"Alpha team. Calling Alpha team… do you copy? Over." Ethan said into a walkie-talkie as he communicated with the other people that had to monitor the festival.
"You don't have to say over…" Owen said calling him back.
"What was that? What don't I have to say? Over."
"Kill yourself… OVER!" Owen shouted down his walkie-talkie forgetting he was on the same frequency as some of the teachers.
"I'm telling you something will go wrong," Ethan said as he switched over to his phone to communicate with Owen after they both received a warning from the teachers.
"Didn't Sean and Lily say they would help?"
"They said they'd be available after the first two hours. We still have 30 minutes till opening so I'd expected you to do your last-minute checks."
"Yeah yeah," Owen said having a rest from all the zero checks he had been doing. "It'll all be fine."
"It better be!" Ethan shouted down the mic. "My future stands on this. I promised to make the best festival in the history of festivals. If this fails then it's all my thought. The rope around my neck is already tied and ready to be hung when I fail."
"Dude," Owen said. "calm down. It's not the end of the world. It'll be fine."
"You know what you are doing tomorrow right?" Ethan asked.
"I do… I have the performance… I understand… I only had 2 days to practise and as soon as I see her I'm going to complain a s.h.i.t ton to her for picking an impossible piece but it's all good."
"Good..." Ethan replied certain that it wasn't going to work out.
Ethan ran around the festival as he looked down from the fenced roof at all the people who were about to enter. The main gate was flooded with parents and their kids who were excited to roam around the school and enjoy the three days they had prepared. It was an event that would not only earn the school a lot of money but also a good reputation, and if Ethan didn't make a profit, he would end up beating himself up.
BREEEEEET BOOM BOOM
The sound of a whistle was shortly followed by confetti cannons at the front gate. The gate slowly opened and the visitors charged in greeted by the students who were in the eye of the storm, handing out maps and helping those that needed it.
"Look like it's begun," Owen said as he was finishing up his final checks in the drama department, only to restart the checks several minutes later, as per Ethan's instructions.

"Right… so… Owen checks then… he is on a break here… I can check here… they'll message me if something is wrong… I can just wait for that… if there are any issues with the booths they'll call."
Ethan sat on top of the roof with the wind blowing trying to blow the papers he clamped down on. His mind calculating every possible action that could happen at the festival. Rea.s.suring himself by saying that if anything would go wrong it would be on day 2 or 3.
"What are you doing up here?" Sean said bursting through the door.
"I should ask you that," Ethan said. "Only the festival committee are allowed up here."
"No one will care. I'll be gone soon."
They both looked at each other waiting for the other person to speak. Sean stood looking at Ethan who was only curious as to why Sean had appeared.
"What are you doing?" Ethan asked.
"Oh, right! Kaylee told me to find you."
"Oh, dear. What's wrong with the drama department?? Owen should have checked that out…"
"It's nothing like that," Sean said. "She said that you shouldn't get stressed and relax a bit."
"Right?"
As the sun bloomed brightly over Ethan and Sean the wind didn't die down. With the perfect combination of cloudless sky and wind, it was the best time of the year to host the festival. Despite most of the booths being inside, there was some outside to help balance the flow of people so they wouldn't crowd the school. And from Ethan's advantage point above the school, it seemed as if everything was working to his plan. He couldn't really see the smiles but he could hear the sound of cheering and parents being dragged along. The sight of the younger years from other schools bringing their girlfriends seemed to annoy Ethan slightly, creating a colder wind in the air.
"I'm going back inside," Ethan said with a bad feeling in his stomach.
"See too many cute couples?" Sean said hitting it right on the head.
"Forget about me. Why aren't you with Lily?"
"She has her booth for all three days…" Sean said trying not to be disappointed. "So I'm just going around with my mother and brother."
"Right," Ethan said leaving. "Have fun."
The day progressed smoothly with the only trouble being Owen's problem to fix. Although Ethan continuously panicked about everything and roamed the halls of the school checking up on every cla.s.s every 10 minutes, he dealt with zero problems.
"You lost your mummy?" Owen said to a crying child.
"Uh-huh," they nodded wiping away their tears.
"Don't worry," Owen said with a smile to not give away how inconvenienced he was by the situation in front of him. "I'll take you to someone who will help you find your mummy."
"What did you call me for?" Charley said approaching Owen from behind.
"Here you go…" Owen said throwing the child onto Charley who attached to her as if she was their parents. "I still have to do checks and you are now on lost child duty…"
"d.a.m.n you," She said under her breath. "I'll get you back for this…"
"Hey, Owen." Ethan approached just as Charley left with the child. "Doesn't it feel suspicious to you?"
"Don't say that. This isn't some novel. Nothing bad will happen."
"Nothing bad happens on the first day," Ethan said. "If something bad will happen it will be tomorrow or Friday."
"Listen!" Owen said getting annoyed and realizing that this is how he may sound to others. "Don't worry about it,"
"But murphy's law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."
"I'll make something go wrong if you don't leave," Owen said resisting to punch Ethan in the crowded area they were standing in.
"All right all right," Ethan said. "Just get back to check if everything is ok."
The first day of the festival ended as Owen said. There were no issues except for a large number of kids that got separated from their parents. Not surprisingly, Owen encountered each and every one of these and called Charley each time to fix the mess. She answered his call each time, forgetting that he was going to force her to do something. The day ended as the sun hid behind the school. Ethan and the rest of the festival committee had to stay back and do a bit of cleaning in the hallways, before locking up the cla.s.srooms and waiting for the second day to begin.
