Joined the Royal Artillery, 1828; promoted to his present rank, 1857; served the Eastern campaign of 1855; commanded siege train at the fall of Sebastopol. Rewarded with the Crimean medal and clasps, Legion of Honour, 4th cla.s.s of the Medjidie, Turkish medal, &c, &c.

A magistrate of New South Wales, 183859; elected member of Council, 1848; formed the 1st ministry there responsible to Parliament, 1856; was member and vice-president of the executive council, 1st minister, and colonial secretary; subsequently colonial treasurer, and commissioner of railways, 1857; knighted, 1860.
