Residents close to the derailment were alerted and the story goes that many tried to escape the harmful fumes by getting in their cars and driving off. Unfortunately, the chlorine gas saturation level in the area was so high that many vehicles would not start. Families were poisoned sitting in their cars, their lungs burning from the inside out. A total of eight people died and 138 were injured.
The same thing (railroad accident, chlorine gas spill) happened in Graniteville, South Carolina, in 2005. Nine people died and at least 250 were treated for chlorine exposure. Residents in the area were forced to evacuate for two weeks.2 Naturally, there is concern that rail-transported toxic gas could be used in a terror attack. According to a report in USA Today, Navy researchers say an attack on a chemical-carrying train could kill 100,000 people.3 Bottom line: Gas masks are a good idea for a bug-out bag if you can afford them. You can fi nd child-sized gas masks at www.armynavydeals.com and http://approvedgasmasks.com.
What to Tell Your Kids
These preparations will not go unnoticed by your kids-neither will the extra bag you're carrying around in your car.
What you tell your kids depends on their ages and how comfortable you are being honest with them. You don 't want to scare them, perhaps unnecessarily.
On the other hand, kids love being involved in projects. If your kids are anything like my youngest, they'd like a special job helping prepare for a super-secret spy mission that we can't talk much about. It requires him to choose clothes and toys to go in the spy bag on a monthly basis. He also enjoyed picking most of his foods for the three-day spy mission.
Now, he doesn't believe Daddy is really a spy. He just knows we're preparing for something like a spy mission. Pretty mysterious, eh? Pretty fun, too!
The Final Word
You've made it to the end of the book. I hope you found it informative, entertaining, and useful. If you haven't already, start preparing for the worst! I don't think you'll find it overwhelming or scary. In fact, I've found that it's empowering and liberating. It's better than sitting on the couch, doing nothing as you wait for the world to end.
The end of the world as we know it may come next week, or it may not come for decades. But by using the information in this book, you should be better prepared, you should be better positioned to profit in the bad times as well as the good times, and you should be able to save money in the process.
