At first, she had just grabbed his arm but he had maneuvered her hand into his, without her really noticing until he had already done so. Little things like this gave her heart a twinge of sweetness deep inside.
She snuck a glance up at him, her heart beating fast. He was not really looking at her as he just pulled her along with him. But he looked so calm, and sure of himself… it made her feel grounded just seeing that resolutely dependable look.
Then he did actually glance at her out of the corner of his eye, with a slight grin coming to his face. "Not even gonna ask where we're going?"
She shrugged, "Would you tell me if I did?"
"Maybe." A laugh bubbled out of him, as he rustled her hair with his free hand. Blushing, Vixen let him, falling silent from the embarra.s.sed happiness that filled her. A few moments later, he spoke again, "Its not far."
She did not answer, instead she just stepped closer to him and pressed herself against his side, causing him to almost stumble at the added difficulty to walking. But he adjusted, and did not really seem to mind. At least if that warm smile was anything to go by.
A few moments of this pa.s.sed, before she heard his voice over her head, "We're here."
She looked around. He had taken her to a wooded area near the city. They were currently in a flower filled glade that had sunlight filtering down rather prettily into it. It was rather beautiful… but she was a bit confused, "Why did you bring me here?"
"I wanted to show you one of my favorite spots." He stepped away from her, not even looking at her anymore. "This is where I tend to go when I just want to be alone. And I wanted to share it with you…"
Vixen felt a little flattered. "Really? Are you trying to give me a way to always be able to find you?" She grinned at him.
"Not exactly." Now he was looking at her. He came over and stood right next to her, and reached for her hands. She let him clasp them, not quite knowing what he was doing.
But she kept quiet as he raised her hands and kissed them softly. While he did so he never broke eye contact with her. Vixen knew her cheeks were now blazing. The action had been so simple and yet… it messed with her heart so much.
"I wanted to bring you here years ago…" Lowks took just a tiny step even closer to her. "But you were a little young then for me to actually ask this. Perhaps it's better I didn't – you didn't see me as a man then."
Vixen had no idea what he was talking about, "Uh…Lowks-?"
"Hush. Let me finish." He shook his head at her, before returning to his previous stance. "I've wanted to say this for years. But you needed me to be something else for you then, so I kept quiet. But now… I have this opportunity and I will take it. I love you, my dear friend. I've loved you since we were children. And yes, I've been irked with you a bit over the years, but I've never stopped loving you. I don't care if you don't really feel quite the same, you seem to like me well enough. So, Vixen dear, will you please agree to marry me?"
"Weren't we already engaged?" Vixen blinked up at him, her head was reeling a bit from his straightforward words. He loved her since they were children!? Was he serious?
"Not quite." He sighed, rolling his eyes, "Courting. I hadn't asked, so.."
"Oh." She looked at his impatient expression as he waited on her to answer, and sighed, "Of course I'll marry you."
He smiled, and then removed his hands from hers, looking faintly relieved. "Wonderful." He faintly breathed the word and then sat down.
Vixen noticed that he had slipped a ring on her finger and smiled to herself. She dropped beside him and reached for his hand, "Uh, Lowks? I wanted to say… um, I do love you as well you know." She was not going to admit how long that she had as she was pretty sure he might actually blow up at her if she did.
He leaned over and kissed her warmly, and then smiled at her, "I… good. That's good."
She giggled and leaned against him. She was much more happy about his confession than about his actual proposal. She had already been thinking of them as being engaged so… there was nor much of a difference for her.
