Unconsciously she shuddered. The very thought of those people frightened her. Then she was only four. Her adopted parents really did not mind that she was just a kid. They were abusive. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.webnovel.com for visiting.
She was malnourished, beaten and almost defiled by her adopted father if not for the fact that the welfare officer happened to pay a surprise visit.
His excuse for abusing her was that she seduced him.
A four year old child? Seduced him?
He said she seduced him with her eyes. His statement was ridiculous to any person of sound mind.
Maybe that was why his wife married him, they were both insane. His wife had also claimed that Kim wanted to take her husband from him.
She ran about half naked in the house. They forgot they didn't give her the luxury of having complete set of clothes. Somehow it became her fault.
May be the Creator knew their abusive heart and granted them no child.
Thankfully, they were locked up and she was returned to the orphanage.
Somehow, news of the things that happened to her spread to the orphanage.
That was how the torture began.
She was the daughter of a prost.i.tute, wasn't she? How else could she seduced a man at her age?
Those malicious words got into the ears of the other children. No one cared that she was the victim of s-exual abuse.
All that mattered was that she had seduced her adopted father, caused the death of a few people.
The child who was once adored by everyone was maligned. Cursed at for being alive. Cast aside like a piece of dirty rag. She was left alone.
Not a family, not a friend. Alone to face the words of this cruel world.
Even when the matron was well aware of the things that happened to her, rather than protect her, she turned a blind eye
Who could bear to a.s.sociate with someone like that?
Until she was eighteen, she had to bear with the insults and unfair treatment of everyone at the orphanage.
Unknown to them, their words cut more than they expected. Or maybe they did expect him.
All the psychological abuse in place of physical abuse had destroyed her self-esteem, made her insecure.
"Kim!" He shouted. Waking her from her stupor
"Huh?"
Carl frowned, "What's wrong? I've been calling out to you. If it's too much for you, we don't have to talk about it anymore."
She shook her head, "It's fine. Ask whatever you want."
His gentle eyes and voice made her feel at peace.
'He is not like them,' she told herself.
"Are you sure?" He sought for confirmation.
She simply nodded.
"Then after then, what happened?"
Kim said nonchalantly, "I was picked from the streets by a welfare officer who recognized me. She took me back to the orphanage where I lived under the hate and prejudice of the matron and other children for being a witch."
May be because he had lived with her for long, he knew that even though she sounded like she didn't care and continued nibbling on her ice cream, she was really hurt.
He pushed the tray aside before embracing her.
"You're not unwanted, I won't abandon you no matter the reason. And what ever happened before… it's not your fault.
Like I said, you're my lucky star." He softly chanted by her eyes.
Even after he stopped speaking. His words sang in her heart like a broken record playing repeatedly.
The most beautiful broken record she had ever heard.
His words empowered her.
In a daze, she dropped the ice cream and hugged him back. She buried her face in his neck and like a druggie, she took a long drag that calmed her heart.
She was truly dependent on him.
"I'm your lucky star," she breathed, as if to remind herself of his words.
"Yes, you are." As he spoke, his hands found her hair. He lightly rubbed her hair.
His actions made her feel extra light like the burden she had been forced to carry was suddenly lifted.
Whether her dependency on him was good or bad, she didn't know.
Right now, all she wanted was to meld into his body.
Carl laughed at her antics. "Eat now, if it's not enough, I'll go get you more. Or should we go down?" He asked.
Like a spoilt child, she nodded her hair, "Unless you carry me."
Though she was joking, he complied by lifting her up.
He carried her like a weightless paper to the kitchen.
After he set her down, he opened the fridge to heat up dinner.
"I've opened up to you, won't you tell me your story?" She asked, still eating her ice cream.
"You know my story already, what else do you want to know? Ask away." He said as he busied himself.
"Let's start with your own family."
