Alfred hesitated before nodding. Aella knew Josephine would want to head out early, and it was already pretty late. They really should get some rest, and take advantage of being well rested to travel farther tomorrow, but she wanted to get the wall activated as soon as possible. As soon as the wall was up, then she could send her father to deal with any monsters or human troops on her side of the wall, and it wouldn't matter if there were still spies in her court.
Teleporting to just outside the crystal room, they started walking. It wasn't very long before they found a destroyed door. Glancing at each other, they picked through the rubble to see a wall carved with runes. Someone had broken large chunks of it with a hammer.
"We don't have a prayer of putting this back together," sighed Aella, picking up one of the pieces to see the rune glimmer.
"Why not? It's just like a puzzle. Unless they bothered to take pieces away, we just have to put them back together," said Alfred, looking around at the rubble. "See? Here's the hammer they used."
Aella watched him pull the heavy hammer out from under a few pieces of wood from the door. Frowning she nodded. "You're right. Let's see…"
For the next two hours they cleared away all of the debris from the door and began organizing the broken chunks of wall.
"Even if we can't understand the runes themselves, we can line up the pieces of rock," said Alfred, setting a piece in the lowest spot. It fit perfectly.
"But I do understand the runes," she said, putting a second piece in place. "This one here says 'beginning'. This rune is the beginning of the spell. And this one over here is part of the rune that specifies 'conditions', which probably goes with what Bridgette had said about there being conditions to who can pa.s.s through the wall, or how it reacts to each person."
"How did you learn to read ancient runes? Even the leaders of the church struggle to read it," said Alfred, looking at her curiously.
"My dad taught me when I was little. He would draw them on a slate with chalk, then erase them once I could name them. I'm not sure how he learned them, now that you mention it."
"You should ask him when you see him again," suggested Alfred.
"I don't know," she said, placing another stone in place. This was going much faster than she expected.
"Why not? I thought you weren't afraid of anything?" he asked, giving her a look.
She didn't answer, trying to think of a suitable response.
"Not jumping to defend yourself? Wow, I'm shocked. Is it possible I actually found a weakness of the great and mighty Demon King?"
Giving him a small smile, she said, "Hey, don't joke like that. I know your history with the past Demon King."
"Ooh! You wound me! Whatever shall I do?" he cried, grabbing his chest and pretending to fall dramatically to the ground.
Laughing, she shook her head. "It's complicated. My dad's the reason I managed to become the king, yet there's so much I don't know. And… I don't know if I can trust him."
"Oh? Why's that?" asked Alfred, getting up off the ground, and placing another stone in place.
She took it out and turned it over before putting it back. "Remember how he found the communication device Brian used to contact the church?"
"Yeah, he had one he was using to contact your court with, so he had two after that. What of it?"
"When we were talking, I could hear it was active. Someone was listening on the other side to everything we said. I can't believe he didn't notice, which meant he did it on purpose."
"He would know you were the Hero of Air, right? Why would he risk you discovering him, unless he meant for you to know? Maybe he was trying to give you a heads up on something?"
She froze as he put in another piece. That hadn't occurred to her. If he knew she might hear, then he might not be a spy, but trying to tell her something. But what?
"Um, Aella? I think you have the last piece," said Alfred.
Looking down at the rune in her hand, she saw it was 'activation'. Placing it in the last hole, the entire wall began to glow, and pulse. The magic circle that would create the wall, was ready for the crystal fuel that would power it.
"It works!" cheered Alfred, jumping up in delight. "Let's grab a crystal and get it going!"
"I'll do it," she said, brushing the dust off her hands. "Make sure no one comes to break it while I'm gone."
Teleporting to the crystal room, she carefully chose a piece of one, that looked like it would fit the waiting hole, and tapped it gently with her black dagger. The pulse of magic that was released when it cracked off threw her back against the opposite wall. Groaning in pain, she rolled to her side and tried to get back up. The world was spinning, and she felt queasy. What had she eaten that would make her sick like this? The last time she felt like this was when that one demon kid snuck up behind her and smacked her in the head. It took her three days to get back on her feet. Luckily, no one bothered her in that time.
Aella climbed to her feet and took huge breaths to steady her pounding head. Touching the back of her head, she could feel blood. Activating the healing ring, she suddenly felt much better. Her vision cleared up, and her mind no longer felt like it was full of cotton.
"Wow, that's weird," she said, teleporting back to Alfred with the crystal.
"Are you alright?" he asked, eyeing her. "I thought I heard you cry out?"
"There's a wrong way to break these things," she said, holding up the chunk of crystal.
Alfred's eyes widened. "I never thought you would try and break one! Are you alright? Those things are horribly dangerous!"
"What do you mean?" she asked, pausing with the crystal almost in the hole. "How else do you think I was going to get one?"
"I don't know, but you should never break one of those things! It releases intense magic! Anyone with the ability to detect magic would have felt it. Not to mention, it can kill someone who can't handle the magic!"
"Alfred, it's done and I'm fine!" she said, putting a hand on her hip.
He marched up behind her and felt the back of her head. "Then why is the back of your head covered in blood? It hasn't even started to dry yet! Aella!"
"Okay, I was hurt, but I'm fine now," she argued, turning back to the wall.
Sliding the crystal into the hole, they both stepped back and watched as the runes and lines began to solidify. All of the cracks and bits missing, that were too small to dig out of the rubble and dust, filled in and began to glow a bright light. After only a moment, the glow faded and they both watched as the runes began to slowly spin. The crystal disappeared, and a timer started, floating in the air before them.
"It's done," whispered Aella.
"There will be a wall until the timer runs out, or you deactivate it. Can you tell me what the time is? I don't read runes."
"I think it says 365 years," she whispered in awe.
"Then I guess you have plenty of time to fix up your kingdom," he laughed. "Let's go see it!"
She nodded, and teleported the two of them to the window she had crawled out of to go to the Spell Spire. They could see a glow in the distance, but it was too far to see the wall from there.
"You said the wall was going to cut the training grounds in half? I wonder who got stuck on which side. We should go there before checking on Josephine's daughter."

"I was thinking of that. Remember how it took us a really long time to get to the training grounds?" she asked, grabbing his hand and teleporting to the map room.
"Yea?" he said, confused.
"I flew with Frederick earlier, and we were able to travel much faster than the horses could."
"Well, obviously. You didn't have the back and forth of the road, or the up and down of the hills. Not to mention the rivers and lakes we had to go around."
"But if you tell me where the tower that has Josephine's daughter, I could fly there, figure out where to teleport everyone, and cut down on the travel time," explained Aella.
"That's a good idea. The tower should be right about here, on this map. I like this map, it's more complete than the one the church has."
"Let's get some sleep, before the sun starts to rise. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day!"
