Domo domo~ Onion here~

A few things before we start .

I’m going to try to be a lil more confident in my translations, because people say that it sorta breaks up the flow of the reading, and I see that . So I won’t put as many notes in and stuff like that, and if they’re important to the story, I’ll probably put it in the text instead of making you scroll down, while mundane stuff you can check on at the end .

Once again, if there’s anything wrong with my translation, say so . Enjoy the chapter!

The Princess Knight and Breakfast

It’s the morning at the lakeside, and the two of them are in the RV .
Sofia was sitting in the kotatsu in the 6-mat, and Naoto was working in the kitchen .
Using full use of Patricia’s interior, like the rice cooker, the dishwasher, and cooking heater, he made breakfast .

(TL: Patricia is the name of the RV, if you forgot . )

“Naoto, what kind of magic is that?” (Sofia)

“Hm? What’s magic?” (Naoto)

He kept his eyes on the frying pan while replying to Sofia over his shoulder .

“Naoto’s burning something right now, but I can’t see any fire being used, and I can’t see any traces of fire . How do you do that?” (Sofia)

“Ah, this is IH . Uh…”

(TL: IH = Induction Heating)

Saying that, Naoto tilted his head .

“Speaking of which, how exactly does a IH heater work…?” (Naoto)

He thinks in a pose while looking up at the ceiling .
He knows how gas and electric stoves work, but doesn’t know how IH heating works .
That is to say, he had been using it like it was normal but had no idea how it works .

“Well, whatever . ” (Naoto)

“What?” (Sofia)

“Nothing . Well, think of it as a tool that turns electricity to heat . ” (Naoto)

“Electricity?” (Sofia)

“Yeah . This car is all electric . It runs with something like the power of lightning…” (Naoto)

“I see, it is true that lightning emits heat . ” (Sofia)

Sofia nods her head in agreement .

“This car uses the lightning, and can store and take it out without losing any . Oh, it also uses the power of the sun . ” (Naoto)

“I see, it is true that the sun is hot . ” (Sofia)

Sofia was very easy to convince .

“…what a kid . ”

Naoto muttered involuntarily .

After a little while, the baking is finished, and cooking is complete .
Naoto carried the items he made to the kotatsu one by one, and arranged them .

“Sorry for the wait . ” (Naoto)

“This… this is all food I’ve never seen . ” (Sofia)

“Is that so?” (Naoto)

“Ah . ” (Sofia)

Sofia nodded, and then Naoto explained each item individually .
Shiny, fully-cooked white rice, steaming daikon radish miso soup, and crunchy-skinned salmon cut into pieces .
And-

“Are those… beans?” (Sofia)

“Ah, we call those natto . ” (Naoto)

“Natto . ” (Sofia)

“Yes, natto . ” (Naoto)

White rice, and one soup, three dishes . [1] Two of those were lined up on the kotatsu .
For a person like Naoto, who had never traveled, it was a comforting sight to see .
Naoto and Sofia sat opposite each other, and said “itadakimasu” . [2]

On the other side of him, a knight who stood out in the j.a.panese-style room was eating his cooking . [3]

“Muu…” (Sofia)

“What’s wrong? Eat up . ” (Naoto)

“Muu… This… but…” (Sofia)

For some reason, a dissapointed-looking Sofia was comparing her own food to Naoto’s .

“It’s the same thing…” (Sofia)

“Ah, I made the two exactly the same . ” (Naoto)

“So, Naoto eats this as well…” (Sofia)

“Yeah, what of it?” (Naoto)

What are you doing, wondered Naoto .
Looking at her closely, he saw that her eyes were focused on one thing, rather than the whole breakfast .
For the j.a.panese Naoto, he would agree that natto should be considered a national food .
But Sofia was a princess-knight of another world .

“Oh, you don’t know how to eat natto?” (Naoto)

“Eh, ah- ah-“ (Sofia)

“Let me do it . ” (Naoto)

Naoto said that, and then took Sofia’s natto and mixed it with his chopsticks .

“You mix it?” (Sofia)

“You have to mix it well, yeah . ” (Naoto)

“There’s a string…” (Sofia)

“This stickiness is life . ” (Naoto)

He gently mixed it so that the fermented natto wouldn’t break up .
Shaka, shaka, shaka, shaka .
After a minute of mixing it, the natto was covered in a white thread .
The smell that came out triggered the memory of the delicious taste, and Naoto’s mouth started overflowing with saliva .
Naoto was mixing the natto, while Sofia watched mesmerized .

“Here you are . ” (Naoto)

“Uuuu~” (Sofia)

She received it, but frowned .

“The smell… I’m pulling a thread…” (Sofia)

“Oh, be careful when eating . The smell sticks to you if you spill . ” (Naoto)

“Sticky… smell…” (Sofia)

“Aaah, that’s the kind of food it is . ” (Naoto)

As Sofia hesitated, the puppy came over with a pitter-patter, attracted by the smell .
It laid down and looked at Naoto with an innocent face .

“Kuu-n” (Puppy)

“You’re awake, puppy . Want to eat some food?” (Naoto)

“Woof!” (Puppy)

“Wait just a bit . ” (Naoto)

Naoto pet the back of the puppy’s head, and then opened the refrigerator in the kitchen .
The puppy followed Naoto, staying by his legs, wagging its tail and going pitter-patter .

“You can eat fish, right?” (Naoto)

“Woof!”

He took out the remainder of the salmon, and started cooking it in the frying pan .
After he finished cooking it, he took out the bones, put it on a plate, and gave it to the puppy .

“Eat up . ” (Naoto)

After watching the puppy happily eat the fish, Naoto returned to the kotatsu .
There, he saw Sofia still watching the natto .

“Hmm? What’s wrong, Sofia? Not eating?” (Naoto)

“Ah, ah…” (Sofia)

“You still don’t know how to eat natto, huh . Try the white rice over there . ” (Naoto)

“Y-you can eat the white thing?” (Sofia)

“Ah, is it faster for me to show it?” (Naoto)

Naoto thought so, and stirred his natto before putting it on the white rice .
He then put it into his mouth .
The bitterness of the natto and the sweetness of the rice went together perfectly in his mouth .

“Mmmm-“ (Naoto)

Unintentionally, he let out his impressions .

“Like I thought, breakfast is a must in the morning! I haven’t eaten like this in years!” (Naoto)

Even though the taste was a little weird, tears of joy went down his face .
He took a bite of salmon . The greasier it is, the more the sweetness and saltiness come out .
He slurped the miso soup . The miso paste settled into the daikon radish and sank into the body .
Naoto hadn’t had a decent meal like this in several years . When he smacked his lips, the puppy came to him wagging its tail .

“Woof woof!” (Dog)

“What’s wrong puppy, nothing more to eat?” (Naoto)
“Woof!” (Dog)

“You still want to eat more? No choice then, but just a little, okay?” (Naoto)

Naoto split some of his own salmon with his chopsticks, and gave it to the puppy on the palm of his hand .
The puppy was so happy that it ate directly out of his hand .
Seeing the puppy eat so vigorously, Naoto also relaxed a little .

“Woof!” (Dog)

“Nope, the rest is mine . ” (Naoto)

“Kuu-n” (Dog)

“I’ll make it again for lunch . ” (Naoto)

“Woof!” (Dog)

He pet the dog’s head and then looked back .

“Hmm? You’re doing it again . ” (Naoto)

“This thing… This smelly thing…” (Sofia)

“Oh, you don’t like natto?” (Naoto)

After looking at it for a while, Sofia looked back up at Naoto, and gave him the natto with a sad face .

“I’m sorry Naoto, this-“ (Sofia)

“It’s fine . Actually, it’s my fault . I took out the natto without thinking . In my hometown, it’s not a food anyone’s picky about . ” (Naoto)

“I-is that so?” (Sofia)

“Yeah . That’s why I’m sorry . ” (Naoto)

Naoto took the natto from her, and Sofia looked relieved .
While smiling, Naoto gave the natto to the puppy .

“Puppy, can you eat this? Natto’s full of minerals . ” (Naoto)

“Woof!” (Dog)

Naoto gave it to the dog who was wagging its tail .
The puppy was overjoyed, and started eating the natto without caring it was sticking to its face .

“Eh?” (Sofia)

Looking at it, Sofia was surprised .

“I-it’s eating it…” (Sofia)

“Dogs actually like natto a lot . Don’t give it the ones made with soy sauce or onions because those are poisonous . People don’t like the smell, but dogs do . ” (Naoto)

“Why didn’t you say that earlier?!” (Sofia)

“Eh?” (Naoto)

“If you said that, I would have given it to the dog . ” (Sofia)

“Oh yeah, that would have worked too…” (Naoto)

“Ah, whatever! I can’t give it the natto now, but I can give it these vegetables-“ (Sofia)

“Aah, pickles are high in salt, so you can’t give that to the dog . ” (Noato)

“What? Then this soup-“ (Sofia)

“Miso soup is also salty . ” (Naoto)

“Then, this fish-“ (Sofia)

“Sorry, that one’s made for humans, so it’s salted . I’ve already given it my own part too . ” (Naoto)

“Then, this white-” (Sofia)

“Grains wouldn’t be good, dogs eat meat, after all . ” (Naoto)

“Then what can I feed it?!” (Sofia)

“Are you that determined to feed it…?” (Naoto) [4]

With tears of envy, Sofia stared at Naoto . He couldn’t find any words to say back to her .

Author note(?) – “It’s peaceful today in the RV, too . ”

Onion: By the end of this, I started spelling Naoto as Natto… If I did it and didn’t realize, I’m sorry… This chapter was easier to translate, length-wise, but a lot of new vocabulary relating to food . On another note, I’m trying to figure out how to translate Naoto’s speaking style . I know he’s more modern, but it’s much harder to translate than the uptight Sofia . I’ll get used to it, I guess .

Also, when the heck is the puppy getting a name?

Right, so . Real life stuff . I’m changing computers soon, and so… maybe translation will be on a break . I’ll try to get ones done for the next two weeks, but we’ll see .

TL Notes:

[1] Ichiju-sansai, it’s like a typical placesetting for j.a.panese meals .
[2] You know . Typical blessing before eating, like “bon appet.i.t” or something .
[3] The actual proverb/idiom doesn’t make sense in English, so yeah . It was originally like, “‘isn’t even suitable to die’ in the j.a.panese-style room” .
[4] It was between this and “Is it really okay for her to try to feed it?” You guys can choose which sounds better .
