
Ning w.a.n.g and Ning w.a.n.gfei had known each other since they were young. They weren't childhood sweethearts, but their marriage wasn't a blind arrangement either.
After getting married, the two of them had a harmonious relationship. The only regret was Ning w.a.n.gfei's inability to conceive. Fortunately, Ning w.a.n.g never neglected her because of it, and he always spoke well of her in front of Imperial Consort Zhuang.
Imperial Consort Zhuang wasn't an easy person to get along with, and the credit for the harmonious relationship between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law belonged in large part to Ning w.a.n.g.
He was a man who would never mistreat his wife.
Rui w.a.n.gfei held onto the hem of Rui w.a.n.g's clothes and said coquettishly, "Promise me, you'll treat me as well as eldest brother-in-law treats sister-in-law, for the rest of our lives."
