The Gu Wen locals were envious of Da Tian Ting being piggybacked by Feng Kai Ze.
‘Look at that dreamy man,’ the first girl said. ‘He looks like a movie star.’
‘Too bad he has to carry an ordinary woman on his back,’ the second girl said.
‘I wish the woman on his back is me,’ the first girl said.
‘Why don’t you go and ask him to piggyback you?’ the second girl asked.
‘I can only dream,’ the first girl said.
‘Come and eat fresh hot wonton!’ a cart owner promoted.
‘Little monkey, put me down,’ Da Tian Ting said. ‘I want to eat wonton.’
Feng Kai Ze put Da Tian Ting down, and they walked to a table in front of the wonton cart. He remembered he used to walk past the same wonton cart on the way to primary school. Back then he and his mother couldn’t afford even one bowl of wonton. Thinking about how much his mother struggled to support him made him resent his father. His father had cornered his mother to Gu Wen. It was his father’s fault his mother wasn’t alive for him to take care of his mother. He wished his father wasn’t Feng Jia Yong.
Da Tian Ting didn’t notice Feng Kai Ze was lost in his thoughts. She ran to the wonton cart, and smiled at the owner.
‘Boss, two bowls of wontons,’ Da Tian Ting ordered.
‘Coming right up,’ the owner said.
Da Tian Ting sat at the table next to Feng Kai Ze, and the owner carried a tray of wontons to their table.
‘Little monkey, don’t you want to eat?’ Da Tian Ting asked.
‘I’m eating,’ Feng Kai Ze said.
Feng Kai Ze wanted to eat the bowl of wonton heartily.
‘When I was little, my parents brought me here to eat wonton,’ Da Tian Ting said. ‘Sometimes I’ll eat two bowls on my own.’
Da Tian Ting thinking about her mother abandoning her and her father for a rich man made her resented her mother.
‘What’s wrong?’ Feng Kai Ze asked. ‘You were happy a moment ago.’
‘Nothing,’ Da Tian Ting said. ‘Ah… it’s hot.’
‘Be careful,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘If one bowl isn’t enough, I’ll buy you another bowl.’
‘I want to eat it while it’s hot to remember the excitement I felt when I got to eat wonton as a little girl,’ Da Tian Ting said. She held a wonton in front of Feng Kai Ze’s mouth. ‘This is the best wonton in Gu Wen, have a taste.’
Feng Kai Ze didn’t care if Da Tian Ting wasn’t aware of how affectionate she was toward him, because he was happy to be the recipient.
‘Hey,’ Da Tian Ting said. ‘Why aren’t you eating the food I’m feeding you? It’s your privilege to be fed by me.’
‘Yes,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘It’s my privilege to be fed by you.’
Feng Kai Ze opened his mouth wide, and ate the wonton. He thought it was the tastiest wonton he ever ate. He wanted time to freeze in that moment so he and Da Tian Ting would always be together.
‘Little monkey, you lived in Gu Wen too,’ Da Tian Ting said. ‘Do you think the wonton tastes the same as it did when you were a little boy?’
Feng Kai Ze didn’t want to think about his b.a.s.t.a.r.d father.
‘I’m sorry if I said something to upset you,’ Da Tian Ting said.
‘Would you believe me if I told you that I didn’t get to eat one bowl of wonton when I was a little boy?’ Feng Kai Ze asked.
‘I…’ Da Tian Ting said.
Da Tian Ting remembered Feng Kai Ze’s bare lunch box, and believed him.
‘Little monkey, what happened to your family when you were a little boy?’ Da Tian Ting asked.
‘My father abandoned my mother to marry a rich heiress,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘He chased my mother away from the city. At that time my mother was pregnant with me, and she came to Gu Wen to protect me from my father. My mother was malnourished, and her health deteriorated after giving birth to me. My mother worked part-time, because she was scared of my father finding us. She used the money she earned to raise me. We were poor, but my mother loved me.’
Da Tian Ting thought it was insensitive to ask Feng Kai Ze who his father was, and how his father could be that cruel. She didn’t want him to remember his painful past.
‘Little monkey, open wide and eat another wonton,’ Da Tian Ting said.
Feng Kai Ze understood Da Tian Ting was cheering him up. He ate the wonton, put his painful past aside and smiled at her.
‘It’s my turn to feed you,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘Open wide.’
Da Tian Ting ate the wonton Feng Kai Ze fed her, and thought the wonton tasted sweet. She finally understood why lovers went on dates together, because they wanted to share the sweet feeling together.
‘What are you thinking about?’ Feng Kai Ze asked.
‘I’m thinking what it feels like to be in love,’ Da Tian Ting said.
Da Tian Ting felt comfortable to tell Feng Kai Ze anything that was on her mind.
‘If you want to know, you can acknowledge me as your boyfriend,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘You can try me out, and see what it feels to be in love.’
Da Tian Ting stuffed a wonton in Feng Kai Ze’s mouth to stop his sweet talk.
‘Don’t think you can sweet talk me into accepting you as my boyfriend,’ Da Tian Ting said.
Da Tian Ting considered being Feng Kai Ze’s lover, because she liked being with him. She told herself not to worry about the future when he would leave her since he wasn’t going to marry her.
‘Open wide,’ Feng Kai Ze said. ‘I don’t care if you don’t acknowledge me as your boyfriend, because it’s enough that I acknowledge I’m your boyfriend.’
Da Tian Ting and Feng Kai Ze blissfully fed each other, and enjoyed being together.
‘Aren’t you embarra.s.sed to be seen in public with an ugly woman?’ Mac Kai An asked.
Mac Kai An sat down next to Feng Kai Ze. She changed out of her ancient costume, and wore a provocative strapless short dress that exposed her cleavage and smooth legs. Behind her were her two a.s.sistants.
