1409  Sigils

The first abyssal spirit to emerge was a gray giant that looked humanoid. It blocked their path and tried to kill the crab that was giving Arthur a ride, making the latter quite enraged. "It looks… strange," Tiara said with a frown. "Like a beast that has lost its mind. I don't feel the same aura I feel from other spirits around here." "I'm not familiar with the rules, but the abyssal spirits refused to abide by the rule of the Spirit Sovereign," Arthur explained while watching the giant chase after them. "It must have lost all rationality after being corrupted in the realms below, or it's simply bitter." "How should we handle it?" "I can test out these," Arthur said as he raised his chains. "The last time I was here, they were a little different. It seems like the evolved versions of what they used to be." "I don't think I have any offensive powers," Tiara muttered with a frown as she aimed a green ethereal hand toward the giant. After a moment of unbroken focus, she sighed and lowered her arm. "Nothing." "We can find out more later," Arthur said as he summoned one of his chains. The abyssal spirit showed no signs of fear despite his overbearing spiritual energy. It rushed toward them with rageful stomps as it flailed its arms. "An inferior spirit for sure…" Arthur muttered as his chain whipped out, rushing toward the incoming spirit. They tore apart the spirit, which howled with rage, its voice a mixture of mana and spiritual energy. The chains proved destructive in their clash against the spirit. They destroyed the spirit the moment they clashed, letting it disintegrate into a hand-sized sigil floating midair. Arthur and Tiara stared at each other before approaching the sigil. "What is this?" asked Arthur. "What was that?" asked Tiara, shifting the conversation elsewhere. "I didn't know they were that powerful! It sounds unfair that all I got was flight." "You didn't think it was unfair while mocking me earlier," Arthur said while rolling his nonexistent eyes. "This sigil seems to contain some sort of power inside it. Is this what seekers use to grow stronger?" "Should I try it?" asked Tiara. "I was the one to kill it." "You need even more strength than that?" Tiara questioned, making Arthur a little ashamed. "Don't be stingy!" "Just go ahead and use it," Arthur said with a wave of his hand, not expecting her to be this persistent. Tiara let out a snicker before grabbing the sigil, which exploded with light and entered her body. "And?" Arthur asked when he noticed a lack of reaction. "I feel… full," Tiara said with a scared tone. "Like a balloon about to—" Tiara couldn't finish her words before her green body began expanding and sending Arthur flying away. He staggered several steps before stabilizing himself enough to see what happened. Tiara indeed ballooned up to become a replica of the earlier giant, only green. "What is happening to me?" asked Tiara, her voice deeper now like she had shifted entirely. "Why do I look like this?" "You look like… a giant bald man," Arthur said as he attempted to hold back his laughter. "It seems you took the shape – or ability – of the spirit that we defeated. Can you do anything different?" "…I just feel different," Tiara said in a gruff voice as she looked at him still m.u.f.fling back his laughs. "Don't laugh at me!" "I'm sorry," Arthur tried to calm down. "Can you go back to normal?" "…I would, if I could!" she snapped at him. "I can still float, but I can't undo what happened. I didn't think this is what would happen." "I'm sure it's temporary," Arthur said with a grin as he sat on his crab with leisure. "We just need to wait." Tiara looked anxious as she waited. After a while, she began acting like she was a giant cloud floating around the forest. After almost fifteen minutes, Tiara returned to her normal size and heaved a sigh of relief. "Never doing that again…" the princess said. "I think it's the opposite," Arthur said with a grin. "These spirits give the sigils that let you use their abilities for a short while. It can be quite handy when facing stronger spirits. However, I don't know how to keep the sigils without using them instantly." "Maybe it's related to the Soulbinds?" Tiara asked. "Quite likely," Arthur said before he tapped on the crab. "We have no more time to waste. Let's reach the green mountain. I hope that spirit has some information about Diana and the rest." Tiara nodded in agreement and continued on with their journey. More abyssal spirits appeared, and Arthur did a few more experiments. For some strange reason, the sigils didn't work on him, only on Tiara. They just disappeared into his body and did nothing. After a while, the princess grew brave again to try the sigils and began fighting abyssal spirits using the abilities she obtained. There was an elemental fire, gravitational force, and even water splashes. The sigils were endless, and some didn't have obvious functions like making Tiara stronger or faster. Arthur began to notice that there was a pattern for the sigils and their functions. Although their shapes varied, their colors determined their functions. Green sigils affected the seeker himself, while red sigils gave him fighting abilities like firing things. Yellow sigils allowed the seeker to control the environment around him, while blue sigils allowed the seeker to summon a miniature spirit similar to the defeated one. Arthur didn't know if there were more types of sigils, but he did test out a hypothesis which proved correct. Tiara absorbed a green sigil which made her stretch her body as desired, and Arthur used his black flame on her. The sigil lost its function and disappeared.

"That explains why you can't absorb the sigils," Tiara noted as she reached out with her arm and failed to make it longer. "You are a walking anti-sigils."
