ShetookmyarmandwestrolledincomradelyfashionbacktotheLandRoverand therug.Mirandawaslyingonherback,dozing,withDominiclooselysprawled overherstomach.Hiseyes,too,wereshut,hissmallfacerelaxed,thecontours roundedandappealing.

"Poorlittlesweetheart,"Popsymurmured."Pitytowakethem.

MirandawokenaturallywhenAlessiareturned,andwithDominiestillasleepwe setoffontheshortdrivehome.Oneoftheb.u.mpsintheruttedDownstrackmust haverousedhim,though,becauseIsawhimhalfsitupinMiranda'sarmsand thenlieback,withMiranda'sheadbentoverhimasiftolisten.

Alessiagavemeawildlookandshetoobentherheadtolisten,butIcould hearnothingabovethesoundoftheengine,andanywayitdidn'tseemtomethat Dominic'slipsweremoving.

"Stopthecar,"AlessiasaidtoPopsy,andPopsy,hearingtheurgency,obeyed.
