Nate grabs my face and kisses me holding my head above the water. I gasp and cling to his shoulders, as his mouth moves gently across mine.

"Ewww!" A wave of water hits the side of my face. "Don't kiss!"

I duck from Nate's embrace and swim to Josh instead, then hang onto the inflatable, next to him. He pulls a face. "Nate is allowed to kiss you, but only when I'm not looking. It's gross."

"Don't worry," I whisper. "He won't be getting any kisses from me after throwing me in the pool." Josh giggles. "I'll make some dinner. What would you like?"

He glances at Nate. "I'm not hungry."

"Why? You've been in the pool all afternoon." Josh bites his lip, and I turn to Nate. "Why isn't he hungry?"

"We might've had some ice cream."

"Three ice creams!" pipes up Josh. "And some crisps."

"Three?"

Nate pulls himself back onto the side of the pool. "You were asleep, he wanted one. So did I. They make some great ice cream over here."

I glance around where an empty tub lies on the small, outdoor dining table, next to two bowls and a large empty bag of crisps. I take a deep breath and pull myself onto the edge of the pool next to Nate. This is one battle I'll never win. Nate's childish side has found its outlet in Josh. Filling Josh with ice cream and junk food, constant ganging up on me, and running around the villa fighting is a daily occurrence. Some of this comes from a deeper understanding Nate has of my need to relax and let go; to trust him and believe he's genuine about his desire to be with both Josh and me.

The transformation, which began following Josh's accident and in the weeks before we left for Greece, expands as the days pa.s.s, and as I let go of my caution.

Nate wraps an arm around my shoulders and kisses my nose. "Relax. I was going to get pizza later." Josh cheers and splashes. "And then we're going to teach Josh how to play Monopoly."

"Monopoly? He's five, Nate!"

"You're never too young to learn how to play Monopoly. I'll help Josh and we'll play against you." He stands and holds out a hand; I grab and he pulls me to my feet. "And I bet we'll win."

"Try me." I raise a brow.

"Your mum's very compet.i.tive," he says to Josh.

"What does that mean?"

"She doesn't like to lose."

"I know! She never lets me win Snap."

Nate gasps and shoves me hard; my backside hits the water again. "OhmiG.o.d!" I yell when I resurface.

"We'll sort her out, Josh. Me and you."

Edging to p.i.s.sed off now, I head to the steps and climb out. "I'm making dinner." I grab a towel and yank it around my body before stalking off.

"Sorry!" Nate calls after me, and there's another splash.

I turn back. Nate's in the pool again laughing conspiratorially with Josh and my irritation ebbs. I may've landed myself with another big kid to contend with, but the Nate I found behind his walls is big-hearted, understanding, and in tune. The exact opposite of the man lost in the shadows of his past, struggling to find a way out.

NATE.

I pull myself from the pool and sit on the grey marble edge. Riley's towel-clad figure walks through the double-gla.s.s doors and I watch her for a few moments before glancing back at Josh. He hangs onto the shark toy and splashes in circles singing to himself and, as I shake water from my hair, the bizarre situation I'm in washes over me again.

Yeah, if you'd told me six months ago I'd be holidaying with Riley I'd have laughed. With Riley and a kid I never knew existed? No way in h.e.l.l. But here I am.

Josh's accident freaked me out. I'd never seen Riley helpless and frightened the way she was the afternoon I rushed her to hospital to be with Josh. She stripped my last defences away the minute she looked into my eyes with that fear.

The overwhelming need to protect Riley and fix the situation with Josh shoved away all my earlier dumb thoughts; the ones convincing me I couldn't be what Riley wanted. In that moment, I realised I needed to let go of the denial I used to keep myself safe and stop lying to myself I could ever walk away from her. As Riley's heart broke over Josh, a shock ran through mine too. I felt her pain as readily as my own and that b.l.o.o.d.y confused me - how I could I experience someone else's emotions with that intensity?

Because I love her and understood for the first time exactly what that meant to me. I'd fallen in love with all the parts of Riley that once scared me: her strengths, her pa.s.sions, and her refusal to be treated any less than she deserved. I saw my mirror image girl clearly for the first time - with me and in a shared future.

The love I hold for Riley intensifies each time I experience the same connection, and I tentatively share my emotions with her too. I tell Riley I love her because I think she needs convincing still, but hope I show her more often than I say.

Is this the idea of soulmates? Or one person's neuroses meeting another's and finding peace? I laugh at my attempt to downplay what I have. The answer depends on whether I romanticise what began as b.l.o.o.d.y unromantic, or accept that hidden beneath the layers we've yet to peel away is a need to let go and believe love can be what it is: love. No agendas, no a.n.a.lysis and impossible to avoid or explain.

Just Riley.

RILEY.

The heat dampened my appet.i.te, so I pull out vegetables to make a salad. I'm gathering lettuce and tomatoes into a bowl when Nate appears next to me and grabs a slice of cuc.u.mber. He winks at me as he pushes it into his mouth.

I look out of the open doorway to ensure Josh isn't in the pool anymore; he's standing at the table pouring himself another drink of Fanta. "Josh! Come inside now!"

"I don't want to."

"Come on, dude," calls Nate. "Do what your mum asks."

I shake my head at Nate's smugness as a dutiful Josh appears wrapped in a towel. "Get changed for dinner," I tell Josh.

Josh trudges towards his room, trailing water behind him "You're dripping water on the floor too," I say to Nate.

"Fine." Nate grabs the towel from around me and drops it to the floor, then steps onto it. He takes a lingering look at my wet bikini top and trails a finger from below the strap to my belly b.u.t.ton. I shiver.

"Being stuck with you in Greece in the sun is a d.a.m.n sight better than stuck in the snow."

I pull him towards me by the shorts. "Even though we're not on our own?"

"Even though we're not on our own." He places a kiss beneath my ear. "Because when we are on our own, it's f.u.c.king amazing. Why do you think I spend so much time making sure Josh is worn out and asleep by seven?"

Nate squeezes my a.s.s and bites his lip, eyes shining.

"I thought it was because you liked the excuse to be the big kid you are." I grab his hand as it sneaks inside my bikini briefs.

"Yeah, that too. Now shut up and kiss me."

His lips touch mine, sparking the desire for him as readily as always. He draws me close and I'm enveloped in the strength of his arms, yielding to him the way I do every time now. We lose ourselves together when we connect, as strongly as we pushed each other away in the past. The pa.s.sion and longing hidden for two years still spills out with each night we spend together and I know always will.

Nate. He isn't the man I thought I knew, even when I convinced myself I understood him. The deeper awareness of what created the guy he became, and his fears over intimacy, revealed my own fears and together we work through it all. The insecurity we carry plays off against each other, occasionally in a bad way but most often in a heightened understanding, because we recognise each other in a way n.o.body else can.

This complicated, beautiful man re-discovered a heart big enough to share with both Josh and me; and although some days he struggles, the fact he's honest about this gives hope for the future, one Nate repeatedly says he wants to spend with me.

Whatever this is, and wherever we go, we're Nate and Riley, the names as natural together as they were to everybody before we ever acknowledged this.

More than that, we're us. A little bit messed up, and a lot the same, but anch.o.r.ed together in a determination to conquer ourselves the way we did each other.

Outside the English seaside town of Broadbeach their cars and worlds collide.

Chapter One.

You know that moment when you meet someone, only to discover they're the most arrogant, self-important a.s.shole who you've had the displeasure of colliding fates with? Somewhere, on the edge of my normal life, this just happened to me.

Three hours driving non-stop from Bristol to Broadbeach, and I'm in a c.r.a.ppy mood. This trip would take three hours if every traffic cone in England wasn't blocking the motorway, therefore forcing all the cars into a 'traditional English traffic jam'. Or if I didn't get stuck behind the slowest tractor in the world, after I had the bright idea of leaving the motorway for country roads to speed things up.

I whined when I was dragged to Broadbeach on summer holidays with my parents as a teenager, every time. At that age, the quiet seaside town was the armpit of the universe and no longer the sandy playground by the beach I loved as a little kid. There's no place I'd rather be now, than the small house on the edge of the dunes. When I finally b.l.o.o.d.y get there.

Frustration mounts as the afternoon grows late, and skipping lunch to get away from Bristol as quickly as possible hasn't helped. I took a wrong turn thanks to my stupid decision to take a short cut, and I'm lost on a narrow country lane looking for a road sign. So when a fricking dog runs across the road in front of me, I'm not exactly calm about the car behind rear-ending mine when I hit the brakes. There is one screech of tyres, one exchange of alarmed looks between the black and white dog and me, and one loud metal crunch.

I glance in the rear-view mirror. Some guy in sungla.s.ses hastily puts down his mobile phone and starts gesticulating in a way that demonstrates he's as happy about the collision as I am. Like this, is my fault? I throw open the door and slam it closed. Heading to the back of my small, silver car, I'm aware of his scrutiny as I inspect the damage. Great. There's a broken light and a b.l.o.o.d.y huge dent.

I turn to his. I know nothing about cars but I'm sure this is going to cost him more than me. Sleek, black some-kind-of-p.e.n.i.s-extension prestige vehicles like this costs more to fix than my I-have-no-money-and-a-c.r.a.p-job ten-year-old hatchback.

The guy remains in the car, so I stomp over and indicate he should lower his window. The tinted windows seem a bit excessive in the English climate, but I guess this adds to the image of the car. All I can see of the man is dark sungla.s.ses and spiked brown hair, with his hand waving at me to stand back. I huff and back away.

Out of the car steps a guy with an att.i.tude as big as the dent in my b.u.mper. He doesn't speak, but his body language indicates an apology isn't coming anytime soon. Six feet of tightly drawn muscles and a hard set mouth. I'm immediately drawn to the sleeve of colourful tattoos disappearing under his greying black t-shirt. Why do people get so many tattoos? They're plain ugly when there's so many they merge into one canvas of colour.

I shift my gaze to his face. His sungla.s.ses remain in place, and I can't see much beyond his sharp jawline and the fact he really needs a shave. My first impression is he's trying to cultivate some s.e.xy, edgy image to match his s.e.xy, edgy car. The guy whips off his sungla.s.ses revealing bright blue eyes circled by tired black marks. The looking rough is more than an image then. I figure he's in his twenties like me, but his exact age is difficult to tell beneath the exhausted face.

Without a word, he stalks to the front of his car and rubs the dented paintwork, sucking air through his teeth. Flakes of silver paint from my car drop to the road. I take the opportunity to size him up. He's grungy in an attractive way; or the way attractive people can be as scruffy as h.e.l.l and still look okay. He looks more than okay. I'm momentarily distracted by how his dirty jeans hug his backside but blink the image away.

"It's your fault if you ran up the back of me," I inform him.

"You stopped without any indication!" he retorts, straightening and turning back to me. His accent is odd English but as if he's lived overseas too long and lost part of it.

"A dog ran out in front of me."

He looks into the road. "What dog?"

"The dog's not here now. I don't think the dog realised it needed to be a material witness and ran off!" I narrow my eyes at him and he deliberately looks me up and down. I'm wearing a short floral summer dress. Hardly s.e.xy, but his scrutiny makes me feel exposed. I cross my arms over my chest.

He hesitates, tapping his fingers against his teeth. "I wouldn't normally do this, but I'm in a hurry. Forget the insurance, I'll give you the money. How much do you think it'll cost to fix your car?"

Do what? "I don't know."

c.o.c.king his head, he studies the car. "Not much, I think. It's an old model. Was the paintwork that bad before I hit you?"

Cheeky b.a.s.t.a.r.d. "I'm not taking your money. Repairs might cost more than you have! If you give me your name and number, we can sort the insurance out the proper way."

He laughs. "Very f.u.c.king clever. Do you think I would?"

I'm taken aback at his att.i.tude and language. "Swapping details is a strange and ancient custom which occurs when d.i.c.kheads on mobile phones rear-end the car in front."

For a moment, he looks as if I slapped him across the face, and he's rendered speechless. I mentally clap myself on the back. If he can afford a car like this, I bet people in his life rarely call him a d.i.c.khead. At least not to his face anyway.

"I don't give people my personal details." As he speaks, he scrutinises my face and something in his ocean blue eyes p.r.i.c.kles the back of my neck.

Oh, I see, turn the smouldering on and get me eating out of your hand. Forget that, buddy; men aren't my favourite species currently.

"What makes you so special?" I snap.

A slow smile spreads across his face. "Nothing, what makes you so special?"

He traps me in a well-practiced seductive gaze, accompanied by the grin sharpening his stubbled features.

Not going to work... "Do I have to call the police?"

His brow tugs together and he responds with a sharp. "No. Wait. Okay."

As he turns and goes back to his car, my heart rate picks up. s.h.i.t. Maybe he's a drug dealer. Or has a body in the car. And he's got a gun. And he's going to shoot me. Or maybe I watch too much CSI. Time to leave.

I attempt to memorise his number plate as I jump back into the driver's seat. Jamming the car into gear, I take off as fast as my not very fast car will take me. Through my mirror, I see six feet of muscled, tattooed, blue-eyed hotness (possibly with a gun) watching me drive away.
