Chapter 8: Treasure Hunt — Are there any macarons?
When Ye Zhen Zhen woke up from her nap, the sunshine outside the window was no longer as bright as it was at noon.
She grabbed her phone from atop her pillow and glanced at it. It was already 5:00PM. She had found this cell phone in her room. It already had several contacts inside, but apart from Qin Kong, she didn’t recognize a single one.
After saving Officer Zuo’s number on it, Ye Zhen Zhen set it to speed dial before placing the phone back.
If I had known earlier, I should have asked Dr. Ji for his phone number. At least I would have been able to call him now and ask him if he had eaten yet.
“Miss, dinner has been prepared. Would you like to eat now?” After knocking twice on the door, housekeeper Zhou’s voice rang out from behind the door.
“Sure.” Ye Zhen Zhen opened the door and glanced towards the staircase. “Can I eat in my room?”
Housekeeper Zhou nodded. “Previously, you and Master would eat together in the dining room. Now that Master has pa.s.sed away, if you don’t want to see Madam Sun and the others, I can deliver your food to your room.”
“Thank you.” Not being required to eat with Sun Qian and the others, Ye Zhen Zhen sighed in obvious relief. Can I even make them return to their own homes?
She watched as Housekeeper Zhou came in with a serving tray and set it down on the desk. “Housekeeper Zhou, who is the owner of this mansion?”
Housekeeper Zhou said, “Originally, it was Master, but now, he has set aside this house for you. The lawyer responsible for settling the estate is currently abroad, so the will has yet to be processed.”
Ye Zhen Zhen nodded, silently looking at housekeeper Zhou. This person was very calm, and her work was absolutely meticulous. She easily gained the trust of those around her. In addition, she seemed to know everything.
Everything that Ye Zhen Zhen knew involving the Ye Family had been gleaned from her. Her clear understanding of her grandfather’s will distribution, however, was somewhat strange.
“Take your time eating, Miss. I will come back later to clean up.” Housekeeper Zhou bowed and then withdrew from her room.
This kind of deferential manner always made Ye Zhen Zhen feel as if she was living in a hotel.
Furthermore, it felt like a five-star hotel’s presidential suite.
Dinner was significantly more exquisite than lunch. There was even steamed egg, which also had a little caviar on top. Ye Zhen Zhen tasted it. Its rich flavor met the standards of a five-star hotel. Housekeeper Zhou’s timing was unusually accurate. Just as Ye Zhen Zhen set down her chopsticks, she knocked on the door and entered to collect the tableware. She even remembered to remind Ye Zhen Zhen to take her medicine.
Ye Zhen Zhen set her alarm to the time the nurse had told her so she wouldn’t forget to take her medicine. Otherwise, Dr. Ji would get angry at her next doctor’s appointment.
Walking a circuit around her room, Ye Zhen Zhen opened her armoire again. She discovered that her previous self really loved princess-style clothing. Even the winter coats were all sweet candy colors. Upon seeing this, she was in the mood for&nb

Somewhat frustrated, she closed the armoire door and continued to look around her room like an explorer. The first armoire drawer she opened rewarded her with a photo alb.u.m.
A photo alb.u.m could be described as something that bore the weight of a person’s memory. As far as the amnesiac Ye Zhen Zhen was concerned, this was simply rain after a long drought.
She opened the photo alb.u.m somewhat impatiently. The first page was a family photo of three.
The girl in the photo was roughly 14 to 15 and had her hair arranged in a cute bun. She was wearing a small red qipao with delicate plum blossoms embroidered on it. The woman behind her was also wearing a qipao, her black hair falling behind her back and her gentle temperament identical to that of a wealthy lady. Standing beside the woman was a man attired in a white suit and gold-rimmed gla.s.ses on his face. He looked like a scholar with a wide range of knowledge.
Ye Zhen Zhen stared blankly at the photo for a long time. Was this her dad and mom? They looked so young, yet their lives had been s.n.a.t.c.hed away in an accident. She bit her lip, holding back the tears pooling in her eyes.
She gazed at the girl in the center of the photograph. Her lips were drawn back in a happy smile, and, even though her countenance still possessed the innocence of childhood, she could still recognize that this girl was herself.
Ye Zhen Zhen exhaled and continued to flip through the alb.u.m. The photos within the alb.u.m were arranged in sequential order, and there were even neatly written annotations in the margins noting the time and place. It was written in beautiful calligraphy, so unlike her own handwriting. She surmised that it was her mother who had written the captions.
The little girl in the photos gradually grew up. She saw her crying, saw her laughing, and saw her follow her parents through countless cities until she was 15, when her parents no longer appeared in the photos anymore.
After she was 15, the photos lessened significantly. At that time, the girl who had been in the car crash, who had lost her parents as well as her memories, was no longer smiling in her photos. This lasted until she entered university, where her eyes finally no longer appeared sad.
Ye Zhen Zhen’s heart felt suffocated. The person in the photos really was her, but a continual strangeness plagued her.
Her alarm suddenly rang out. Ye Zhen Zhen immediately put down the photo alb.u.m and went to turn off her alarm. Ye Zhen Zhen picked up her packet of medicine and consumed her dosage according to Dr. Ji’s instructions.
Slightly bitter; the urge to eat macarons grew stronger.
She sat on the sofa and stared blankly into s.p.a.ce for a while. Suddenly, she picked up the phone and looked through the phone book. Although there were a lot of contacts, there were only three numbers on the phone call history.
One of them was Qin Kong, and the most recent phone call was on March 12th, the day before the murder. Ye Zhen Zhen read through the history. All the phone calls between her and Qin Kong were initiated by Qin Kong and lasted no longer than five minutes.
It seemed that their relationship was truly nothing great.
Another person was listed as Pei Cui Cui. Just from reading the name, she a.s.sumed that it was a girl. The most recent call was March 14th, but the call had not been answered.
The final one was Zhou Wen. This phone call was very long, nearly twenty minutes in length. She had called this person half a month ago.
Ye Zhen Zhen wrinkled her brows. Who were Pei Cui Cui and Zhou Wen? University cla.s.smates perhaps? But from what she had seen in the photographs, it was very hard for her to imagine herself in university, let alone actually having friends.
She once again skimmed through the phone call history with those three lonely numbers. She thought, Mn, seems as if I had no friends.
She once again pressed open her SMS records, but unfortunately, all her texts had been deleted. She found nothing important from this.
She set down her cell phone and walked over to rummage through the armoire, returning the photo alb.u.m back to its original position as well. Ye Zhen Zhen opened the final drawer.
Within it were many paintings. Some were of flowers and plants, while others were shading practice sketches.
She was slightly stunned. She used to be able to draw? But these paintings, why were they tossed into the bottom drawer?
Her heart slightly suspicious, she decided to wait until tomorrow morning to ask housekeeper Zhou.
Ye Zhen Zhen started feeling sleepy when it was almost 9:00PM. She went to wash her face and brush her teeth before changing into sapphire-blue pajamas and lying down on her huge pink bed.
She picked up her cell phone and wrote a note on every Monday and Thursday. The day after tomorrow, she could go to the hospital to seek out Dr. Ji for another appointment.
Even though not even a day had pa.s.sed, she realized that she was already beginning to miss Dr. Ji.
What clothes should she wear to the doctor’s visit the day after tomorrow?
Ye Zhen Zhen fell asleep to these thoughts. In her dreams, she dreamt about carrying several boxes of macarons as she went to visit Dr. Ji.
She originally believed that she would definitely suffer from insomnia the first night she returned to Ye Mansion, but she didn’t expect her sleep to be completely smooth and steady——all thanks to the blessing of Dr. Ji and macarons.
Ye Zhen Zhen’s room had excellent lighting. When she woke up from the chirping of birds the next morning, she opened her eyes to the sight of sunlight sprinkling through her window.
Her mood bright and cheerful, she got out of bed and went to wash her face and brush her teeth. Afterward, she moved the paintings back to the drawer. She thought for a moment before deciding to go downstairs to eat breakfast.
When she opened the door, housekeeper Zhou was already standing outside waiting, frightening her to the point where she nearly didn’t call out.
Housekeeper Zhou didn’t react, only deferentially saying, “I came to invite Miss to breakfast.”
Ye Zhen Zhen patted her chest, still slightly unsettled and frightened. “Okay, I’ll go downstairs to eat.”
Housekeeper Zhou didn’t say anything else and turned around to head over to the staircase. When Ye Zhen Zhen walked into the dining room, Sun Qian and Ye Kang Ping were already sitting inside, dressed as if they were prepared to head out.
“Good morning, Zhen Zhen.” Sun Qian caught sight of Ye Zhen Zhen and smiled at her. Ye Kang Ping nodded towards her.
“Morning uncle, morning auntie.” Ye Zhen Zhen pulled out a chair across from them and sat down. Housekeeper Zhou walked up to her and inquired, “Miss, what fruit juice would you like to drink at breakfast?”
“Eh, orange juice?” She felt that this was quite common, plus the two sitting across from her were also drinking orange juice. She didn’t want to inconvenience housekeeper Zhou by having her press other fruits.
“Okay.” Housekeeper Zhou left the room and then quickly returned with breakfast and fruit juice. Sun Qian watched the person across from her silently eat and beamed, saying, “Zhen Zhen, did you sleep well last night?”
Ye Zhen Zhen said, “Okay.”
Sun Qian asked another question. “How come I didn’t see you come downstairs to eat dinner?”
“Oh, I was feeling a little ill, so I ate in my room.”
“Feeling ill?” Sun Qian’s expression immediately changed, as if she was staring at a large adversary. “Do I need to call Dr. Zhang to come over and take a look?”
Ye Zhen Zhen shook his head. “No need; tomorrow is the day of my doctor’s appointment. I can just go to the hospital and seek out Dr. Ji.”
Ye Kang Ping looked disapprovingly at her. “Why on earth are you going to the hospital when we have a family doctor?”
“It’s fine, Anyway, if I stay at home, I’ll have nothing to do.” Ye Zhen Zhen suddenly seemed to recall something after she said this. “Oh, that’s right. I haven’t gone to school in a long time. This term’s course credit hours might not be enough.”
Ye Kang Ping and Sun Qian’s complexions changed simultaneously upon hearing this. Ye Kang Ping signaled Sun Qian with his eyes, and Sun Qian promptly plastered a smile on her face as she looked at Ye Zhen Zhen. “It’s okay. We asked the college to give you leave. Look at you, you just left the hospital; you should wait and let your body heal a bit more before going back to college, okay?”
Ye Zhen Zhen nodded, not arguing. She had only said this with the intention of sounding them out anyway.
To the side, Ye Kang Ping finished eating and used a napkin to wipe the corners of his mouth before standing up. “Zhen Zhen, your aunt and I are going on a trip to the company today. You won’t be afraid staying home alone, right?”
Ye Zhen Zhen shook her head. Sun Qian patted her shoulders and said, “Then rest well at home.”
Seeing the two of them leave in a car from the entrance of the Ye Mansion, Ye Zhen Zhen forked a small piece of ham into her mouth. She glanced at housekeeper Zhou, who was standing behind her. “Housekeeper Zhou, I found several paintings in my room, were all those my paintings?”
Housekeeper Zhou nodded. “Yes, the Madam used to invite a specialist to teach you to draw.”
“Oh, then why haven’t I continued painting? I found those paintings tucked away in my drawer.”
Housekeeper Zhou said, “After the car crash six years ago, you haven’t even picked up a painting brush. You also became quieter afterwards.”
Ye Zhen Zhen thought for a moment. In other words, after she lost her memory the first time, she hadn’t painted ever again.
She had originally wanted to ask housekeeper Zhou about Pei Cui Cui and Zhou Wen, but she decided to let it be.
“I ate my fill. I’m going to go upstairs first.” She stood up from her chair and headed towards the stairs. Two steps later, however, she suddenly turned her head back to look at housekeeper Zhou. “Are there any macarons?”
Even though she was asked such an abrupt question, housekeeper Zhou was still calm and collected. “If Miss wants to eat it, then I can make it.”
Ye Zhen Zhen was slightly in awe. “You can also make macarons?”
Housekeeper Zhou nodded. “I previously studied a bit of Western-style pastry.”
“Oh.” Ye Zhen Zhen thought, As a housekeeper, making Western-style pastries is probably an essential technical skill. “Then can you help me make a few for tomorrow? I want to bring some to the hospital.”
“Yes.” Housekeeper Zhou deferentially agreed. She bowed her head and tidied up the tableware once more.
After Ye Zhen Zhen returned to her room, she took out her old paintings and studied them for quite a while. Afterwards, she concluded——her paintings were very good!
Dong. Dong.
Two knocks sounded from her door. Ye Zhen Zhen immediately walked towards her door and opened it.
Standing outside the door was an unfamiliar woman. She more or less appeared to be the same height as her, but this woman’s style of dress was significantly more mature. Light makeup had been applied to her face. Ye Zhen Zhen gazed at her for a moment before she compromised and asked, “I’m sorry, may I ask who you are?”
The eyes of the woman standing across from her darkened before she smiled and said, “I am Zhou Wen.”
