"You can put me down now Darick." He informed his brother and cursed when he was hastily dropped to the mud ground like a sack of potatoes.
Darick groaned as he rolled his shoulders back and stretched his arms to stir feeling back into them.
He had been sprinting along the poppy fields and into the dense moist forest of Alaeg where majestic pine trees grew at heights as tall as a hill.
Moonlight streamed weakly through gaps to draw out outlines and shapes of rock crops scattered along beds of ferns with their pointy fronds reaching for the light.
A mellow breeze stirred an astringent floral odour and musk about their noses.
Stillness and quiet hung around their sober mood and mourning. Both brothers sat on a rock crop with dampened spirits and confusion to what befell their home.

Corin prayed that his father and Avarack were able to escape the nighstalkers attack. He cursed himself for not being able to fight with them. If only he hadn't called upon the Rushkillzen, they would still be together.
Darick cursed bitterly at the fact that his eighteenth year and coming of age would be a reminder of the loss of his home. His thoughts wandered to Corin's unique power. He didn't blame Corin for evoking the Rushkillzen, but he wouldn't be honest with himself if he didn't find his big brother's power frightening.
"What's this I see? Two grown men brooding on a rock. A strange sight to behold." A silk-smooth voice sailed into their ears.
It made Darick sit upright and stare about the darkness for the voice's location.
"Darick." Corin sighed when he saw his baby brother stand and turn his head about to lock onto the voice.
The way before them was amorphous forest. Movement and sound dropped to an absolute stillness.
Darick yelped when he felt rope wrap around his waist and yank him forward into darkness.
He found himself facing an effeminate beauty of a man.
The man's features were highlighted by the soft delicate fairy light dancing about his sparkling round green eyes, full ruby lips, slender jawline and the soft pointy tips of his elf-like ears holding back fine gold strands of hair that tumbled about his slender shoulders and neck.
"Luca." Darick's voice quivered as he said the beauty's name.
"I know," Luca whispered as he replaced the rope around Darick's waist with his arms.
Darick relaxed into the man's hold and received his lover's pa.s.sionate kiss, his hands naturally teased the places that would make Luca moan with pleasure.
"Darick!" Corin's voice frantically broke through the thicket to reach Darick's ears.
Darick hastily pulled away to stand (innocently) next to Luca just before Corin discovered them.
Luca sparked a torch that showed more of his tall and toned body.
He was wearing the standard full dark-green leather body armour of a Seriph, which drew out his curvaceous hips, long legs in knee-high lace-up boots. Black belts holding small daggers and other steel hand weapons were wrapped around his thighs and boot shafts. His black double belt supported a sheathed short sword and a pouch. The belt's silver buckle was an emblem of a crane with its wings extended. Both of his ears were studded with the same silver crane emblem.
The crane was the mark belonging to Order of the Seriph who were a race of human fairies with elven blood. Specialists in airborne magic, stealth and swordplay they were.
Luca's silver earrings and belt identified him as a member of the order's royal family.
"Lord Luca de Seriph." Corin greeted the man with a stoney voice.
"I'm touched you're always happy to see me Lord Corin of Lochlea." Luca sarcastically acknowledged Corin.
"Not in the mood for your frivolous talk. We need to greet your king."
"About Lochlea being razed to the ground by the Vorn." Luca answered to Corin's directness. "I was sent to escort you to The Regia."
Corin and Darick followed Luca's lead for the heart of Alaeg Forest.
