— To think it's been two years. — The man next to me says. — Right on his birthday, Chloe.
I look at him.
— Really, I think this is the best gift I've ever gotten-speaking of not being able to contain my smile.
Today I'm seventeen years old and I've been an adventurer for two. A person is considered an adult at the age of fifteen, after which they can be registered with the guild.
Today I'm at a party with my party friends.
— And to think that we would move to rank D soon today. Let's drink! — Maria screams at his side.
Joe looked at Maria and let out a little sigh. We're both great friends, we even became adventurers on the same day, although he was kind of a force to become for me, yet nowadays he seems to be enjoying it.
His skin is dark, light brown eyes and dark hair, plus a great physique and a meter and eighty high. I have a little crush on him, but that's kind of a secret. We fought in the vanguard together, he is our tank.
— You'll end up collapsing fast like this — I'll tell Maria.
She's my best friend, I wanted to be as beautiful as she is. She's redheaded and has beautiful green eyes that look like jades, her skin is almost white, freckles spread all over her face, which doesn't make her ugly at all. She's a little bit shorter than me, maybe something around five feet tall, actually the difference between us is very little.
She is our priest, she became adventurous by running away from an arranged marriage, yes, a n.o.blewoman.
— I've just met you, but I'm happy to be a part of it — says a low voice behind us.
Kay had arrived.
— Now you're one of us, don't worry about these things — I say by giving him a drink.
Kay is the newcomer to our group, he joined just over a month ago, as we needed to balance our group more. He's an archer.
His appearance is not bad either. A little taller than me, light brown hair and eyes just a little darker, he has a slender body.
Stopping to think, most of our group looks good.
— A toast to my dear friend Chloe! — Maria screams, raising a mug.
Beer is thrown everywhere.
That night we drank as much as we could.

— It would be great if this war ended soon, right? — I talk looking at my left side.
There was Mary, we both sat in the corner of the bar. We were alone, Kay had pa.s.sed out from drinking so much, so Joe took him to our room at the inn.
— From what I heard a village far from here came into conflict. — Maria was swinging her beer in her cup. — Directly against the vampire kingdom.
— The vampires are really scary — I speak with a little chill. — They say that they can hit the demons head-on, these two races together is unjust.
We both sigh in unison.
— It is at these times that a hero should be born... — Mary says low. — Besides, the tension between the Kingdom and the Empire is growing.
In the human continent there are three great forces. The Kingdom, a place rich in magic where great magicians appear, the Empire, a force that rivals the Kingdom itself, even though it does not have a great magical power, all this is due to its soldiers, the Coalition also exists, but they have distant relations with the other two.
Maybe if Kingdom and Empire joined... It would be the only way for us to hit head-on with the demonic army, but they prefer to stay apart. What are these idiotic politicians doing?
— I'm afraid... — I speak by turning my attention to my friend. — What if the adventurers are summoned?
— It's likely to happen, given everything that's going on. — Mary puts her hand on mine. — But should it happen, we will be together.
I hadn't even noticed, just the idea of the summons was enough for me to start shaking, but with her holding my hand I can calm down a bit. The war is moving me more than I thought.
— You're my best friend. — She says smiling. — I consider you much more than my own sister, I will protect you no matter what the cost.
She showed great determination in her tone of voice, it wasn't something you usually hear from priests, so I end up dropping a slight laugh.
— I should be saying that, after all, I'm the vanguard.
After that we both laughed for a while. Mary asked for more booze with the excuse that today we should just keep celebrating, it's no time for sadness. I couldn't agree with her more.
~A month later.
We are now in a small town, one of the few ports on this side of the continent, since there was no trade with the demonic continent.
A week ago here was the stage for a big battlefield, we were not fighting, but we could feel the battle in the air. Marks of battles everywhere, houses and fields burned, many bodies could be seen, mostly human.
— As explained earlier to you. — A man in great armor spoke. — If we leave the bodies here we will have diseases being spread. Today we adventurers will take care of it.
The man speaking was the leader of the raid, the one designated by the leader of the guild as the chief adventurer. Unfortunately our group knew him well, we were from neighboring cities, his fame, different from his appearance, is not good.
Our work was simple. The vampires retreated some time ago, our soldiers would finally have a little rest, this has already happened several times, small times of peace between various conflicts. In this time we must remove the bodies, thus avoiding outbreaks of disease in future battles.
— We really are on the front line — I speak as I watch the whole scenario.
I am immersed in thoughts, looking at all that destruction, but I come back to myself when someone touches my shoulder.
— Come with me for a moment. — The one next to me was Mary.
I was guided behind a house that had been destroyed. Mary looked around to make sure we were alone. I don't think it's strange, they've happened before, probably something to do with her n.o.bility.
— I'm thinking of running away from here. — She speaks by turning her attention to me.
I ended up being surprised by her words.
— Run away? What do you mean? — I ask a little louder than I should.
Noticing my tone below my voice. Does she really have any idea what might happen to us if someone finds out about us?
— You know the problem with my family. — Her voice was even lower. If we keep going around here, I'll end up being found.
She was right, unlike normal adventurers the high rank ones know n.o.bles. It may just be a matter of time, maybe they already know she's here.
— You're right — I'm talking about the possibilities. — But if the four of us were to run away... it would be extremely difficult not to get caught.
Listening to me, Mary makes a strange expression. Stopping to think for a while she didn't talk about the other two, she's just talking about it with me.
— You want to leave the two behind... — The words end up going out on their own.
— Chloe, I'm not going to ask you to escape with me. — She starts talking softly, but makes her voice firmer. — Of course it would be my wish, but that would be very selfish on my part. If you want to come with me, I'll be waiting in the forest near the city exit, they left at seven in the morning.
We remained silent for a brief moment, none knew what to say next, but we decided to go back and start working, staying there too long would raise suspicions.
— Finally they decided to help? — says Joe as we approach him.
— Shut up and help me — I'm talking about going toward a house.
I don't know if I can thank you, but thanks to the work we were doing I didn't have to worry about the conversation I had with Mary, there was no time for that.
The scene was horrifying, entire families dead, soldiers completely torn apart, scenes that we were forced to see, even by looking away we could not escape, after all, the chance of something similar being in this other place was great.
I can't remember exactly how many times I threw up, I was having my first contact with the war, I had seen people killed by bears, something that happens when you are an adventurer, but that was different.
— There are civilians here, children...
— Are you all right? — Someone is talking behind me.
Your sudden appearance frightens me, it was lost in my thoughts again.
— No, I do not think I will sleep for a few months. — I can speak after the air has recovered. — And you?
— There's no way to look good in this place — he says sitting next to me.
We were just in the hour of rest, some groups were divided, I stayed together with Kay. We spent some quiet time, we both knew what we thought, the best at the moment seemed to be silence.
— Actually, I'm thinking of doing something. — He takes a short break, as if he were thinking about it. — I'm probably going crazy.
— What?
After another long pause he talks.
— I'm thinking of enlisting. — He looks at me with conviction. — I want to be a soldier.
— You what?
