Ji Xingfan took a taxi to the city center, asking the driver to take her directly to the hotel that Bai Jin mentioned in his message.
Sitting in the car, Ji Xingfan saw through the window in front of her a man wearing a black windbreaker walking. From the man's back, she recognized it was Bai Jin. So he did come... She felt an impulse to get out of the car, but the car pa.s.sed him in a flash. Bai Jin seemed to have sensed something; he looked to his side, only to notice a dark green car window. From within one could see outside the window, but an outsider could not see within. So he saw nothing, but had a strange feeling as he continued to stare.
Arriving at the hotel, Ji Xingfan couldn't wait to get off the car. She took down the luggage, thanked the driver, and quickly ran to the door, muddleheadedly looking at Bai Jin, who had his eyes to the floor, walking on the road!
Bai Jin had been looking for Ji Xingfan constantly ever since he came to B City, but no matter how hard he tried, he was unable to find her. Agin this morning, he went out to look around for her, but failed again. The company was still calling him in desperation for him to come back, he grew so impatient with those people that he even scolded them. Exhausted, he trudged toward the hotel. A military vehicle pa.s.sed by, his heart leaped suddenly, and he looked up unconsciously yet saw nothing and thought his own behavior a bit strange. He shook his head while smirking, his mood then became gloomy again[Office1] .
When he was about to arrive at the entrance to the hotel, he looked up unintentionally and then froze. The lady he had been looking for and worrying about all this time was standing right in front of him. He started to doubt if he was hallucinating. Seeing Bai Jin approaching, Ji dropped the bag in her hand, and without saying a word, ran into the arms of Bai Jin, tenaciously holding onto him. Only until Ji was tight in his arms did Bai Jin realize it really was Ji Xingfan. He pressed her in his embrace, both did not speak a word.
After a while, Bai Jinput on a sulky look[Office2] and pulled Ji Xingfan away from him, "Why didn't you answer the phone?"
Ji tiptoed, holding his neck, and carefully staring at him. His eyes had dark circles, showing that these days he didn't sleep well. His short, black, thick hair was not neat, his eyes blood shot, face haggard, and his original image of a meticulous elite was far from what it used to be.
Though Ji Xingfan's eyes turned slightly red, she cracked a big smile, "Hey, here I am!" Understanding her position in his heart, Ji Xingfan felt so sweet like her heart was full of sweet honey, an overflowing pot of honey.
"You're still laughing!" Bai Jin said unpleasantly with a strict look, "Did you know I..." He almost became crazy from missing her. Words just on the tip of his tongue, but it was too hard to utter them. To avoid her from being too proud, he said, “If next time you do this kind of thing, I will not look for you. I'll leave you alone outside. I won't care a bit whatever you do.”
Ji Xingfan ingratiated him with a smil again.
"Tell me, where have you been all this time? Why don't you answer your phone or text back?"
Ji raised her hand and gently rubbed his cheeks. His beard was not clean-shaven and felt a little p.r.i.c.kly. He looked a bit untidy. Ji Xingfan touched the dark circles on his eyes gently, her heart aching a bit, “You've become kind of old.”
Bai Jin feeling gloomy almost vomited blood, "Why don't you consider for whom I am so worried for? Don't change the subject. Tell me! Where the h.e.l.l have you been and why did you disappear? What happened?”
"What happened?” As soon as the question was raised, Ji Xingfan's heart could not help but throb with pain. She remembered photos she had seen on Weibo; the sweetness that had almost overflowed out of her heart vanished. A wave of hatred rose in her eyes.
All his worry was fake. He actually was still with another woman. Bai Jin, how could I trust you?

Ai Changhuan and Lu Zhanke began a cold war, but the cold war did not last a few days because there was a change. Lu received an a.s.signment to lead operatives to support the border drug police to catch drug lords. For the sake of confidentiality, he did not tell Ai Changhuan what he would do nor did he say where they would go. Accompanied by a few guards, Lu knew that danger was inevitable.
Before leaving that morning, according to An Xin's advice, he organized a piece of land for Ai Changhuan in the yard to plant vegetables. He even a.s.signed her a task that when he came back he would check the results. Ai Changhuan was very sad she was really on the way to becoming a farmer in the valley.
She asked him how long it would take him to come back, so she could figure out what to plant so he could see the results when he returned. Lu brandished a spade and turned the ground over so that Ai Changhuan wouldn't have too much trouble planting it. The muscles on his exposed arms tightened as he turned the soil, his wheat-colored skin glowing with a healthy l.u.s.ter and thrusting hormones.
"I don't know," Lu answered. This time he was a.s.signed to catch all the nefarious drug dealers, so the task was quite dangerous, perhaps some might not even come back.
He had never thought of such a question before, for he was not afraid to die. He believed it was an honor to die for his country. But now, looking at the woman who squatted beside him pouring water, he hesitated for a moment, then resolved that he must come back because she must not be widowed so young.
Ai Changhuan handed him the water: "What vegetable do you think I should plant?" Knowing Lu's leaving, she was no longer cold towards him in fact she did not refuse for long when he compelled her to do the farming. She agreed obediently. What she feared most was parting ways, so she did everything as Lu instructed.
Lu Zhanke thought for a moment, "How about watermelon? The weather is so hot."
"All right." Ai Changhuan had a little hesitation. She felt that her experience could be written into an autobiographical novel, the t.i.tle could be:The Years of Being Abducted to the Valley to be a Farmer. Why not also realize another book on farming?
If grandpa knew she had become a farmer, he would be surprised. Lu Zhanke plowed the ground well, watered and fertilized it, all of which was easy to him. Back when he was a new recruit, the resources of the military region were limited, and the whole army had to partic.i.p.ate in labor, striving for self-sufficiency. It was against his good conscience that he made Ai Changhuan do these hard tasks, after all she was a delicate little girl much different to a rough guy like him.
While sprinkling water, he pretended to be casual and said, "If you're tired, don't try to be hard on yourself. Just do what you can, you know?” In fact, he believed, this piece of land was used to let Ai Changhuan play so that she would not be alone and bored and to keep her from doing some dangerous things. Now the main purpose of the land was to tie Ai Changhuan down, and he did not really expect her to be able to grow anything.
Ai Changhuan learned the meaning behind his words, and it was clear that he was looking down on her. Ai Changhuan immediately lost her stubborn temper, "It's just growing watermelons! It isn't tiring at all. You just wait, I promise to surprise you when you come back."
Lu did not mind her ambition, but asked, " Do not think this as fun and games. Farming is more difficult than you think."
Ai Changhuan added, "I am not afraid of hardship." Although she answered firmly, she still felt a bit of worry in her mind.
Lu Zhanke did not say anything else to discourage her, "If there is something you do not know, just go for An Xin. You may also go over there from time to time." He was still afraid that she would get bored and want to leave.
"OK, OK."
Ai Changhuan also had the same thought, she had no idea whether the vegetables should be planted vertically or horizontally. How could she successfully grow them? Of course she would need to ask Yang Anxin for help.
After thinking for a while, she said, "Be careful. Be safe. I will be waiting for you... to eat the watermelons I grow."
Although Lu said nothing, she knew that this mission must be dangerous because he was more talkative than last time. Hearing this, Lu Zhanke raised his eyebrows, then gently smiled, "Sure, I will come back to eat the watermelons, I will."
