The sound of the cry was coming from the direction of the main gate. Looking that way, I felt torn in two about what I should do!
Do I go and look? Or would it be safer to just head back?
I was slightly worried that I could be blamed by one of the four heroes. If something tragic had happened, then it would not be a stretch to say that would happen. However, if it was something horrific it was also important that I know about it.
There was a possibility that this would be important to my test. Or to another task that I currently had to complete.
It did not take too long to come to a decision about the course of action that I would be following. I needed to go and see what that commotion was about.
If I missed a crucial piece of information that might become beneficial down the line. I would be p.i.s.sed at myself.
Running, I bounce my way up onto the roof and a building. Making quick work I take off in the direction of the sound. Darting between rooftops I quickly started to hear the sounds of metal and clinking armor.
It appears that the soldier and guards were mobilizing and heading towards the sound of the disturbance too.
Soon the scent of blood enters my nose. It got so strong that I started to see red. Something inside of me gave way slightly and I sped up. Due to the sickly-sweet smell of the blood, my brain felt foggy.
With the increased speed, I quickly found the scene of the crime. To be more accurate I could smell the scene of the crime. It was caked in the heavy scent of blood.
Not a little bit of blood either, it was a lot of blood.
Landing lightly on the rooftop, I found that the crime was at the statue of the G.o.ddess. It was the same statue that I had seen women and children praying at earlier.
But now it was a completely different statue and feeling that surrounding it. The now horrific sight of it entered my field of vision.
The once serene feeling that the statue emitted was completely dispelled. In its place an awe-inspiring sight of terror rest. Something right out of a nightmare was in front of me.
Bodies of women are all around the statue. The statue was now covered in thick viscous blood that drips down from the top of her head. It completely dyed her hair red. The blood drips down the crown of her head and runs down her face.
The rivers of blood cut down the statue giving the appearance that she was crying. It drips down from her eyes and curls down around her cheek and small droplets of blood fall down her chin. It was as if she was crying crimson tears of blood.
At the top of her wings. The body of a woman rested on each of the wings. They had been relieved of their arms, and their hair was coated in blood. It drips down from the strands and falls on the wings. Dyeing the wings in the b.l.o.o.d.y red. I could see their eyes had been gouged out of their skulls.
They are all laid out as if there are martyrs. All around the statue of the G.o.ddess are women that are clothed in white clothes. Well, kind of white clothes the blood was slowly turning everything red.
The woman that are laid out around the statue in a circle all have their head gone. They had been beheaded. Their bodies arranged as if they are praying, much like the position of the woman that I had seen earlier.
From their bodies, they are all young women. I could tell from the scent of the blood too. They could not have been older than twenty.
From the headless neck of the women, an intricate symbol had been drawn in front of each of them. They appeared to be characters of some sort. Then from the symbols, a line had been drawn to the base of the statue.
All of this was, of course, in blood.
Only one thought came to mind as I stared at the horror in front of me.
A b.l.o.o.d.y ma.s.s. It was a b.l.o.o.d.y ma.s.s.
This was not the work of a goblin either.
I felt my mind start to warp. It could have been from the horror or the blood. Maybe, even both. But I began to step forward. I wanted to get closer it was drawing me in. Something primitive in my mind was screaming at me.
Digging my hand into my arm, I cut the flesh and feel sanity return.
Not too long after that the clinking sound of the armor grew louder. The soldiers had finally arrived.
It was a small company of twelve people. They were covered in some decent plate metal. A short sword was strapped to each of their waist and to the other side a standard-length sword. A torch was held in the hand of a few people.
The closer they got the more the expression on their faces twisted. A few couldn't take it anymore and began to vomit. The sight was so traumatic they couldn't control themselves.
Others couldn't look at the scene in front of them for longer than a few moments. After that, they had to turn their heads from the desecrated bodies.
Only a few soldiers moved forward. None of them dared to touch the woman and their bodies. The closet they got was within ten feet.
They took off their helmets and I found that two of the four are women. They are rather pet.i.te, and their hands are shaking as they hold their helmets. Bending down they place that on the ground and begin to offer up a prayer it seems.
Tears run down out of their firmly shut eyes. Soundless words leave their mouths as they silently mourn.
The men just look on at the scene and I see a few tears slide from their eyes. A man with brown hair stepped forward towards the woman that was closet to them in the praying position and inspected her.
His face twisted into a violent image. Rage burned in his eyes like a fire. Ready to consume all that was in his path. He reached towards the woman, but the man crying grabbed him.
"Don't touch her son! Y-you can't touch her, yet," said the crying man.
"She's dead. I'm so sorry," he continues. Holding the man in a firm grip.
The brown-haired man wanted to fight him. However, once he saw the look on the man's face the fight fled from his body. He sank like a sack of bricks it was like someone had sucked the life out of him.
It must have been family or even his wife.
The more I looked at the scene the more I felt like this was done to crush the spirits of the people. To insight more fear that even within the walls they are not safe.
Shaking my head, I try to understand where the cry had come from. Had someone gotten to this first and then fled the scene in fear? Or could these women have been taken here alive and then butchered to this extent?
Either way…
It was obvious that the turmoil wasn't just the threat of goblins. There was someone in this city that wanted it to fall.
[Task: Find the Servant of the Black G.o.d]
It looks like I had gotten my answer. There was someone that really served the Black G.o.d within these walls.
Another task got added to my list of tasks that I had. At the rate I was going I would have to tear this city apart seam by seam.
I notice one of the soldiers that had been looking away raised up a hand and a burst of light shot from his hand and exploded. Could that perhaps be a signal?
Soon, I heard more and more clinking. It seems like they had called for backup. Maybe, I should leave now. I now had something else to worry about and the last thing I wanted was to be cornered and blamed for this incident.
Turning, I run right into something. It didn't hurt but I quickly try to recoil in shock. But the firm and warm hand of a person presses into my back preventing me from moving at all. Looking upwards, I find that it was none other than Odd.
The Guild Master.
His s.h.a.ggy hair blew slightly in the wind and I found that his eyes are bright green. His mouth is drawn into a small smile and his hand on my back tightens. Standing I found that he was quite tall.
"What are you doing here little lady?" His ask in a deep and husky voice.
Fear sunk into my body. Just when in the world had he appeared behind me?!
How could I not have heard him!
