=Evans, Marian=, "George Eliot." 1820-1880. Novelist and poet. A complete list of her works comprises translations of Strauss's Life of Jesus and Feuerbach's Essence of Christianity; the novels, Scenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede, Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda; the long poems, Spanish Gypsy, Agatha, Legend of Jubal, and How Lisa Loved the King, with a few short ones; and a vol. of essays, ent.i.tled Impressions of Theophrastus Such. The strength of her novels lies in their wonderful delineations of character, their subtle a.n.a.lysis of motive as acted on by circ.u.mstance, and the lofty wisdom that infuses the whole. They awaken the best impulses of humanity, and appeal to all the finer sympathies. Her style is strongly marked, often picturesque, and her descriptions clear and distinct. Her poems, though containing many beautiful pa.s.sages, do not, with one or two exceptions, take a high rank. =Farquhar [far'kwar or far'kar], George.= 1678-1707. Irish dramatist.
