"Sailor, go get Joshua."
The soldier saluted and ran off. After a while, he came back with a burly man.
He had broad shoulders and chest, though he wasn't particularly good looking, he wasn't ugly either. A well-built muscular man with a gruff beard and black hair. He had some gray in his beard and was greying at the temples. He had tanned skin and wore a pretty large falchion on his side.
Joshua saw Annixon standing next to the Captain, "Ah, the savior of the ship. I would love to have a friendly bout with you one day."
Annixon laughed at the comment. So he was one of those, "I would love to do that one day, but not today. I need your experience in the water. This here is called a snorkel."
He made rudimentary strap around the base pipe of the snorkel and wrapped it around Joshua's head, "Now it won't come off."
He grabbed a rope and tied it around Joshua. Joshua in the other hand was fidgeting with the snorkel.
Annixon noticed this, "You take this piece and place it in your mouth. Close your nose and try and breathe through the pipe. It will be slightly disconcerting when you are in the water at first, so keep that in mind. Hence I want to prepare you guys beforehand. Alright, now we need to test it in water. It is possible that water might seep through. Just use your own breath to blast the water out the pipe."
Joshua kept nodding the whole time. He then went to the ship's edge and jumped in the water. He did exactly as he was told, and submerged himself. He made the attempt to breathe getting a mouthful of the taste of tar as well, but it worked. He remained under the water until Annixon pulled him out with the rope.
When Joshua got back on the ship Annixon asked, "Well? How was it?"
"Other than the nasty tar fumes, it worked perfectly. It's a pretty ingenious device with the limited Items we got here. Holy c.r.a.p."
"I wanted to create a visor, but I needed something transparent and robust. So, that isn't going to happen while we are on a ship, but all in due time."
Annixon removed the rope from Joshua, "Is it fine if I place Joshua in command of training the other nine. I need to make nine more of these."

Duval nodded, "It fine. I will just oversee and see if thing is going smoothly. I will tell you if something went awry."
Annixon nodded in acknowledgment, "You guys continue the training while I make more snorkels. In the meantime. Captain, I need you to lay ten pieces of rope connected to the ship on either side of the main deck. I will explain the plan in due time."
He walked over to the remaining wood and gathered them, also grabbing the tar and hammer, "Sailor, I will need some leather, probably a lot of it. Get me about five large pieces. Bring them to my bunk."
The sailor nodded and ran off. He went towards where the girls were. They could be useful in helping him making these items he needed.
He came to a halt right in front of his room, where the girls were. He heard giggling from the other side. Annixon smiled and shook his head, and unlocked the door.
Anastacia was the first to speak up, "Is it lunchtime already?"
Annixon gave her a look of derision, "It been barely half an hour. You would be so lucky. You will help me make a few things because I do not know when they will strike. So I need to be prepared as fast as possible."
All three the girls nodded. He set off and made a small box with the wood, which he waterproofed by covering the insides with tar, then covering it with a tar-covered cloth. Then he took some leather and covered the entirety of the box. Then he made a lid that he followed the same procedures with.
Then he made another tar-covered pouch to go over everything. He wanted to make sure that the device was watertight.
They sat there most of the day and making these items. They didn't complain. They at least had something to do.
The following day, Annixon made his way to the captain's quarters. He unlocked the door and locked it behind him. Making sure that the quiet girl saw him lock the door. He even went as far as showing her the key and then pocketing it.
The girl froze. Real fear started to creep up on her. The only words she could utter was, "Please leave."
"No, I told you yesterday. You had better be ready to talk. I am very interested in why you became like this. The antisocial Pariah."
She shook her head.
Annixon took out his blade, "So be it."
He went to her and placed the blade on her chest, "What would you do if I suddenly decide to down with this blade?"
The girl shivered. Her eyes wide with fear, "What do you want?"
"First of all. Let's start with a name. I never did get your name. My name is Annixon Bright. My parents thought it would be funny to have a surname called Bright."
A slight smile appeared on her face, then almost immediately went away, "My name is Amara Marigold."
Annixon smiled, "Ah, she speaks. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I am a d.i.c.k. My methodologies are considered insane, even by my previous peers. I have a tendency to help people even if it means making an enemy of myself."
He patted her head and picked up a book. He quickly read a chapter, "Humour, comedy. The type of stuff I actually enjoy. I see that you do too. Why don't you tell me about it?"
The conversation went off on a one-sided tangent when she finally started speaking about the books. They spoke for hours. It was the first time that Amara felt comfortable in a man's presence other than her dad. A few hours later he stood up, "I am sorry, Young Amara. I need to go, but I promise I will be back tomorrow"
Annixon left the room. She was slightly sad to see him leave.
