“Then do you know who’s coming?” Xia Wan inquired, her voice tinged with excitement. “And where have my uncle and the others gone?”
Zhang Ru gave Xia Wan a puzzled look. “I haven’t heard my father mention anything about it. Did your uncle leave on an errand?”
Xia Wan’s spirits dampened upon hearing Zhang Ru’s response, a sense of frustration washing over her.
“Sister-in-law, do you have any idea when Uncle Zhao will return?” Xia Wan’s tone conveyed her growing anxiety. “Or perhaps you could tell me where he’s gone. We might be able to track him down.”
“I’m not entirely sure. All I know is he left with my husband and a few others for the county town this afternoon. Their purpose? I’m in the dark as much as you are,” Zhang Ru admitted candidly. “But there’s talk that they’re onto some lucrative deal. They even had me prepare a large box here at home, claiming it would be essential upon their return.”
Xia Wan glanced at the box in question—an aged, weather-beaten wooden crate, its contents and purpose a mystery.
“Thanks for the info, Sister-in-law. We should get going,” Xia Wan said, a thought suddenly striking her.
She hastily ripped out a page from her notebook, jotting down a number. “This is my contact. Please ring me the moment Uncle Zhao gets back.”
With a hesitant gesture, Zhang Ru took the piece of paper, watching as Xia Wan quickly exited.
Upon reaching the courtyard, Xia Wan met Chen MO, who had just ended a phone call. “Xu Ye might have located the doc.u.ment,” he informed her. “Where is it?” Xia Wan’s face lit up with antic.i.p.ation as she clutched Chen MO’s hand.
“Let’s discuss it in the car,” Chen MO suggested, leading her towards the vehicle.
Once inside, Chen MO began explaining, “Wanwan, it appears Wen Shu might not be our prime suspect.
“His recent return has been anything but smooth.
“Xu Ye’s found that at least three groups are after the doc.u.ment. Wen Shu can’t possibly evade them all. It’s unlikely he’ll continue threatening your parents.” “Where is he currently?” Xia Wan pressed, eager to confront the matter head-on.
“We’re going to see him right now. We’ll get our answers directly,” Chen MO replied, pressing the accelerator as they made their way back to the county town.
Arriving at a decrepit building on the town’s western outskirts, they found Xu Ye waiting, seated on a rock among several others. He quickly got up to greet them as Chen Mots car pulled up.
“He’s inside,” Xu Ye directed them.
Xia Wan hastened into the ramshackle mud house and saw Wen Shu, slumped against a stone wall, his face covered in dust and stripped of its usual arrogance.
Upon noticing Xia Wan, he lunged towards her, yelling, “Xia wan! You’re to blame for all of this! I’ll make you pay!”
Weakened from lack of nourishment and rest, Wen Shu was effortlessly subdued by Chen Mot s swift intervention.
When Chen MO saw Wen Shu coming over, he raised his foot and kicked him aside.
Wen Shu crashed to the ground, tumbling over before resting against a rock, breathless and defeated.
Xia Wan approached him, her voice icy. “Where are my parents?” Wen Shu glared up defiantly. “Why ask me about your parents?”
“You really don’t know where they are?” Xia Wan’s tone grew even colder. “Then what’s your reason for returning?”
Wen Shu, infuriated, shot back, “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be in this mess! You and your naive sister, Xia Ru, are why I’ve been ousted!”
“If it weren’t for you, no, and your stupid sister, Xia Ru, how would I have ended up being kicked out of the house!”
“It’s all your fault! It’s you both!”
As he attempted another a.s.sault, Wen Shu rushed toward them.
Before Chen MO could intervene, Wen Shu, as if electrocuted, quickly withdrew his extended hand and started screaming and rolling on the ground.
“What’s wrong with him?” Xu Ye inquired, both curious and wary.
Xia Wan replied coolly, “A minor lesson. He needs to learn he can’t bully just anyone.”
Xu Ye immediately noticed the silver needle stuck in Wen Shu’s palm.
The silver needle pierced through the palm and out the back of the hand, looking far more terrifying than Wen Shu ts screams.
Xu Ye slightly curled his lips in distaste, subtly increasing the distance between himself and Xia Wan.
Xia Wan, ignoring Xu Ye’s actions, walked straight up to Wen Shu and demanded, “Tell me! Where are my parents?”
Wen Shu, with trembling hands, looked at Xia Wan and exclaimed, “You! You wicked woman! I told you, I don’t know!”
