While we chatted, Artmer addressed me as Vry and I addressed him as Art, as per his request. However, two stunningly beautiful men walking together while chatting happily and addressing each other in such an endearing way… I know it isn't, but I can't help but feel gay right now…
Maybe I should have become ugly…
Either way, after we arrived at Bosta's warehouse, I couldn't help but think I was in a modern military facility.
There were hundreds of Magi flying above the warehouse, that was kilometers long and wide, plethora swordsmen squads with Magi leaders walked through the complex marching. This was less of a warehouse and more of a military barracks.
However, as a merchant guild, it's not weird that most of Bosta's forces are focused on their warehouse. Artmer was looking at me, with a smile almost as smug as Sixth's.
"So Vry… What do you think? Pretty amazing isn't it?" He asked, obviously hunting for praise.
Is this the guild's warehouse or your warehouse?!
"It's really incredible. I can't believe your guild has so many magi under it." But obviously I didn't point that out. Since it would be like arguing with your boss.
We pa.s.sed through the five walls of outer defense, in between there were houses and military facilities. It seems like the soldiers also live in the warehouse; this is probably the most modern sight I've seen since arriving in this world.
It's like that guy from that video game says: War Never Changes.
When we arrived at the main complex, there were two old men guarding the entrance. However, those two men shouldn't be underestimated, like you shouldn't underestimate the janitor of a shaolin temple or a kid with a sword in a fantasy world.
"Greetings to the Elders. Artmer of the main branch wishes to access the warehouse. Here are the doc.u.ments." Artmer bowed solemnly and handed over a stack of papers.
As per etiquette, I also bowed to the elders.
Those two are elders of Black Gold's collateral branches. Their descendants married into the Black Gold family, but that was all an agreement to get the elders into the family. After all, they were fourth rank magi. Money isn't that important to them, but Bosta's status, connections and resources are.
Merchants of this world know the most about the quote, "Money can't buy everything.".
"All is in order. We will now cast the detection spell." One of them said, and then started to cast a spell.
Before I could get worried, he had already cast the spell. His hands moved fast, so fast that they literally created sonic booms. A fourth level Magus' speed isn't anything to scoff at.
After he cast the spell, the light of mana enveloped Artmer and I.
I closed my eyes, thinking they would see my face. However, I could feel that the Illusion magic on me was still working, I looked at my hands and could see my skin was still white like snow.
"Don't worry, necromancer." The elder said. "The doc.u.ments mentioned your ident.i.ty. Tweaking the spell a little to avoid your Illusion isn't hard." He said, showing a warm smile.
His smile seemed welcoming, and this favor showed their willingness to cooperate with me…
Although, I could see through that easily.
Terrifying! Truly terrifying!
This att.i.tude, this warmth and feeling of "we aren't employer and employee, but family" is terrifying!
I can now see, that the merchants of this world are really progressive. This level of work relations is already at the level of the 21st century! No, even some companies in the 21st century don't act this way!
While all this BS swirled in my head, my outer expression was still indifferent. But by the way my shoulders were relaxed, someone who knows me would see I am happy.
"Thank you."
With a nod, the Elders opened the humongous doors they were guarding with a spell and the both of us entered.
As soon as we stepped inside, Artmer said.
"Vincent?"
As soon as he said so, a unnaturally beautiful man appeared out of nowhere.
"Master Artmer. What can I do for you today?" The man said with a welcoming smile.
"Take us to sector B-18 of the warehouse, where the items we recently brought are kept. Also, make a Golden Card for Mister Vrygewig and deposit 100k gold coins into it. Request protocol, 1008724."
"a.n.a.lyzing request protocol. Searching in requests table, confirmed. Okay sir Artmer, the card will be ready shortly. Please hold your breath, teleportation to sector B-18 will start in 5 seconds." Vincent said, by the way he spoke and the conversation he just had with Artmer, I already confirmed. This man is an AI, with a Hologram. It's not a bad one by the looks of it either… Why do I think this world is even more advanced than earth?
Either way, I held my breath and the AI used a teleportation spell to move us to another part of the warehouse. Teleportation isn't an easy magic, it's actually a powerful and extremely hard to master spell. (See more about teleportation in General Happenings.)
The place we arrived in had many chests and cages. The chests had items inside, while the cages had magic beasts and… Slaves.
I ignored the slaves and looked at the ton of chests in this place. I already knew there would be a lot of goods, since we used many carriages to get here, and many of them had magically expanded interiors.
"Master Artmer. Here is the listing of goods for this batch." Vincent said respectfully, with a stack of papers on his hands… Is this a hard-light hologram? Or a golem? I'll never know.
Artmer took the stack and handed it over to me.
"Get as many items as you need… Of course, if you take everything some elders might be angry." Artmer admonished me, but of course I knew that. Although they said, 'take as many as you want' they meant 'take as many as you want, but don't overdo it, we still need to sell things.'. So, I would only take what I need.
I looked through the papers and saw what I needed.
"I'll want this ice magic staff with a spell storage and spell amplification function. These magic materials. This magus armor, these warrior armors and equipment. This bag with expansion and weight reduction functions and… And this slave with the Void soul." (See General Happenings for explanation on Void Souls)
Artmer nodded and didn't comment on the slave, then asked Vincent for the items.
"Vincent will gather the materials, so we'll go get the slave." Artmer said, but a small smile was in his lips.
We walked towards the cages where the slaves were kept. Many cages had slaves with shackles on their wrists, swordsmen that became debt slaves. While a few of them had fully furbished interiors with n.o.ble men and women leisurely drinking tea or sleeping, those were n.o.ble war slaves, that had to be treated properly as tradition demanded. However, some cages had beaten up people, some with a ferocious look in their eyes and mana surrounding them, indicating they were magi. Those were n.o.ble war slaves that had their kingdoms destroyed, since their kingdom is no more, they lost their rights as n.o.bles. n.o.bles (mostly) consider themselves warriors, so if they fail to defend their kingdom, they are considered to not be n.o.bles anymore as per tradition. n.o.bles like these are rare.
Finally, we arrived at the cage where the slave with the void soul was kept…
If you read the t.i.tle, you should be able to guess what's in here…
There were two slaves in the cage. One was a little girl with bloodthirsty unblinking eyes, that looked at us with hatred. She had black hair and black eyes, a invisible pressure was emitted by her, not because she is a magus, but the murderous intention emitted by her was suffocating.
By her side was a woman with a body riddled with scars, that had empty eyes and didn't move. Her hair and eyes were black like the girl's.
"This is the slave with the void soul. Violet of Low Terrace, from the fallen Veritas Kingdom." Artmer said calmly, pointing at the little girl.
But I could only smile wryly…
