Chapter 12 - The plan to use the mountains to improve relationsI got into the bath and a huge amount of water surged out. I see… My body is very large… From that perspective, it makes sense for me to bathe last… I'm glad there was a reason that could satisfy me.
Now then, after I get out of the bath, I'll just put on my pants and go out—but of course, that's not proper; I put on all of my pajamas and go out into the house. I had a feeling that going out wearing only pants would rank very high in the list of things that would make your daughter hate you. Even putting aside my relationship with her, I generally felt that any person probably wouldn't want their father to walk around in only pants. In fact, such a progressive daughter who wanted to see something like that might be worse.
So, I said this to the Angelica, who was just idling in the dining room:
"You should come with your father to the mountains!"
Going to the mountains with your children! There, bonding will naturally occur! Some places might even require a parent's help to traverse! Truly a paradise for deepening relationships!
"Huh? The mountains? Why? That sounds lame."
She turned me down in an incredibly matter-of-course way.
"But mountains are nice! The view is beautiful, the air is fresh, and it cleanses your heart! I'm sure it will become a great memory!"
"We're already in a perfectly fine rural area, the air here isn't dirty at all, the landscapes aren't too bad, and I don't really want to make any memories with the demon lord. Also, don't call yourself my father in the confusion."
This must be what it feels like to be disarmed and rendered utterly powerless. Were youngsters these days all like this? What a spoiled generation.
No, wait, I shouldn't categorize this into "youngsters these days" for my own convenience. That was proof that I wasn't treating her as a unique individual. That kind of behavior leads to being categorized as an "old man" or "elderly" myself.
"Going to the mountains is great, you know. It's the best place for adventurers to hone their skills. Also… um… it's good for dieting."
"That last one is quite a reach. You can lose weight just by walking a lot. Mountains have nothing to do with it."
I had no way to counter her logical argument.
Right when I thought my plan was doomed to fail…
"Goodness~, are you going to the mountains? How nice~"
Laetia entered the dining room!
"It might be fun for the three of us to go hiking as a family. I'm getting excited now too!"
I wanted to let out a hearty cheer upon hearing that Laetia wanted to come along as well, but then it would be harder to warm up to my daughter, so this was a bit troublesome. That said, I should organize a separate sightseeing vacation somewhere.
"Laetia, I'm very sorry about this, but it would be too dangerous for you to accompany us to the mountains. We would be able to manage as demon lord and hero, but, for your personal safety, I cannot allow to come as well."
"Oh, is that so. That's really too bad, but safety first."
Good, I'm glad she was so understanding. Although, if Angelica didn't even want to come in the first place, then it didn't matter…
There is no other choice. I shall appeal to her adventurer spirit.
"Actually, the mountain I wanted to climb is called Mount Blade of Heaven. There is a legend that somewhere near the top, an angel once left a sword there."
I saw Angelica's ears twitch faintly.
"To this day, no one has ever found the sword, but if it's Angelica, the hero who was named after the angels, perhaps it wouldn't be strange if she were the one to find it. In fact, if it actually happened, you could even say it was destiny at work. Yes, it would have to be destiny. Fate."
"Demon lord, is that a real story?"
"The legend certainly exists, but apparently there also used to be an ancient ritual of offering powerful swords as a gift to the mountain G.o.ds."
"I see. If there's some kind of amazing sword there, then I guess I can come with you."
Yesss, she took the sword bait! I'll order one of my subordinates to plant a nice sword somewhere on the mountain tomorrow. That way, nothing I said will have been a lie.
Then, the day came where Angelica and I were to climb a mountain together.
"Behold, Angelica, that is Mount Blade of Heaven!"
"Wow, it's pretty tall. And the air is so fresh here—of course it's not, stupid!"
We haven't even started climbing yet and she already called me stupid. This was not a great start.
"You know, you use a lot of coa.r.s.e language. Even if you are an adventurer, you are also a girl, so you should choose your words more wisely. Not that being a man means it's any more acceptable to be cra.s.s."
"Rather than that, what the h.e.l.l is with this mountain?!"
Angelica pointed at the mountain and voiced her complaints.
"It is indeed a tall mountain, but it's not like a demon lord and a hero could not scale it."
"That's not what I'm saying at all! This is totally in demon territory, isn't it?! I doubt more than a couple human parties ever came here in the last year!"
I was only familiar with the demon territory, so of course I chose a mountain in demon territory.
"All morning, the sky has been dark and cloudy, and I keep hearing these creepy birds squawking…… Even for you, this place is super horrible! If we stay here too long I'm totally going to lose my mind!"
"You should know, this majestic mountain has been voted one of the top hundred mountains in all of demon territory."
"More like, would an angel really leave a sword on this crazy mountain? It's like the worst place to leave something!"
Oh, c.r.a.p. If she kept poking at the story, she'd quickly figure it out.
"Even angels can make mistakes. Plus, wouldn't that be why there is still a story a legendary sword being here? If it's a sword with a deep connection to angels, perhaps it can't be touched by demons."
"Oh, I see… That's a good point. Plus, if it really is a super-powerful weapon, I guess I'd expect it to be somewhere kind of menacing like this rather than some peaceful place with weak monsters."
Ohh, so she believes me. Maybe I'll try saying it now.
"That is indeed the case. All right, let's start climbing this mountain! Come, follow your father!"
"Don't call yourself my 'father.'"
Somehow, we're off to a good start. All right, if I show her my awesome fatherly figure, then Angelica should open herself up to me more!
