Chapter Seventeen.
The Journey is the same whether you are on a path to Enlightenment or just trying to shine the light of understanding on your issues. Darkness and shadow represents the anger, fear, embarra.s.sment or pain we have experienced in our lives. Looking into the dark recesses of ourselves is described as the Process or Processing in Spiritual terms. Often when we feel the safest is when healing can begin. It happens most when we are amongst people who love us unconditionally so that we feel protected when our issues surface.
Our souls know when it is safe to deal with things that were previously unthinkable. Processing can be different for each individual but it often manifests itself as an emotional release. Once the process begins and the conscious decision is made to ride it out great progress can be achieved. It takes great courage to deal with our own personal issues. If it were easy it wouldnt be an issue.
Keep in mind that eighty-five percent of people on the planet will never walk down that road and there is nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is on a Spiritual path or Journey. Not everyone is ready. That is not a character flaw... it is just where that person is at this time in s.p.a.ce. Try to honor and respect each persons Journey even though sometimes it can be very hard to watch.
Be kind and gentle to yourself and listen to your body. Give it rest when needed, eat healthy food and moderate exercise and keep hydrated. Remember that one meltdown will not totally rid you of the pain. They say issues are like an onion that needs to be peeled back layer by layer. I like to think of it as a grain of sand that has infiltrated an oysters sh.e.l.l. We cover it with layer after layer of material to protect our soft interior but in the end, if we are lucky and successful we are left with a precious gift... a pearl.
In the light... Mysticdreamer *
Glenn woke up with the familiar uncomfortable feeling that always seemed to be in the background of her consciousness. Shed spent the majority of her life living with anxiety to more or lesser degree. Most times it was manageable while other times it made it impossible for her to function. When Michael left she had a breakdown of sorts which she never told anyone about. Being here in Burks Falls enveloped in the unconditional love of her family had given her the time she needed to find emotional balance in her life. Glenn realized with relief that she wasnt as broken as she thought. She was cracked and damaged yes but NOT broken.
Glenn sat up in bed but this morning she had to force herself to put her feet on the ground and start her day. She shuffled into the kitchen. Sona was sitting there as usual enjoying the tranquility and solitude of the early morning. "Oh G.o.d you look like h.e.l.l!" Sona blurt out without thinking. "Um... thanks?" Glenn said going straight to the coffee maker. "Do you want to talk about it?" Sona asked. "I havent been drinking if thats what youre thinking... and no I dont want to talk about it. Just the same s.h.i.t." Glenn downed almost her entire mug of coffee scalding her throat in the process. "Im here if you need anything sweetie." Sona offered. "I know. I have to get to work. Ill see you later." Glenn retreated as quickly as possible.
The morning rush was uneventful but Glenn found herself feeling fragile and feeling more and more like she was going to burst into tears at any moment. It was only a matter of time and the worst part was she didnt even know why. Glenn went into the diner kitchen to see about a special order but when she went to return to the dining room she walked straight into Yvette. The plate of food shed been carrying crashed to the floor. Glenn ran to the back door before anyone could see the tears that had welled up in her eyes.
Markie whistled to herself as she strolled into the diner. She knew when her favorite pie was being baked and shed been thinking about it all morning. Her mouth watered at the thought of a thick slab of strawberry rhubarb pie with real whipped cream on top. From what she could see the diner seemed to be busier than usual with a large number of long haul truckers in the parking lot. The workers who were working on the lot and were in the process of building the outdoor seating area probably accounted for the extra patrons.
Markie went to the back booth and was grateful that spot was reserved for family and friends. She was about to sit down when she heard a crash and loud voices coming from the kitchen. Markie jumped up and went to investigate. "Whats going on back here?" She asked even before she could a.s.sess the situation. One of the Sous Chefs pointed to the back door in response. Yvette was half way through the back door when Markie popped her head out and saw Glenn. "You take care of the diner. Ill take care of my sister." Markie told Yvette.
Yvette nodded and went back to work leaving Markie and Glenn alone. Glenn was seated on an old milk crate with her head in her hands sobbing. Markie pushed another crate close and sat down. "Hi" She said gently. Glenn stopped crying but continued to cover her face. "What happened?" Markie prodded gently. "Im having a f.u.c.king nervous breakdown! What does it look like Markie?" Glenn shouted. Markie reflexively sat back from the verbal a.s.sault while at the same time noticing her sisters red and swollen eyes for the first time.
Markies expression softened. "I know that honey but what brought it on?" Markie continued to ask with compa.s.sion. Glenn looked at her sister like she was from another planet. "I have social anxiety Markie! How can you not f.u.c.king know that!? Ive had it all my life." Glenn said impatiently. Markie just looked at her sister. Tears streamed down Glenns face and she wiped them away with the back of her hand. Markie knew that nothing she could say would make any difference at this point.
Markie reached out and placed her arm around her baby sister. She tried to pull her close for a hug but Glenn resisted. Markie and Glenn had never been the touchy feely types with each other and hugs were rarely doled out but she thought Glenn knew how much she loved her. When Glenn needed help moving or to borrow the car when hers was in the shop or even when she needed a place to crash Markies door had always been open. It occurred to her now that Glenn needed a more demonstrative approach. Markie pulled her in for a hug again and this time Glenn allowed it. "Im sorry Im such an a.s.shole sometimes. I didnt realize how rough its been for you honey. No offense, but youve been very good at disguising your stress and anxiety over the years. I guess I thought it was something you were managing." Markie admitted.
Glenn clutched her tightly while sobbing into her chest. "I love you Glenn and Im always here for you." Markie said the words but they almost caught in her throat. Why was it so hard to say "I love you" to her baby sister? She decided that she was going to keep saying it until it flowed smoothly and comfortably off her tongue. Glenn sobbed all the stored up emotions and stress shed been holding onto for so long. She let Markie hold her long after shed stopped crying enjoying being enveloped in Markies strong protective energy. "Im sorry I swore at you." Glenn finally said as she sat upright. "Its ok. I needed to hear it. Were comfortable giving each other a hard time but not so much when it comes to saying the really important stuff. Im going to do better I promise." Markie said looking her sister in the eyes. "Im sorry Im such a mess. I think I was born broken." Glenn said. "Youre not broken Sweetie, youre just a sensitive soul."
Markie reached out and moved a strand of hair out of Glenns eyes. "Is working here going to cause you too much stress?" Markie asked. Glenn smiled crookedly. "No actually Im really enjoying working and meeting new people. Im glad you asked me to come to Burks Falls." Glenn said. "Im glad youre here too. Can you tell me what brought all this on today?" Markie smiled warmly. Glenn took a deep breath and heard it catch in her throat. "Stuff just builds up and its like a volcano. Pressure builds up slowly until eventually it needs to be released." Glenn tried to explain.
Markie nodded understanding. "Can you go back to work or do you need to go home for the rest of the day?" Markie asked still concerned. "I think Im going to be ok. Mind you I have had times where I just balled for three days and just wanted to hide in my house but I feel ok today. Thanks for being there and not making fun of me." Glenn said looking down at her hands. "Now that I know whats going on with you Ill try to be more understanding... no promises though. Ive been told I can be a bit of a jerk." Markie said straight faced. "Youre not that bad." Glenn agreed. *
Glenn went back to work for the rest of her shift and thankfully everything went smoothly. Yvette took most of the orders doing double duty behind the counter until Glenn told her she was fine. Glenn smiled seeing Emma and Spencer arrived after school for their shifts. She really loved having them around. The diner stayed busy until almost closing time as it was meatloaf and fried chicken night. Most of the food served at the diner had a decidedly healthy slant but sometimes people just wanted comfort food. Glenn liked that everyone could find something they liked on the menu.
Emma dropped Spencer off at home after their shift while Glenn stayed to supervise the evening cleaning staff. Georgio had the night off and Glenn sent Yvette home. Glenn sat at the back booth looking over the books. She was more than a little curious how the diner did financially and she was pleasantly surprised at how well the diner was doing. The cleaning staff finished up so Glenn went to put the ledgers back in Tullios desk and lock everything up tight. She wanted to take one last look around and to triple check that everything was turned off. Glenn snapped the last of the lights off and started toward the door when an older fragile looking woman wearing a flowered dress with a white lace collar strolled in. "Excuse me maam but were closed." Glenn said. The woman smiled warmly. "Thank you dear. I just had to get a look at the old place." The woman said smiling warmly.
Glenn moved closer until she was only a few feet away as the woman held out her hand. Glenn reached out her hand and shook the soft warm hand of the woman amazed at her completely white wispy hair. "Did you work here?" Glenn asked her. "Not exactly my dear. My husband and I owned this diner. He always said I could cook up a storm and he loved people." The woman suddenly had a far-away look on her face as if she were remembering. Glenn was feeling particularly accommodating and she felt strangely drawn to this woman so she offered to show her around. "No no... thats not necessary. Ill come back again when youre open. It was very nice meeting you my dear." The woman said as she gave Glenn a warm smile and retreated silently out the door.
Glenn hesitated momentarily. "Come back tomorrow and Ill have Chef whip you up something special..." Glenn called out to the woman and followed her out the door but when she stepped over the threshold her words were cut short. Glenn looked in every direction but the old woman was gone. She hurried and looked around the side of the building but saw nothing. The hair on her arms and neck suddenly stood on end. Glenn stood with her hands on her hips wondering what had just happened. Finally she locked the door of the diner and went to her car. She took one last look around before she climbed into the drivers seat and pinched the bridge of her nose. It had been a long day and she was ready to go home. *
Chapter Eighteen.
The next day Glenn told the diner staff about the old woman the previous evening. Georgio and Yvette looked knowingly at each other. Glenn caught the look and asked them to explain. Both of her new friends shuffled uncomfortably. Glenn took a deep breath. "Alright spit it out you two." She said with an audible sigh. Georgio and his helper went back to their prep work obviously avoiding the question. Glenn looked at Yvette expectantly. "There have been rumors that Mrs. Cole comes by once in a while to check on the diner." Yvette offered. Glenn rolled her eyes. "Who is this Mrs. Cole?" She asked. "Shes the woman who built this place originally. It was a dream she and her husband had." Yvette said before turning away to make sure the condiment containers were full. "But I thought the people that built this place never completed it because the wife died and..." Glenn let her words trail off as she tried to wrap her mind around this realization. "I shook her hand. Is this whole frigging town haunted?" She mumbled under her breath. Yvette didnt respond. *
Sona had one spot open at her after school program since Irene left. Shed received a phone call from a woman who wanted to find a place for her two special needs children so Sona agreed to meet with her. Thankfully Lydia had returned to work and her wrist was mending nicely. She was getting used to the children and the routine and everything was going along nicely. It took time to get used to each childs specific quirks but they had come to like her very much. Sona was reluctant to upset the delicate balance but when the call came she agreed to meet.
Markie had moved her office to the Pastors old library so she would have more s.p.a.ce for her photography equipment. The office was exquisite with oak paneled walls and desk, ornate gothic door frames with leaded windows and worn leather furnishings. Markie was taking her "job" as family protector very seriously and she was intent on being close by for Sona and the girls just in case there was a recurrence of the previous week.
Ms. Lawson arrived with her daughters in tow. Sona guided them into the recreation room while Lydia stood at a distance to observe. Sona gestured to her desk where they could have a private chat and get to know each other a little better. Ms. Lawson was a stocky woman who walked with purpose into the s.p.a.ce scrutinizing everything as she went. The eldest daughter, who was in high school plopped herself down on the floor and rocked back and forth in spite of there being an available chair. The other daughter who looked to be in middle school carried an armful of stuffed animals and just stood nearby.
Sona had seen insecure children carry blankets or a stuffed animal but this child held as many as her stubby arms could hold. Ms. Lawson sat down smiling. She explained that she and her boyfriend both worked and there was a gap between the time school ended and when they arrived home from work of about two hours. As Ms. Lawson spoke the elder daughter interrupted several times to ask Sona questions. Sona patiently answered them until they became personal in nature and then she skillfully changed the topic.
Ms. Lawson explained that she and her daughters had been having trouble with the Educational a.s.sistants at the school. Shed made several calls to the Board of Education with no satisfactory result. She also explained that they had several Personal Support Workers that had been a.s.signed to their care but none of them had worked out. There seemed to be something "wrong" with each and every one of them. Sona was starting to see a pattern and suspected that the problem wasnt with the various workers.
Sona watched the younger daughter Amy as she circled the room out of the corner of her eye. Ms. Lawson continued to explain that her Sitter had found other employment so she was desperate to have her daughters placed in a suitable program. The younger of the two siblings dropped her Stuffies and went straight to a cork board that Sona had asked Markie to erected to display the Childrens artwork. Amy quickly and without warning tore several of the pictures off the board tearing and crumpling them as she went. It was a flurry of destruction and unprovoked aggression.
Ms. Lawson went to stop her but when confronted Amy immediately started to punch herself around her head and face. Ms. Lawson went to her purse and pulled out a portable DVD player, turned on a Disney movie and handed it to Amy. Sona watched both children with fascination especially noticing the family dynamics involved. Neither child had learned boundaries and aside from giving them everything they wanted, when they wanted them there didnt seem to be any attempt at direction. Red flags went up in Sonas head.
Ms. Lawson seemed to blame both the EAs at the school and the seemingly endless string of caregivers for her childrens behavioral and social problems. Sona stood to signal the conclusion of the interview. Ms. Lawson instructed the elder daughter Cathy to help her younger sister with her stuffed animals but instead of helping Cathy went on a verbal diatribe asking why she always had to help and a dozen other topics. Cathy finally picked up a few of the herd of Stuffies as Amy screamed and threw the ones shed been carrying on the floor. Sona knew that this family needed more than what she was capable or prepared to do when it came to care.
Sona concluded the interview and walked the threesome to the door just as Shaley, Spencer and the rest of the gang arrived. "Im sorry Ms. Lawson but I only have one position available and to be honest I dont think this program is suited for your needs." Sona tried to be honest while at the same time trying not to hurt her feelings. "But I really need help here and you have all this room! Cant you find some way to allow my girls to attend? I am subsidized and if necessary I can add a little bit more money on top of the regular fee." Ms. Lawsons voice started to rise in volume. "Im very sorry Ms. Lawson." Sona said smiling and holding her hand out to shake with the woman. Ms. Lawson ignored the outstretched hand while not even trying to disguise her decidedly p.i.s.sed off expression.
Shaley and Spencer ran down the hall toward the recreation room giggling as they went. When they saw Sona and Ms. Lawson they slid to a stop. "Wain" Spencer said to her. "Is it raining?" Sona asked him. "Ya.. mowo" Spencer replied. "Its going to rain tomorrow too?" She asked him. "Yup" Spencer giggled pulling his cowlick. Some of the Educational a.s.sistants that worked every day with Spencer all year still didnt understand him but Sona seemed to understand him perfectly. With a few words and simple hand signs he was almost always able to get his point across. Sona smiled and rubbed his back gently guiding the kids into the Rec room.
Sona watched the Lawson family get into their mini-van and pull out of the driveway before returning to the bas.e.m.e.nt Recreation room. "What happened here Auntie?" Shaley asked Sona. She held up pieces of the torn art questioningly. "I was just interviewing a family for the spot Irene vacated." Sona told her noncommittally. "I know those two. One goes to the high school with Emma and Spencer and Ive seen the other at my school. Are they joining the program?" Shaley asked frowning. "No...bad!" Spencer said adamantly shaking his head and pointing to his shredded art work. "Dont worry Spencer. We dont have room for them here. Their mom will have to find some other place for them." Sona rea.s.sured the children. "That lady has p.r.i.c.kly energy." Shaley said making a face that looked like she had just bit into a lemon.
Lydia took this opportunity to move closer. "Ok guys, who wants to make sock puppets?" She said cheerfully changing the subject. Spencer and Elizabeth quickly ran over to the activity table. Sona and Shaley had spent some time the previous day buying a package of tube socks, white glue, colored felt and wool. They made braids and hair pieces with the wool, a.s.sorted shapes for faces, bows and clothing all ready to be applied. All the kids needed was their imagination and glue and Bobs your Uncle... customized sock puppets.
Most of the children busied themselves with crafting while Sona watched on in case anyone needed a.s.sistance. Eventually everyone had a sock or were playing video games so Sona went over to her desk. She sat down and there was Ms. Lawsons application sitting there. Sona looked at it briefly then opened her top desk drawer and placed it on top of the pile. Sona decided she would rather have the available spot vacant than have that kind of chaos and unpredictable behavior in her program. Lydia saw what she did and went to stand beside her. "So youre going to reject her application?" Lydia asked. Sona nodded. "I think its best." Lydia started to walk away. "Good" She said quietly.
Sona stood and the two walked to the corner of the room farthest away from the children so as not to be overheard. "Why did you say that?" Sona asked. Lydia bit her lip uncomfortably. "Ms. Lawson tried to have a teacher and an EA fired last year. She caused so much of a stink the teacher asked for a transfer which meant a much longer commute for her and the EA who was already under tremendous stress to begin with took a leave of absence." Lydia chewed her thumbnail.
Shaley had stealthily moved closer and overheard most of their conversation. "Auntie Im going to get Naomi to clear this place when she comes to get me on Sat.u.r.day. Im going to call her and make sure she brings her supplies." Shaley said nonchalantly. Sona didnt discourage Shaley when she thought something was necessary. "Thats fine" Sona said moving away from Lydia and Shaley to return to the other children. This whole situation was starting to make her feel uncomfortable and she actually felt chills roll across her skin. She had a feeling she hadnt heard the last of Ms. Lawson. *
Chapter Nineteen.
Markie and Glenn sat at their table at the diner. "I hardly see you anymore so I thought I would come by and have lunch with you." Markie said to her sister. It had been over a month since Glenn had arrived and Markie wanted to get the scoop. "Its been really great Markie honestly. Except for the one episode and a few close calls I think Ive done pretty well." Glenn told Markie who reached across the table and gave her hand a squeeze. Glenn blushed and looked into her coffee mug.
Markies brows pinched together in the center of her forehead. "Alright whats going on? You look like the cat that swallowed the canary." Markie asked. "I met Georgio at the Legion the other night after work. It was nice." Glenn said turning a deeper shade of red. Markie just raised her eyebrows and looked on questioningly. "It wasnt a date or anything. Lydia and her boyfriend Beau were there. I just meant it was nice to be out with new friends and have some laughs... and no I wasnt drinking." Glenn smiled. "Im glad you had a good time." Markie said but studied her sister carefully. "I like Georgio, hes sweet. I had a c.o.ke and we played pool. He invited me to go out with him on his sailboat sometime soon." Glenn explained further. Glenn traced the rim of her coffee cup with her index finger. "Its ok to have fun honey. Its time." Markie encouraged. "Ya, I think it is too!" Glenn agreed.
The bell at the front door of the diner chimed as Tullio stomped in smiling from ear to ear. "Uncle come sit with us! Hows the work at the old Cole place coming along?" Markie asked. Tullio sat down and gave Yvette his order. "Im starving! The work is going good. Ive been so happy getting back to work with wood Marquesa. Its been a big job and I dont want to do it again full time but the odd job would be nice." Tullio explained. "Ive been thinking." He continued as he took a bite of his Club sandwich. Markie and Glenn looked at him questioningly.
Tullio carefully chewed and swallowed. "I came here to retire, help you out and enjoy myself. I work more than I ever did and so were thinking of selling the diner." Tullio blurt out. Markie was about to take a bite of her sandwich and it hung there in midair. Glenns face blanched. Tullio drank his coffee in two gulps and wrapped the rest of his sandwich in a napkin and headed out the door waving as he went. Glenn and Markie looked at each other in shock and dismay. "Holy s.h.i.t! That was a surprise." Markie said when she was finally able to find the words.
Markie looked over at her sister and saw that all the color had drained from her face. "Whats the matter?" She asked. "I feel like Ive been punched in the gut!" Glenn said swallowing hard. The two sisters sat quietly for several minutes absorbing the news. "Hey Glenn why dont you buy the place? Youve been having a great time making new friends and the place makes a decent profit. It might just be the perfect place to start a new life." Markie made all the right arguments. Personally she would love it if Glenn moved to Burks Falls permanently but it also had to be right for Glenn. Glenn swallowed hard and shook her head. Markie was about to suggest managing the place but her thoughts were cut off by her sisters words. "I cant Markie, now can we please drop it?" Glenn snapped. Markie knew that tone and did as he sister asked. *
Trish Lawson sat at her kitchen table having a smoke and drinking a coffee. Amy sat on the living room floor rocking back and forth staring into s.p.a.ce humming. "Who does that little b.i.t.c.h think she is?" Trish said forcefully. "I need a place for my kids and she has the s.p.a.ce. She has no right denying me. Im going to call and get her freaking license pulled. Thats discrimination! Im going to make her sorry she ever crossed me." Trishs tirade went on for several minutes. "I dont want to go there." Cathy said softly. "Why the h.e.l.l not!? They have TV, video games and computers." Trish took a long drag of her cigarette drawing the smoke deeply into her lungs.
Cathy shuffled from one foot to the other. "That girl sees ghosts." Cathy said looking a little scared. "She doesnt see any d.a.m.n ghosts! Thats all bulls.h.i.t to scam people." Trish said as her boyfriend walked into the kitchen. Hed heard Trish ranting many times and he knew to stay out of it. She wasnt going to stop until she punished someone. She could be a vindictive person at times blaming the world for any perceived slights real or imagined and he knew she could be very creative. "I dont want to go there Mommy. That place is haunted." Cathy said again. Trish squinted at her older daughter.
Trish stomped into the living room to retrieve her laptop. "I wonder what government agency oversees those programs." Trish said smirking. "Trish, why dont you just let it go for once? Its not the right place and Cathy doesnt want to go there... Move on!" Her boyfriend said taking a beer out of the refrigerator. It hissed as he opened it and he took a long swallow. Trish glared at him. He walked away knowing it was a waste of time and he might as well save his breath. *
Glenn returned to work but had trouble concentrating. She was really starting to feel at home and now she felt like it had all gone to s.h.i.t. She sat at the back table going over the receipts after closing as usual but still she was having trouble focusing. "These numbers are really good and can only get better with the summer season coming up." She thought to herself. She sighed and tossed her pen down on the table. Why was she torturing herself? There was no way she could take on that much responsibility. Not now... maybe not ever. She packed up her gear, locked the receipts in the desk and headed out to her car.
It was a beautiful late spring evening and once again it was raining. It was the kind of soft spring rain that made the ground smell like worms. It was a feast for the Robins and brought forth new buds on the trees and encouraged the bulbs of all varieties to shoot up a rainbow of colors overnight. Glenn smiled to herself. This was the time of year she liked best and gave her hope of a new life and new beginnings. She tried very hard to stay in that energy rather than the alternative. *
Glenn felt someone sit down on the edge of her bed. She felt like she had just fallen asleep but she forced her eyes open. Her mind felt sluggish as she sat half way up and rested on one elbow. Sitting at the bottom of her bed was Nurse Gordon as real and as solid as anyone. Glenn felt disoriented but not the least bit frightened. Nurse Gordon just sat and stared at her until she couldnt take it any longer. "What?" Glenn said rubbing her eyes with the ball of her hand. "Why are you so scared to get on with your life?" Nurse Gordon asked. "What do you know? You dont know anything." Glenn mumbled. "I know you have an incredible opportunity staring you in the face and you just want to crawl back under your rock where its safe." Nurse Gordon responded. "Pfft. Youre one to talk! Why are you still hanging around?" Glenn said but almost immediately felt terrible for saying something so cruel... even if it was to an apparition.
Glenns face went slack and she reached out her hand to Nurse Gordon. "Dont change the subject. What you need to do now is stop being a pansy and embrace life again." Nurse Gordon said adamantly. Glenn sighed loudly and flopped back down on her pillow. "Go away!" She told Nurse Gordon but before she could take back her words she heard an audible pop like the sound of popping bubble gum. "Why dont people just leave me alone?" Glenn said exasperated. She looked but Nurse Gordon was gone. *
Shaley watched as Naomi cleansed the residual energy of the old Church and especially the bas.e.m.e.nt recreation room that was being used for Sonas program. She watched intently trying to memorize every nuance. She loved and trusted Naomi in some ways more than even her own family. She was able to talk to Naomi about spirits, her feelings and dreams and no matter how anxious she was feeling she always felt better after talking or just being in her energy.
Shaley waited for Naomi to take a break. "Ive been telling Aunt Glenn about you and how much youve helped me. She gets anxious and has panic attacks. I was thinking she might feel better with a Reiki treatment." Shaley suggested. Naomi continued to smudge the rec room. "Im not a Reiki Master but if she is interested we certainly can give her a treatment." Naomi said absently. Shaley watched on a little longer silently. "Ill ask her and see what she says." She said smiling. *
Glenn woke up still feeling tired from the previous days shift. "Staying up half the night talking to a d.a.m.n ghost doesnt make for a restful nights sleep." She thought to herself. Luckily she had taken the weekend off. This bombsh.e.l.l that Tullio had dropped on her was taking its toll. She went straight to the coffee maker and when Markie wished her good morning she just grunted. She took her coffee onto the back porch to drink in peace and quiet.
Shaley and Storm were running around the back meadow. The sound of her laughter permeated Glenns gloom and she couldnt help smiling. Shaley spied her and made a bee line for the porch. She plopped down into the deck chair out of breath and her cheeks flushed. "Good morning Auntie! Isnt it a glorious day?" Shaley said in a sing song manner. Glenn couldnt help giggling herself. "Where did kids get their energy and love of life?" She thought. Maybe it wasnt such a bad idea if more adults could feel that way... including herself. "Naomis coming over later. Were going to practice Reiki if we can find a volunteer." Shaley said smiling hopefully. "I dont know Shay. I dont really know that much about it." Glenn said noncommittally. "Well heres your chance to learn more." Shaley joked.
Glenn scratched Storms head that hed rested on her thigh. "Ill come get you when she gets here and were all set up." Shaley said before jumping down from the porch followed by Storm for another lap of the yard. "How the h.e.l.l did that happen?" Glenn mumbled. She had to hand it to the kid. She was good. *
Shaley unfolded Naomis portable treatment table. They had practiced Reiki treatments on each other many times. She had worked on herself, Storm and Ruby and the other students in her cla.s.s but she hadnt had much opportunity to use it on others. At 14 she was a little young to be attuned but after several discussions with her Reiki Master she finally agreed to attune her. Shaley had spent so much time with adults in the hospital she was a little more mature than most kids her age. She and Naomi also took another course that wasnt an official Reiki course called Ethical Principles of Reiki which helped her understand when and where it was appropriate to use it.
Naomi prepared the room the way she liked it before nodding to Shaley that she was ready. Shaley ran across the parking lot to retrieve her Aunt. She was so enthusiastic Glenn didnt even protest. The room smelled of Jasmine and the treatment table was set up by the window facing a wooded lot. The sound of Redwing Blackbirds could be heard twirtling their song in the distance. "Are you ready?" Naomi asked. Glenn shrugged. "I guess." She said uncertainly. Naomi frowned and looked over at Shaley. "Why do I have a feeling you didnt exactly agree to a Reiki treatment?" Naomi said looking suspiciously at Shaley.
Shaley had the good sense to look embarra.s.sed, looking down trying not to make eye contact with her Teacher. "I told her we needed a volunteer..." She said. "Are you sure you want to go through with this?" Naomi asked Glenn. "I dont know much about it but as long as it doesnt hurt I think Id like to try." Glenn said looking at her niece. "You lie on this table and relax while we gently place our hands in different positions on your body. Its totally non-invasive but it does have the potential of bringing up emotions that people have buried. Some people dont feel anything, some feel a buzzing or tingling, some fall asleep, while others burst out laughing or crying. It really depends on the person. There are as many responses as there are people on the planet. I understand that youve recently had a break-up. Are you sure you want to go through with this?" Naomi asked again. Glenn nodded her head affirmatively. "Good! Lets get started." Naomi said smiling.
Naomi still found herself being surprised by her protege. Shaley was an old soul and mature beyond her years. Reiki treatments entailed standing focused and present for long periods of time. For someone so young Shaley had that ability. Naomi would have to talk to her about coercing people into getting treatments but that was something she could learn. Shortly after her first degree attunement Shaley told Naomi that not only had her dreams become more vivid but she felt as though she had remembered something shed forgotten. It was a profound acknowledgement for one so young.
The hour treatment on Glenn went by the books for the most part until they came to the heart Chakra. Naomi stood at that position for some time until she felt a shift in the energy. Naomi opened her eyes and saw tears streaming down Glenns cheeks. Shaley noticed as well then looked over at her mentor. Naomi nodded while Shaley acknowledged the gesture and turned her face downward closing her eyes. When emotional releases occurred it was important to allow people to feel safe while they processed through the shift or release of energy.
The treatment over Shaley left the room momentarily sensing that Glenn needed time to pull herself together and maybe talk with Naomi privately for a few minutes. Naomi handed Glenn a tissue and left the box close by in case she needed more. "You did very well." Naomi said. Glenn continued to sob at memories of her lost life. She faced the loss of her beloved restaurant and her failed relationship for maybe the first time while Naomi held a ball of protective energy around them.
Naomi went over and gave her a hug as Glenn melted into her arms like a child into her mommas bosom. No words were exchanged as none were needed. Naomi had known loss in her own life and she was glad that she could be there to support Glenn. Shed grown very fond of her over the past months and understood why Tullio loved both Glenn and Markie so much.
Glenn finally pulled herself together. "I want you to take it easy for the rest of the day and if you want to talk to someone please give me a call." Naomi handed Glenn her card. Shaley returned carrying bottles of spring water and handed them out. "Whenever you get body work its a good idea to keep hydrated." Naomi casually mentioned to Glenn. Glenn accepted the water and took several long swallows. "Ok well thanks... I think." Glenn said sarcastically gathering her things and headed toward the door.
Glenn stopped her progress at the door way and turned back to face Naomi. "I think Id like to have more Reiki treatments. Is there any chance I can come by your place? I dont mind paying." Glenn asked Naomi. "Sure! Give me a call." Naomi offered. Glenn nodded affirmatively and left. Glenn went straight to her room for a nap after the emotional morning shed just experienced. *
Chapter Twenty.
Trish Lawson packed a small duffle bag with all the things she would need, candles and lighter, chalk, her camera and cell phone and a few other odds and ends. "Im going to show them they cant f.u.c.k with me. Does that stuck up b.i.t.c.h think I just fell off a turnip truck? No one is going to want to send their kids to their d.a.m.n program when Im done." Trish said as she stuffed her jacket into the pack.
Cathy walked into the living room. "Get dressed in those dark clothes I set out on your bed." Trish ordered Cathy. "Why? Its almost bed time." Cathy argued. "Because youre going with me, thats why." Trish spat. "Why cant Joe go with you?" Cathy continued to protest. "Someone needs to stay here with Amy while Im gone." Trishs voice rose in volume. "Just do what I tell you d.a.m.nit!" She hissed. Cathy stomped into her room and slammed the door. "Why does she always defy me?" Trish said from between clenched teeth. *
Shaley and Pippi loved playing in the old Church. Shaley had shown her best friend all the cool objects that still occupied its interior. Pippi stood in front of a painting in the vestibule. "I love the picture of the angels. They are so beautiful." Pippi said dreamily. "I wonder what it would be like to fly with those wings." Pippi thought out loud. "You dont need wings to fly when you die... but they are beautiful." Shaley replied. "Did I show you the closet I found in the back of the rec room in the bas.e.m.e.nt? Its so cool!" Shaley asked excitedly. "No! Show me!" Pippi replied as they ran down the back staircase past Markies new office.
The sound of their footsteps echoed on the polished marble floor. "Sona told me to put some boxes of craft supplies away in the closet and I found a bunch of props, decorations and costumes, robes for the choir... all kinds of things." They charged through the Rec room to the closet and swung the door open. "This is fantastic!" Pippi shouted. They found costumes for a nativity play which included kings, wise men, animals and angels. "Its getting dark out shouldnt we go back to the house now?" Pippi asked. "Were good for a little while longer. Hey look what I found, a rope and some other stuff. What do you think this is for?" Shaley interrupted. "Are you thinking what Im thinking?" Pippi squealed. The two friends jumped up and down with excitement. *
Cathy scowled at her Mother. "This is stupid! I dont want to go." She yelled much louder than was necessary. Trish grabbed the back of Cathys neck and squeezed the tendons that stuck out there. She leaned in closer to Cathys ear and whispered loudly. "Get your a.s.s in the car... now!" Trish spat. "Alright, alright!" Cathy stomped over to the minivan and took her place in the pa.s.senger seat. Trish climbed into the drivers seat and tossed her duffle bag between them.
Trish drove slowly through town doubling back several times to make sure no one noticed them. She pulled into the parking lot of the diner and parked as far away from the building as possible. She shut the vehicle off and they started crossing the old Cole property, the Cemetery and finally the Church beyond. "Lets go!" Trish ordered. Trish shouldered her bag and started trudging across the field with Cathy at her heels. The Cole property was 101.51 acres so it took longer than Trish expected to traverse the distance. "Im getting mud all over my shoes and for what?" Cathy mumbled. She stopped to pick up a stick to sc.r.a.pe the muck out of the treads.
They eventually made it to the Cemetery property. Trish scoured the neat rows of headstones and dark corners for any sign of people. She sported an evil smirk as they trotted between the rows. Trish scrunched down at the edge of the property overlooking the Church. Cathy knelt down behind her holding Trishs arm with a grip like the talons of an eagle. "Let go! What the h.e.l.l are you doing?" Trish pried Cathys claw like fingers from her forearm. "I hate this place!" Cathy sobbed. She was so frightened she could hardly contain herself. "Lets go back to the van please Mommy. Dont make me go over there. That place is haunted." Cathy begged.
Trish glared at her. "Shut up!" Trish said as she pried her daughters fingers from her arm once more. "Were going to do this right." Trish smirked. Even in the dim light of the moon that permeated the shadows Cathy could see the smile on her Mothers face and she knew that look very well. Her Mother had a mean streak a mile wide and the only saving grace was that for once she wasnt the target. Trish watched for any movement at the old Church before grabbing Cathys wrist and the two sprinted across the open ground between the Cemetery and the Church. They leaned against the Church in the lee of its overhang panting for several minutes. *
Shaley tied the rope securely and then gave it a firm tug. She even went as far as to hang her full weight from it just to be sure. "Are you ready?" She asked Pippi who was smiling broadly. The look on Pippis face was part unsure part elation. She nodded her head. "Lets do it!" She exclaimed. *
Trish took a large screwdriver out of her pack and pried open the bas.e.m.e.nt window. She instructed Cathy to climb through the window before pa.s.sing the duffle bag through and then followed herself. This was going to be a piece of cake she thought to herself. She stumbled slightly before gaining her balance then looked around what looked like a furnace room. The Church was extremely dark and this part of the bas.e.m.e.nt smelled slightly damp. The walls were fieldstone rather than cinder block like most modern buildings. Trish took out a small flashlight and shone it around the room looking for the exit. "There it is! Lets go." She whispered.
They walked slowly toward the door. Cathy squealed as a cob web brushed her face. "Shhh!" Trish ordered shining her light along the wall and ceiling. A lone Daddy Long legs crouched waiting for its next meal to pa.s.s by so it could inject its lethal toxin. "Mommy?" Cathy started to protest once more but was silenced. "G.o.d d.a.m.n it! Shut your pie hole!" Trish said clenching her jaw tightly. They made it to the hallway and hugged the wall stepping as lightly as they could. Cathy for her part shook uncontrollably with fear and antic.i.p.ation.
They pa.s.sed the Program room and climbed the back stairs to the raised chancel at the back of the Church. "Here hold this." Trish told Cathy as she knelt at the raised platform. Trish took out a piece of sidewalk chalk and drew a pentagram on the gleaming hardwood floors. She placed the candles at each point and lit them. She then went back into her pack and pulled out a digital camera then stood there and admired her handiwork. Trish stood back to take her photo in just the right position to show the tapestries on the walls so there was no doubt where the photo was taken. "Oh wait!" She said to herself giggling with delight. "I almost forgot the best part."
Trish pulled a dead chicken out of her duffle. She carried it by its still attached feet while its head swung eerily back and forth. "Oh G.o.d mommy." Cathy mumbled in horror. Trish placed the chicken in the middle of her drawing, placing it just so. She stood back once more to see how it looked, went back and repositioned the bird before snapping a few photographs. She put her camera back in her pack as the front door creaked. Someone came marching in with deliberate steps. "What the h.e.l.l are you doing in here?" Markies voice boomed. She stood there hardly able to believe what she was seeing.
Trish and Cathy stood motionless for a second paralyzed by surprise and fear. By the time they finally gathered their wits about them and moved to make their escape it was too late. Almost simultaneously Sunny came through the back entrance and spotted the kids hiding behind the curtain standing on the scaffolding that was used to hang decorations and props. Sunny was just about to yell to them to get the heck down when she heard Markies voice. "What the h.e.l.l are you doing in here?"
Sunny turned her attention away from Shaley and Pippi and moved toward Markie and the strangers. "s.h.i.t!" Pippi exclaimed as her footing slipped, she tried to grab hold of the rail but missed it by centimeters. She swung on the rope theyd attached to her abdomen on one end and the other tied securely to the beam high in the rafters above. Pippi wore one of the angel costumes from the nativity and looked every bit the arch angel she wanted to portray. The rope creaked and strained as her weight pulled it taught.
The group standing on the chancel looked up to see an Angel with large white feathered wings swoop past at break neck speed only to bounce off the far wall. She splat against the wall with an audible "Oof!" from Pippi as the wind was momentarily knocked out of her. Shaleys mouth hung agape watching her friend hit the wall. Her hand flew up to cover her mouth as Pippis body swung back the way it had come. "What the...?" Markie lost her ability to speak.
Cathy saw the image of an Angel descending upon them as a sign that G.o.d was very unhappy with their little prank. She clutched her Mother and started to cry begging whatever deity that was listening for deliverance. Pippis trajectory changed slightly after the impact and she found herself descending on the intruders. Shaley, Sunny and Markie all stared toward the heavens wondering where the Angel would land. Pippis swing circled them before smashing headlong into Trish and Cathy and they all went down like bowling pins in an alley.
The three fell to the ground as the rope knot loosened and they knocked down two of the five candles in the process. Sunny and Markie ran to extinguish the flames before they ignited the whole place. Shaley jumped down from the scaffolding and ran to make sure her friend was ok. Shaley snapped on the lights as Sunny and Markie blew out the candles. That was when they were finally able to take in the full extent of the scene... chicken and all. "What the s.h.i.t!" Markie shouted and headed straight for Trish.
