"Ah... Phew! Alright, where was I? Seems that we had a slight disturbance over here by Mr Director that wanted to end this series faster... Sheesh...it wouldn't hurt to write a chapter or two before ending this series right?"
Well, the thought of Mr Director trying to fast forward this series to an abrupt end had been foiled by me and p.o.r.nsak though. So back to the story.
p.o.r.nsak and I arrived after zipping through the midday traffic; it was in fact after 2 pm when we left the Monk's training ground. We entered the house and the cooling blast of air conditioners welcomed us as we plopped down on the sofas together. It seemed that the part-time housekeeper had done her rounds well and left slightly a few moments before we stepped into the house.
Our soiled clothes from earlier had been washed, dried and ironed and placed on top of our beds. The rubbish at the refuse bin outside had been cleared and also the same done to the one in the sink. The house was spick and span and a fresh tingle of rose was in the air. It was Ajax floor cleaner solution.
"So p.o.r.n, what would you like to prepare for dinner? You wouldn't mind eating rice don't you later?"
"As one eats rice or carbohydrates in the evening, it would be best to consume before 7 pm as our metabolism slows down after that period. Just a small bowl of rice would be fine for me. If I worry about the metabolism slowing down and I need some help in my digestion, surely a workout with you would do the trick."
p.o.r.nsak explains the metabolism rate and even playfully ran her fingers on to the front of my pants where my little soldier was resting. I thought to myself, that I was so looking forward to a home cooked meal rather than pa.s.sionate mad love making session before it.
"Hee... Hee... Hee... Don't be naughty, little p.o.r.n. I will help you in the kitchen to prepare dinner and we going to sit here peacefully to have one. So you decide later on if you would want to move out tonight or in the morning at 6 am? Why not we organise a bike convoy up to the Police Station tomorrow? "
I slipped my fingers and held p.o.r.nsak's hands instead of letting her to stimulate my little soldier. I suggested a motor convoy and said its a good idea to move out tomorrow instead of tonight. She picked up her phone and called to SPI team to suggest and they readily agreed. They would move out by 6 am and meet along the way, whoever reaches along the expressway first.
"It's settled then, Aroon. We don't have to spend extra money to stay at the hostel and we are going to prepare some dinner soon. Want to help me in the kitchen now?"
"Sure, let's go... I'd even prepare the things you need and you can cook them afterwards."
I rose from the sofa and stretched my hands at her and raised her up. We then walked, hands on each other hips like two lovebirds and entered the kitchen. We slid the sliding door of the kitchen close and began to take out the required ingredients and condiments from the refrigerator.
Alright, readers, this was what we going to cook for dinner.
1. Steamed Thai long grained AAA rice
2. Spicy and sweet chilli sambal sauce
3. Prawns sautéed in coconut cream
4. Stir-fried baby kailan in oyster sauce
5. Egg omelette with lots of chilli and onions and chopped string beans for variety.
After taking out the ingredients, firstly I made steamed rice after washing 3 scoops of rice in the rice cooker pot. After a single rinse, and levelling the water suitable for steaming, I placed it in the rice cooker and switched it on. This would take about 15 minutes to cook the rice.
Next, I took a handful of dried long chilli, place it in a small pot and filled it with water to simmer it. Then I took a few onions, garlic, a few centimetres of ginger, some grounded peanuts and some salted brown soya beans. After I had deskinned the onions, garlic and ginger I chopped them up and placed it in the food processor.
After the dried chilli had simmered and softened a bit, I drained them and ran it once in the running tap water of the sink. I cut it up into smaller pieces and place them in the food processor and blended it until it became even.
I scooped the contents into a bowl and set it aside and washed the food processor for the next round. p.o.r.nsak at this time had already prepared 3 beaten eggs which she had sliced onions and fresh chillies and added a pinch of salt. She then had chopped some string beans and washed them and set them aside as well.
Next, she had defrosted the prawns she had bought and set it aside on the counter. She took 3 stalks of lemongra.s.s, 1 onion, 3 centimetres of ginger and 1 clove of garlic. She prepared these and dumped into the blender with 150ml of coconut milk and blended it. After the contents had been blended, she poured it directly into a pot and let it simmer over the cooker hob as she poured 2 teaspoons of cooking oil into it.
She took the baby kailan and chopped them into twos. She then took out a packet of ready-fried shallots and set them aside together with a bottle of Lee k.u.m Kee oyster sauce from the refrigerator.
Its time to do battle in the kitchen! The rice had already been steamed and it set itself to 'warm' position. I just let it be as if prefer to raise it off from the cooker on the last moment when serving dinner.
I took a wok and set it on the cooker hob. After firing it, I poured a considerable amount of cooking oil since the sweet and spicy chilli sambal sauce would somehow need a lot of oil to prepare. When the oil in the wok gets hot I lower the fire and poured the contents that I had blended earlier into it.
It sputtered and sizzle in the hot oil and I turned up the cooker hood as well as an exhaust fan in the kitchen. I found a few fresh scallops on the refrigerator and dropped a few of them inside and was stirring the contents of the sambal.

A bit of salt and a sprinkle of powdered palm sugar was added to the sambal and it turned from fiery red to a mellow dark reddish colour. I lowered the fire to the minimum and let the sambal to be slowly cooked in the wok with occasional stirring to prevent it from getting burnt.
The kitchen smelled so heavenly!
When the coconut gravy was simmering steadily, p.o.r.nsak then dropped in the pieces of the prawn inside and flared up the flame for a minute. She took the gla.s.s cover for the pot and placed it tightly on top and then she switched off the fire. She then carried the pot aside and placed it on a heatproof circular mat.
She took another wok and began to pour some cooking oil in it. Once the oil was heated up, she poured the baby kailan into it and soon steam raised from the wok as the oil caught the fresh baby kailan and starts to simmer.
She turned the vegetables about and made it three quarters done before placing them on an oval serving plate. Soon she poured some oyster sauce over it and sprinkled the ready fried shallots to emphasise its look.
I took the wok from her and washed it aside. She then took a large frying pan and place it on the fire after adding some cooking oil in them. She poured the chopped string beans and some onions and sautéed it for a while before adding the egg, onions and sliced chilli in them.
She expertly handled the pan and flopped the omelette using a plate that she placed on top of the frying pan before overturning the egg. She then slid the omelette back into the frying pan to cook the underside. After it had properly cooked, she slid the omelette on the same plate and set it aside.
My sweet and spicy sambal was almost ready and were bubbling and simmering in the low heat. It made a mess of the kitchen surface as the spluttering sambal somehow got on the surface and some on the floor even. I had some paper towel that I had placed on the floor and used my feet to clean off the oil and some of the sambal that had spluttered.
"Time to eat, dear... I'm so hungry already!" as she tasted the sweet and spicy sambal and announced that it was ready. She took out the plate of omelette and baby kailan in both hands and went to set the dining table. I switched off the rice cooker and carried it to the front after placing a heatproof may underneath it.
I hurried to the kitchen and prepared two plates with some serving spoons and set it on the dining table as p.o.r.nsak had also placed the small pot of sautéed prawn in coconut gravy on it.
Next, I scooped a small portion of my sweet and spicy sambal on a small bowl and carried to the front as well. The kitchen looked like a ninja had come in and wrecked havoc but we will let the part-time housekeeper deal with it tomorrow.
I placed a small bowl with water to dip our fingers in and placed them on two small towels that would be used to wipe out fingers afterwards if need be.
Time to dig in folks! Yum yum... What a feast for a little family.
The early dinner was simple but plentiful and colourful too. I took some rice from the rice cooker that I had placed in the table and placed it on p.o.r.nsak's plate first and then mine.
The moment I removed the cover of the prawn in coconut milk, I was welcomed by its thick aromatic flavour or coconut, lemongra.s.s and ginger. Typical Thai dish and the prawns were done just right. If it is overdone, the sh.e.l.l would be turned reddish and stiff. I took some for p.o.r.nsak and mine with a generous amount of steaming gravy. My rice seemed to float in the thick coconut gravy.
p.o.r.nsak wanted to help herself so I gave her the serving spoon and I began to take a few stalls of baby kailan into my plate. I ate with my hands since we were at home and not feel its unhygienic or something.
Frankly speaking, eating with one's own hands is more enjoyable than eating with utensils. I'm not sure why, but it adds to the joy of finger licking lips smacking goodness to it. Unless your eating porridge or noddle then utensils were the way to go.
"AROIIII.....!!!" I can't help to exclaim out loud when I tasted the sautéed prawns in coconut milk dish. It was later accentuated with the accompaniment of the sweet and spicy sambal sauce as it collides and burst in my mouth and making my taste buds riding the Roller Coaster!
p.o.r.nsak can't help but chuckled at my behaviour as my I walloped the food before me. It has been so long since I tasted home cooked food and the street food or restaurants used to add too many artificial flavourings in them like MSG.
I piled another serving of rice as I added some other dishes to my plate. p.o.r.nsak glanced at me and suddenly her eyes seemed to sparkle as she watched me eat. Maybe she too had long wanted to have a family but with someone of her own kind, with a Third Eye and dying short before reaching 40 years old. Frankly, who would want to build a family knowing your spouse would die at a certain age.
I looked at her and smiled because certain actions, certain words were not necessarily be spoken as it was clearly be seen from the eyes instead.
After dinner, I helped her clear the remaining dish into airtight plastic containers and placed them in the freezer. Since its microwave friendly, we could heat them up later in the days to come.
All the pots and pans that were used were placed in the sink before wiping them down with paper towels. This practise helps to ease the cleaning part later as the oil and what-not had been cleared beforehand. The soiled paper towel was placed inside a plastic bag and placed in one of the sinks for disposal by the part-time housekeeper later on.
We sat on the sofa after our meal and watched some telly. It was a super filling dinner and after eating the coconut gravy, my eyes seemed droopy at that time and can hardly keep my eyes open to watch the telly in front of me as p.o.r.nsak too, was curled up beside me.
Well, my mother was right. After you had eaten your fill, raise your legs and go doze off. Haa... Haa... Haa...
