Chapter 10.1 - Injured by an a.s.sa.s.sin
Lou Qingwu stopped blankly, tilted her head confusedly, “Second gentleman, you …”
Her line of sight seemed to look past Li Jingsheng’s shoulder and to behind him.
Suddenly, she widened her eyes, pushed away the dazed Li Jingsheng and blocked in front of him.
“Second gentleman, be careful!”
At the same time, the subordinate’s shocked cry startled Li Jingsheng awake.
He stopped distractedly before turning around and widening his eyes when he saw the scene in front of him.
He saw a dagger stick out from Lou Qingwu’s chest, the dagger was being wielded by a youth whose eyes were vicious, “Li Jingsheng, return all of the lives of my Tang family!”
“Tang family?”
Li Jingsheng’s face suddenly darkened, muttering those two words before coldly laughing, “Who knew there would still be survivors?”
He yanked forward and pulled the youth by his lapels, in a single move, brandishing him and the youth crashed against the wall like a broken kite.
His head fell forward as he spat out a mouthful of blood.
Just as Li Jingsheng was about to move forward, he suddenly heard Lou Qingwu behind him also spit out a mouthful of blood.
He stopped and when he looked at her again, a dark figure flashed forward to grab the youth and fly out of the courtyard.
Li Jingsheng’s face darkened even more, “Come! Chase after them!”
He called all of the courtyard’s guards over and they immediately chased after the dark figure as well as the youth.
Li Jingsheng took large strides towards Lou Qingwu as he picked her up in his arms.
He looked at her pale white face somewhat helplessly, her face being almost transparent as her breaths became even more unsteady.
It was as if she would die any moment now.
It was the first time had become so anxious but as he lifted his hand, he saw the dagger that was deeply implanted into her chest.
His expression became complicated and disbelievingly said, “You … how could you be so silly?”
In this lifetime, there was actually someone who would take a knife for him?
Unexpectedly …
He fiercely closed his eyes, bending down to cradle her body which started to become cold, “This general will save you! I’ll definitely save you!”
He held her tighter as he turned around and called out to his dumbstruck subordinates, “Hurry up and call a doctor! Hurry!”
“Ah, yes, yes!”
The subordinate finally responded and quickly ran out.
Until now, he still hadn’t really digested everything that had happened.
What Tang family? What Tang family survivors? Did he hear something he shouldn’t have?
The subordinate ran for his life until he saw Li Jingsheng’s grandfather, hurriedly reporting what had happened.
Inside the residence, it was a mess.
Not too far away from the Li residence, a carriage stopped outside.
When someone from outside was rushing to find a doctor, the carriage’s curtain suddenly fell down as the coachman respectfully smiled, “Gentleman, now we really have to leave the town. We’ve already stopped for two days and if we don’t leave now, we won’t make it to the emperor’s birthday banquet. Then the empress dowager will keep reminiscing about gentleman … ah?”
“What happened?” Inside the carriage, a man lowered his eyes and silently looked at the b.l.o.o.d.y mandala flower in his hands.
Listening to the coachman, he lifted his head and his eyes seemed to see beyond the carriage’s curtains.
“Nothing. It seems like someone in the Li residence was injured by an a.s.sa.s.sin. Gentleman, we should leave now.”
The man’s hands that had been rubbing the flower stopped, a peculiar feeling pa.s.sed his heart, “Go find out what happened.”
“Ah?” The coachman stopped for a second but didn’t say anything.
Not long after, he came back, “Gentleman, it turns out that an a.s.sa.s.sin tried to kill General Li but a Miss Lou took a knife for him, unfortunately, it seems like she might not make it …”
The coachman hadn’t finished before he felt the curtain lift up and wind pa.s.sed his ears.
When he finally responded, the carriage was eerily quiet. He slowly lifted up the curtain and sure enough, his master wasn’t there any more.
Unable to restrain himself from muttering and shaking his head, it really was strange.
His master was normally cool headed and cold, why was he so interested in Liyang town’s affairs?
Who knows how much the empress dowager is going to talk about his master following this delay.

TL note:
The author uses "surviving evil" instead of just "survivors" of the Tang family. There's a more specific connotation for the phrase in Chinese, mostly referring to like the people left from a previous regime aka people who survived but shouldn't have.
This is also the first time that the Tang family has been introduced (so no need to quickly skim through previous chapters). The author really likes dropping stuff down randomly like this, no info dump either. LQW's second motivation for this stuff is to find out who played a part in the slaughter of the Tang family. Back then, when serious crimes were committed, the emperor could slaughter a whole family, including extended family and servants so that the whole line would be wiped out.
