"Your Majesty!" bowed the general as she arrived at his door. He had been waiting for her.
"You needed to speak with me before I left, General?" she said, glancing around the room quickly. Both of the communication boxes were on the table behind him, against the back wall.
"I spoke briefly with the Hero of Light about what your current plans were, and I was hoping you could clarify my orders?"
"You are to remain here, in case any other monsters arrive from in the mountains, until I decide to move you south. Now that the portal has been secured and nullified, I see no further attacks coming, unless the Church catches wind that I have secured the Hero of Earth from them and sends someone else who is capable."
"And where will you be going?" he asked, looking at her.
"I have business that I must attend to that is cla.s.sified. Is there anything else?" she asked, giving him a look that said it was none of his business.
"It is good to see you and know that you are doing alright," he said in that soft gravely voice she remembered from so long ago. Her insides almost melted, but her will to survive flared up.
"It was good to see you again. I thought you were dead all these years, and that was why you didn't come rescue me," she said, before turning to the door. "Goodbye, father."
Alfred was waiting for her just outside his door, so she grabbed him and teleported without another word, to the clearing they had left Josephine and Curt.
"Did you have to be so cold to your father?" he asked, looking puzzled as she let go of him and stepped back.
"What did you tell him we were going to be doing?" she asked quickly, ignoring his question.
"I told him we were meeting back up with Josephine and Curt, to handle some things."
"Did you specifically use their names?" she asked, her eyes narrowing.
"No, I just said the other heroes, why? Is something wrong? Should we not trust your father?" he asked, getting slightly alarmed over the way she was acting.
"I don't trust anyone," she said, turning in the direction the others had headed. "Let's go, we've wasted enough time and I have to go back at dusk to check up on things at the palace."
He nodded and they headed off. She could tell that he was unsettled about something, but didn't take the time to talk about it. The church probably already knew that they had taken Brian away from the portal, and time was against them. There was no telling what they would find when they reached the training fields for the heroes.
They found Josephine and Curt hiding in some bushes, about an hour later. Alfred had some way of spotting them that she didn't bother to question. Ahead of them, there was a group of men milling about a small building on the side of a road. One thing Aella found interesting, was that the human lands had far more roads than the demon lands did. More of her lands were dedicated to farmland, and not crisscrossed with so many roads.
"They have someone trapped in the building. We've been watching and expecting them to burn it down with the person inside, but so far they haven't done that," explained Josephine softly.
"Why would they do that?" asked Aella, confused.
"It will either force the person out, or kill them, depending on what the men want to happen to them," explained Curt.
"Do you know who it is?" asked Alfred, craning his neck to see a little more clearly.
"We didn't get a good look, but it kind of looked like Rose with her son, Felix," said Josephine.
"Why would she be all the way out here? Felix was about to head to the next level of training," said Alfred.
"She had told me about a year ago that she didn't like the way they were training her son," said Josephine.
"The boy's been trained since he was 2. She's had plenty of time to do something about it," said Curt, looking confused.
"No," corrected Alfred with a sad shake of his head. "If the boy has been identified as a hero-possible, then she wouldn't have any say in his training at all. They don't ever risk losing a hero, if they can help it. Though, there have been exceptions," he ended with a growl.
"Another time," said Aella, ending their banter. "Let's rescue the two then decide on our next course. How many of those men can you take out, Alfred?"
"All of them. They're only men." He gave her a perplexed look of incredulity.
"Then do it, so we can get moving. There's only 3 or 4 hours before dusk."
Josephine and Curt looked at each other as Alfred nodded and disappeared. They watched as he cut all of the men down faster than any of them could react. Some of them were only hurt, instead of dead, but they weren't going far, as they were missing legs and arms. Without some serious healing magic, they would all be dead soon.
"Is there a reason you seem to be in such a hurry?" asked Josephine as they all stood up to join Alfred just outside the small building. She was looking over the injured men as they walked, in case she needed to try and save any of them, but Alfred obviously didn't mean for her to save any, because Josephine kept walking.
The door of the building opened a crack, and a woman peeked out at them.
"It's alright now, Rose. You can come out," said Alfred.
"Alfred? What are you doing here?" asked the woman, opening the door wider and stepping out with a boy who looked about 9 or 10. "I thought you were supposed to be killing the Demon King!"
"I got a little distracted with a job that's more important," he said, glancing back at Josephine and then Aella, before turning back to them.
Aella was staring at the boy. He looked so familiar! He had dark skin, and black hair, with the darkest chocolate eyes she had ever seen. Nothing like the woman that claimed to be his mother.
"If the leaders of the church find out, you'll all be in a lot of trouble! What happened to Robert?" she asked, looking at each of them, and landing on Aella.
"He forfeited his life," growled Alfred, ending that line of questioning immediately. "What are you doing here with Felix?"
"They were going to move him to the southern training fields. I wasn't going to be allowed to go, as they felt I was mothering him too much."
"So, you tried running with him? That doesn't seem like you, Rose!" exclaimed Josephine, crossing her arms.
"I know his odds if he leaves my side, and they aren't good." Rose glared at Josephine, wrapping her arms around her son. "Just because they took you away from your daughter doesn't mean you can judge me!"
Alfred stepped up into her face, making Rose step back, but he stepped up again. "You will apologize to the Hero of Water, woman!"
Rose's face seemed to fall, and she turned her face to the side. "I apologize, Hero of Water. I meant no insult. I apologize, Hero of Light."

Their words seemed almost scripted, as if it was something the Church had fostered in them, and it intrigued Aella.
"Your apology has been noted, woman," said Josephine coldly.
"Your apology has been noted, woman," said Alfred, stepping back and giving her room.
"Is that boy really your son?" asked Aella, as the tension seemed to soar.
Not knowing who Aella was, Rose chose to vent her frustration on her. "Who are you to question me? Who this boy is, is none of your business!"
"No, she's not my mother, Hero of Air," said the boy softly. "I greet you, Hero of Air. May your days be plentiful and blessed."
Everyone gaped at the boy.
"I do not know the words to accept your greeting, but know that I accept it and thank you," said Aella, bowing her head slightly.
"Hero of Air? But how?" stammered Rose, taking another step back.
"I was captured by the demons, who did not know who I was. It is a secret, my ident.i.ty, that I do not wish to be shared," said Aella, glaring at the woman.
"I…I apologize, Hero of Air!" Rose managed to say, ducking her head.
Having heard the other's responses, Aella knew what the woman was waiting for her to say, but Aella wasn't from the Church, and certainly had no interest in quoting its rituals.
"Good, now tell me about the boy."
Shocked by her words, Rose struggled to respond.
"Rose is the boy's guardian, and has raised him since he was born. The boy's mother, who died when he was only a few months old, was named Janice," said Alfred, looking at Aella with a raised eyebrow.
