If there was one thing Carl was scared of, it was falling in love. The was no love in the family he came from. He knew people were different, still his mother's story was something that scarred him. He was witness to how dearly his father treated his mother, so how did things turn out this way. Now he knows he was only pretending, the fact that people could mask all their feelings terrified him.

When the Blackwood family began declining, his paternal grandparents decided wealth was what was needed. And what better way to get it than from a merchant family? So the marriage between his parents were arranged. His grandparents were aware that their son was in a relationship with a girl from the lower province, they went ahead with the marriage, they didn't care if he had a hundred mistresses, as long as he had male children to carry the family name and the wealth from his mother's side of the family, all was good.

Young Carl blamed himself. He felt if he had told her, maybe she would not have been kicked out. He tried asking his grandparents for help, they pretended to be disappointed in his father but could do nothing about it. However, what they were most concerned with was people finding out the first madam was kicked out, where she died broke and alone.

Soon, he married his "childhood sweetheart", his mistress. Carl was privileged to find out the incident with his mother was orchestrated by her. With that, he shot out the world. He couldn't trust anybody. To establish her authority, "second madam" kicked out the maids loyal to the first madam, so little Carl grew up on his own, without love. He realized how wicked the world was.

Ryan was born into the family, he started following Carl around, Carl was skeptical about it. Although he had lost feelings towards everything, to gain a reaction from him towards any issue was a problem, except when his mother was mentioned. Ryan's innocence and naïveté made him believe one day, things would get better. So he didn't try to push him away again.
