"Don't misunderstand! That's Sheng's name on my phone! He isn't my lover or anything it's a joke, from high school, okay?" Lu AnLing said frantically.
Seeing how she spoke and how crazy her face looked Kang Jun couldn't help but laugh.
His heart was still heavy from what Chong Feng had told him but that was all in the past. Lu AnLing never loved his brother, she had only loved one man before him and that was Yang Yize. However, for some reason, his heart still hurt when he thought of how, in some alternate future, his brother could have been by the girl's side instead of him.
Kang Jun could never beat his brother at anything. The man was a wonder kid, the type everyone liked not only because he was intelligent and kind but also because he was just an overall people person. Kang Jun, on the other hand, was cold and liked to be by himself. His only saving grace was his intelligence and tactical capabilities.
Suddenly, a strange feeling began to emerge from deep within Kang Jun. It made him feel a bit cruel because for a second, he was glad his brother wasn't around but the thought wasn't completely true to the man's heart.
It wasn't that he was glad his brother was dead. What he really wished was that he had met the girl first...
But nothing can change the past.
Seeing as Kang Jun's handsome features began to show signs of unhappiness, Lu AnLing looked at him with a face full of worry.
She touched his face softly and said, "You don't look too okay either… did something happen?"
Looking at her, Kang Jun smiled and then he grabbed his phone and he flipped the camera before he handed it to her.
Lu AnLing was confused but once she saw her face on the phone screen the girl yelped before she held her breath and became ghostly pale.
"Don't look!" She screamed as she hid herself under a pillow.
Kang Jun laughed some more before he pulled the pillow off of her face.
"You've missed 19 calls from your friend. You should probably call him back." Kang Jun said with a chuckle.
Lu AnLing shook her head. "I'm not in the mood."
Kang Jun: "Why not? Did something happen?"
Kang Jun knew something had happened and he could just about guess what it was about but he wouldn't stop asking until she told him herself.
Lu AnLing gazed at Kang Jun sadly and then she looked down. "Granny wants me to divorce you."
Kang Jun's face twisted. "Why?"
"Because she hates you..." now Lu AnLing began to sob.
"Why? Did I do something to her?" Kang Jun asked seriously. The man had done bad things in his past so he was a bit reluctant to ask such a question, but what he feared the most was if the old woman knew that Kang Zhi had slept with the drunken Lu AnLing.
To anyone, it would seem like the man had taken advantage of her and because of this, Kang Jun could understand anyone's distaste for both his older brother and his whole family, let alone himself.
Lu AnLing shook her head no. "I don't think she's ever met you. All she knows is your name…"
"Okay... then why does she hate me?" Kang Jun said with genuine curiosity.
Lu AnLing did not know what to say.
Since young, she'd been surrounded by people who either didn't believe in happy relationships and marriage, like her father and then, when she came into the Lu House, people who believed relationships were a way to increase one's status but unlike everyone else, Grandma Lu wasn't like this.
The old woman truly believed in relationships based off of love but also those where both parties should treat each other well and where there are no big problems.
It was true that after what had happened with Yang Yize, Lu AnLing didn't want to marry but after she had met with Kang Jun everything seemed to change.
The relationship she now had with Kang Jun was the type of relationship her grandmother wanted for her but just because Kang Jun's surname was Kang, the old woman refused to accept him?
Lu AnLing found this ridiculous.
"I'll talk to her." Kang Jun said.
Lu AnLing's heart dropped. "No, please don't. I don't want anything bad to happen."
"What would happen? Don't worry. I won't be mean. Trust me."
Lu AnLing didn't know what to say. She didn't want to deny him anything but she didn't want to put him in a position where he would have to deal with her grandmother's verbal abuse. "If you meet her, I want to be there…"
Kang Jun reached for Lu AnLing's face and then he kissed her gently. When he pulled away he said, "Fine. We will speak to her together."
Suddenly, Kang Jun felt his heart tightened, and he spoke without thinking, "I love you. I won't ever let go of you, so we'll make this work. I promise."
Hearing this, Lu AnLing was a.s.sured. She hugged the man until she fell asleep in his arms. Holding her, as she slept, Kang Jun watched as Lu AnLing's chest rose and fell and how she clutched onto him like a small child. He smiled sweetly at the woman and kissed her lips one last time before he pried her hands off of him.
He tucked the girl into bed, and then he walked out of the room.
Kang Jun headed to his study and then he took a seat. He sat silently with his head in his hands thinking over the information that he had gotten that day.
As he thought, Kang Jun suddenly got a call from the manager of Hotel Helios.
Hotel Manager: "We've finally been able to retrieved the footage you wanted, do you want to pick it up or should I send it over to your residence?"
"I'll come and pick it up." Kang Jun said. He was a much quicker driver than anyone, so he knew that the best way was to go himself.
With that said, Kang Jun headed to Hotel Helios. There he picked up the USB and then headed back home.
By then it was close to daybreak but Kang Jun didn't care. He went straight to his study and began to watch the footage of the Hotel Lounge where Lu AnLing had said that she had been drinking before she accompanied a man up to her room.
He fast forwarded as he watched and watched and watched every single bit of footage until his eyes were red and his head began to hurt, up until he finally saw Lu AnLing's figure hunched over a seat at the bar.
He watched her as tears fell from her eyes and as she drank her sorrows away in a great many different drinks. The girl didn't seem to care what she was drinking and strangely, the beverages kept coming despite her not ordering a thing.
Kang Jun frowned.
If only he had met her back then, or maybe even before. He wished he could go back in time and wipe her tears and show her the love she so truly deserved.
He wished so hard but he knew this was something that would never come true. A person could only impact the future, not change the past.
Kang Jun knew this quite well…
Kang Jun sighed and then he pushed those negative thoughts out of his mind before he concentrated on the screen once more.
He saw as Lu AnLing wiped her eyes with her palms and how many people pa.s.sed her by. After looking at her for a second, the people sneered and then they walked away but Lu AnLing was so concerned about her own unhappiness that she gave no thought to anyone else in the room.
Then, just as it seemed like Lu AnLing was about to leave she b.u.mped into a tall man.
The man was…
Himself?
