Chapter 5 – Let's Join the Marines
"Of course!" Ace said with annoyance, "He might be 100 times more powerful than you s.h.i.tty Gramps!"
It was rare that Garp did not refute him and instead answered while touching his chin thoughtfully, "If you asked me if I could kill one hundred people with a single punch, I could manage that… However, it is a bit ridiculous that he can do it with as much ease as swatting mosquitoes. Based on your description, I don't think the cause of the bandit's death was Conqueror's Haki or a Devil fruit…"
After eating his last rice cracker, Garp suddenly stood up and turned his head towards Dadan's house, "He's on the second floor, isn't he? I'll see for myself what that guy's capable of... Going around and enacting justice as a hero, I'm starting to like this kid..."
As he started moving towards the house, his body burst forth with a terrifying aura. At this time, Garp's image had changed into one resembling a marine hero!
Ace and Sabo were shocked speechless, staring at Garp's back for what felt like half a day.
"Hey, Ace..." Only after a while could Sabo manage to speak, "Your grandpa is amazing! Do you think he can beat that Weird Baldy?"
Before Ace could reply, Luffy standing next to him suddenly spoke up, "Grandpa will definitely win!"
"How can a child understand?" Ace said with annoyance, "That bald sea monster cannot be measured by ordinary means, Gramps is definitely not his match."
Suddenly a deafening roar could be heard from Garp inside the house!
"The bald kid inside, come out for this old man!" His roar caused the ground to tremble, while Ace and the others were barely able to keep standing on their feet. The roar spread to the surroundings, causing countless beasts to scamper and escape to the deeper areas of the forest as if they had met with their natural enemy.
Saitama, who was leisurely reading a newspaper in the house at the time, could obviously hear the noise outside. He opened the door while holding his ears, and saw a healthy and energetic looking old man standing outside...
Both of them stared at each other for about 10 seconds before Saitama responded with a greeting, "Oh, Old man you sure are working hard! But I have already subscribed for newspapers."
...???
Garp was stunned and said with displeasure as he waved his hands, "This old man is not here to sell newspapers."
Saitama replied while thinking, "Umm... I don't need any insurance either."
……
"This old man isn't here to sell that either!"
Garp said with some resentment, "It seems that my grandson has been in your care, boy! I came here to settle his grievances by having a duel with you! How about it? Do you dare to come outside and fight with me? This old man also wants to see if the strength of the person called as a monster by that brat is worthy of that t.i.tle or not."
"Oh, not interested." Saitama did not give the old man any more attention and closed the door with a bang.
Garp, who had just had the door slammed to his face, was instantly furious and started kicking at the door, damaging it in the process. He shouted while pointing at Saitama who was lying on the floor and reading a newspaper, "b.a.s.t.a.r.d, you…" But before he could finish his line, he was sent flying into the sky with a punch.
"You will have to pay for my door!"
Garp's burly body smashed through the roof and with a smooth arc in the air fell onto the ground. The trio led by Ace gathered around the old man, as Luffy cautiously poked at him and asked, "Are you all right, grandpa…?"
How could he be okay? He couldn't react to the punch and even with his strong body was feeling the pain. However, putting aside his pride as a marine hero, he couldn't stay in such a shameful state in front of his grandsons.
He needed to act strongly as such he somersaulted from the ground and wiped his nosebleed while laughing, "This little scratch is not a problem for me, but you were right, Ace. That guy does have some skill, ha ha ha…"
Ace touched his own head helplessly, "Your acting is too obvious, s.h.i.tty gramps," Even so, he preferred the gramps to be like this instead.
Garp acted as if he did not hear Ace, and said solemnly to the trio, "That guy called Saitama has the potential to become a strong marine. Even reaching the Marine's highest combat force, the Admirals, isn't impossible for him. You two and Luffy should act with the goal of becoming the strongest marine in the future! Do you understand?"
"No!" The three children were full of confidence as they all shouted in unison, "I want to be the Pirate King!"
"b.a.s.t.a.r.ds! Eat my [Fist of Love]!" Garp immediately flew into a rage and knocked the three brats into the ground one by one.
After rubbing his aching chin, he re-entered the house. As he reached the second floor, he saw Saitama patching the door with a hammer and nails. The latter also obviously noticed Garp and his face was full of vigilance as he hurriedly put the door behind him, "Why are you here again?"
After sitting down in the hallway, Garp reached out his hand towards Saitama, "Come and join the Marines, Saitama. I've heard Ace talk about how you're from another world with monstrous strength and have a strong sense of justice. The bandits in the garbage mountain were cleaned up by you, right?"
"The Marines?" Saitama replied, with his head turned, "I had given that some thought, but to join the Marines you have to listen to the orders of people that are higher in position than you. I am a Hero and as such cannot accept the relationship between a superior and subordinate."
"That will not be a problem." Garp placed his hands on his chest and said earnestly, "You can follow me but you won't receive any orders from me as a superior. You can judge right from wrong yourself and move freely. You will also be given a good monthly salary and bonus."
The initial proposal was good, but after hearing about the salary and bonus, Saitama's eyes immediately lit up.
"Then it's settled!" He came forward and sat next to Garp and without any hesitation held his hand tightly. "I agree to join the Marines, please take care of me from now on, old man!"
(Huh?)
Garp was stunned by the contrast between Saitama's previous and current att.i.tude. He had thought it would take a lot of effort to convince the latter into joining the Marines. After all, in this era, powerful people were free to do what they wished like burning or looting to fulfill their goals. There were very few people willing to protect civilians at the risk of their own lives.
He didn't think Saitama would accept this easily. He stared at the ordinary looking man in front of him and smiled, "You can call me Garp. Three days later, there will be a warship coming to Foosha village. At that time we will set sail for the sea and make use of your righteousness to make the villains around the world tremble in fear, ha ha ha!!!"
