Su Jin Wei nodded, he thought as much. He sat on the bed and waited for her to continue.
"Some men came into our house with masks and guns. My uncle was there and the man in the news who lost all of his stuff recently."
Su Jin Wei's lips thinned. "Zhuang Bo Chao."
Modesty nodded.
"Yes him. They walked in together behind the men with the masks and then everything went black."
Su Jin Wei stroked Modesty's head.
"We suspected that Zhuang Bo Chao was involved with you and your parents' accident. We just didn't know if he was working alone or if he had an accomplice. But now that you remember some details, we can work on rectifying the situation."
Tears started streaming down Modesty's face.
"But what I don't understand is why they would kill my parents and try to kill me. If my uncle wanted me dead why did he take care of me for so long?"
Su Jin Wei reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief and wiped Modesty's tears.
"We know that the Zuangs blamed your parents for their business loss and the subsequent breaking of the engagement between their daughter and me."
Modesty looked at Su Jin Wei with surprise and a little jealousy, she didn't know that he was engaged to Zhuang Bo Chao's daughter.
"As far as your uncle is concerned, I can only suspect that he wanted control of your father's company."
Modesty shook her head and started crying again.
"But what about me?"
"You weren't supposed to be with your parents. You were supposed to stay with us, you wanted to stay and we wanted you to stay. But, had that happened, then your parents would have died and you wouldn't. Also, I think that's why your uncle took you from us, he wanted to control and manipulate your memory of what happened. He could lie and say that you were remembering it wrong."
Modesty sighed, what he said was true. She suspected that was why her uncle tried to keep her from coming here all those years. Even when her high school was going to do a field trip here during the summer, her uncle convinced her not to go. Saying that it would dredge up hurtful memories of her parents' deaths so she listened and didn't go.
