"Georgia is makin' her move," Nick guessed.

"So it's not you," Knight replied.

"No it's not me," Nick bit out. "I made that move you think I'd do it without tellin' you?"

"I hoped not. Good to know I hoped right."

Nick couldn't let that annoy him. He had more important things on his mind.

"Olivia was called to the warehouse this morning. She left, went home and in between she is not taking my calls or returning my texts. Your sources who gave you all that s.h.i.t, they say anything about my girl?"

"No word breathed about Olivia or Georgia or any of the Shade crew, outside Vincent."

"You know, Knight," Nick said.

Knight knew. And what he knew was that Olivia was there when that s.h.i.t went down. She was a witness to her father shooting Drake Nair. A witness that didn't come forward. Murder covered up, that made her an accomplice.

She was vulnerable.

"Not a word, Nick. Nothin' about Olivia," Knight a.s.sured him.

"Sylvie and Creed findin' anything for me with the Feds?"

"Nothin'. All clear. So fishy it smells bad, it's so clear. This includes them not seein' any link from the Feds to the Shades. Georgia picked a solid crew, none of them are stupid, none of them are f.u.c.kups. Not like the dad. It's a new dawn for the House of Shade. She played the long game and cleaned up along the way. Though, she tied s.h.i.t tight, Sylvie and Creed have heard Valenzuela is not pleased with Georgia's recent activities. He was amusing himself with her, thinking she was a joke like her father. Her getting her feet under her, he's not amused anymore."

"s.h.i.t, s.h.i.t, f.u.c.k," Nick muttered.

"s.h.i.t's hot, brother," Knight told him something he knew but he did it quietly.

"I don't know what's goin' down, I just know whatever goes down from here on out might need to be fast, Knight. Lightning speed. You got my back on that?" Nick asked.

"Don't p.i.s.s me off with stupid questions," Knight answered.

Nick drew in a breath and let it go, parking in the first spot he found close to Olivia's house, a parallel job one door down.

"I'm at her pad, gotta go."

"You need me, I'm here and I'll put out the alert in case we need to break a sound barrier."

Nick wanted to be amused.

He was too worried to be amused.

"Gotcha. Thanks."

"It's gonna be okay, Nick. If it isn't right now, we'll make it that way," Knight told him as Nick knifed out of his car.

That felt good. Having Knight at his back, that felt good.

But he didn't have a good feeling about this. Liv knew he wanted her communicating. He reached out, she knew to reach back. Her non-response was more than a little troubling.

"Thanks, brother, I'll check in soon."

"Right. Later."

They disconnected and Nick tore his eyes from Liv's house when he heard his name called.

He looked to the car where Jed was sitting across the street.

"Stay or go?" Jed called his question.

"Stay," Nick called back. "And get another man here. Eyes everywhere. Anyone approaches this house, they're stopped and I'm notified."

Jed nodded and closed his window.

Not giving a s.h.i.t, the jig was up because, with s.h.i.t going down at the House of Shade, he was not going to let Olivia out of his sight, he walked right up to her house.

He tried his key.

It didn't work on the front door.

He rang. He knocked.

She didn't answer.

He turned and looked to Jed who was now leaning against the door outside his car.

Jed pointed at her house with a sharp upward jerk of his chin.

She was in there.

Why didn't she open the G.o.dd.a.m.ned door?

He called her and got voicemail again.

"I'm out front, Liv. Open the f.u.c.kin' door," he growled into the phone.

He disconnected and then he texted that same message to her.

He hit the doorbell.

He knocked.

No answer.

f.u.c.k!

He moved around the side of the house, found a foothold in order to jump the five foot tall fence and prowled to a set of French doors that led to the pool. He tried his key.

His temper cooled considerably when it worked.

He opened the door and moved into her s.p.a.ce.

Then he moved through her s.p.a.ce, going where he thought she'd likely be, the front great room.

She wasn't there.

He called her name.

No answer.

He went back on the move.

She wasn't in her bedroom. She wasn't in any bathrooms.

His temper spiked along with his concern as he instigated a room by room search of the house, repeatedly calling her name.

He found her in her informal family room where she watched television. He'd not seen her in there because the room was dark, the curtains drawn, and she was at the far end of the room.

Having pulled a curtain back, she was standing in it, her back to the door of the room. He almost didn't see her even stepping into the room to look for her.

He felt no relief due to the fact she didn't even twitch when he joined her in the room and she had to have heard him moving around and shouting her f.u.c.king name.

"Jesus, Liv, what the f.u.c.k?" he bit out as he moved to a lamp on a table by the couch and switched it on to light the dim room. "Tweaked as all f.u.c.k, been callin' you-"

She turned.

He stopped dead as rage seared through him.

"Jesus, f.u.c.k," he whispered and took the last distance to her in two long strides.

In that time, she slid out from the curtain, away from the window and away from him.

Nick stopped moving toward her, instead he turned with her movements.

First things first.

"Who did that to your face?" he growled.

"Dad," she answered emotionlessly.

He ignored the smoldering burn of fury.

Again, first things first, take care of his girl.

"You should have somethin' on it. You got frozen peas?" he asked.

"It's perfectly fine."

He stared at her.

It was not fine. The corner of her left eye was blood red with burst blood vessels, her temple purpled angrily, the cheekbone under swelling and shoving up the bottom of her eye.

With some effort, he controlled his anger and ordered, "Come here. I want a better look at it."

"Actually, if you don't mind, it'd be helpful if you left."

With those words, her demeanor finally penetrated.

Yeah, Liv not communicating...

Seriously f.u.c.king more than a little troubling.

"Babe-" he began as he started toward her.

"Though, before you go, you should know that they're aware of your desire to have vengeance for your dead girlfriend so you should be careful. Georgia is dealing with a number of things and I'm told it's highly likely she'll also be dealing with that."

And at those words, Nick stopped dead again, his gut twisting and his heart slamming against his ribs.

When she said no more, he whispered, "Livvie-"

She cut him off again. "I'm very sorry that happened. I was unaware of it, of course. Not that, if I was aware, I could have done anything about it. I can imagine that was very painful. If it occurred as I was informed it occurred and it happened with you there to witness it..." She shook her head. "Actually, I can't imagine. But I'm sorry you have that memory."

He moved cautiously toward her.

To his one step, she took two back.

He stopped.

She did too.

"Let me explain," he started quietly.

"I think I already got it," she returned.

"I know you don't," he replied.

"Not that you asked my advice, but although I haven't been told precise details of plans that have been set in motion, I'm getting the firm impression that, regardless that things went at a snail's pace for some time, they'll be moving quickly from here on out. I'm certain you can take care of yourself. But you may wish not to delay in-"

"Livvie," he interrupted.

She shut up and swallowed, taking another step away from him.

"Your father has been arrested for Drake Nair's murder."

For a beat, she gaped at him.

She gathered back her ice and nodded shortly. "As I said, things will be moving quickly from here on out."
