Upon arriving at what would be the future battlefield, Aldarion was impressed by the size of the Blue Mountains.
The Blue Mountains, also called Ered Luin by the elves, was a mountain range present in the far northwest of Middle Earth. Here the great dwarven kingdoms of Belegost and Nogrod, were established in the First Age.
However, at the end of the First Age of the Sun, when the elven and dwarven kingdoms of Beleriand were destroyed, almost all of the Blue Mountains sank into the sea. The part that was above the waters was divided into two by the Gulf of Lune, where Cirdan built the Gray Ports. In the northern range was the kingdom of Belegost, while in the southern range, was the kingdom of Nogrod.
The battle would take place in front of the gates of the dwarf kingdom. Aldarion had to admit that the doors looked very beautiful, because, even being carved on the mountain, it was very difficult to see them. If it were not for the fact that there was a road in front of these, and banners, with the banner of Belegost, you would not know that there are majestic doors there.
This, of course, was part of Belegost's defense system. If dwarves decided to hide, they would destroy the road, keep the banners and close the doors. In this way, dwarves could remain hidden for a long time, without their enemies knowing where the gates of their kingdom are.
The battlefield would be the foot of the mountain, so that the alliance would still have the advantage of height to defend itself against the cacique's army.
In front of the doors, dwarves prepared many defenses, taking advantage of the elements of nature, such as rock formations. Dwarves were geniuses for defensive battles.
Behind the army of the alliance, to the west, was the mountain range, so they could not receive attacks from behind; to the north there was a dense forest that prevented the enemy from taking a great attack on the northern flank.
Leaning on the rock formations, they had built two palisades, one on the north flank, and the other on the south flank. In front of the palisades, they had made a pit with wooden stakes. In addition, the palisades had some towers with catapults, two in the north and one in the south.
In this way, they would force the enemy army to attack the center, while they were suffering a great attrition, in front of the hara.s.sment of the arrows of the two sides.
On the southern flank, were positioned the one hundred elves, commanded by Feladrias. As they could be considered a killing machine, since elves can shoot arrows very quickly, and always. .h.i.t, they were only a.s.signed a catapult.
On the other hand, Aldarion, along with its thirty dunedain, would be positioned on the northern flank. Even being very good archers, they did not reach the level of perfection of the elves, so they were a.s.signed two catapults, in addition to a company of a hundred dwarves, who mainly handled the handling of catapults and striae, pending surveillance of the forest.
In the center, the bulk of the army, would be formed by the famous dwarf iron phalanx. Although there were only two thousand dwarves, they could hold a large number of enemies, without moving their position even one step. They also had four ballistas, who will be shooting from behind the phalanx.
The power of the siege weapons of dwarves, could not be underestimated, on the contrary.
The dwarven catapults, could shoot three gigantic rocks at once, causing much havoc on the enemy lines.
And the ballista dwarves, even though in the first instance, they do not do such a severe damage. Each bolt fired by these, could pierce up to four enemies at once. In addition, its advantage in front of the catapults, is that they took much less time to recharge, so they could do more continuous damage.
For two days, since they arrived, Aldarion and Feladrias, along with their men, helped dwarves to prepare everything.
When they reached the camp on the first day, Barab directed Aldarion and Feladrias to the command tent, where Azaghâl, the Lord of Belegost, was and introduced them. Since then, the three have coordinated very well, to make the preparations for the defense.
At first glance, it seemed to Aldarion that Azaghâl was a dwarf man like the one described in the books. Stubborn and obstinate, but as they began to speak, Aldarion realized that, while true, he was a good ruler. Because of his ideas and plans, the dwarf lord showed, that he knew what he was doing.
Azaghâl could be considered a dwarf, already in his old age. His beard and hair, were already completely white, and his face showed wrinkles.
Seeing how Aldarion watched the dwarf lord, he went to his ear and whispered. - "Do not be fooled by his appearance. Under his armor, he hides a body with terrifying force. He is a great warrior".
Aldarion was very surprised by what the elven captain told him, but he did not show any proof of it. He remained stoic and they continued talking.
On the third day since they arrived, all the leaders of the alliance, were gathered in the command tent in the camp. Feladrias, as representative of the elves of Lindon; Aldarion, as representative of the Dunedain of the North; and finally Azaghâl Lord of Belegost.
Aldarion had sent some of his rangers to explore, with the order that, as soon as they spotted the enemy army, they would report, immediately.
And it was that, at that moment, one of the explorers returned with news. The ranger entered the shop and approached Aldarion, and whispered a few words in his ear. When he finished, he waved goodbye and left the store.
"So, what do your scouts say?" - The dwarf lord was very direct and asked. Feladrias, who did not say anything, also urged Aldarion to speak with his eyes.
"My scouts say that the enemy army will arrive in about three days". - Aldarion took a break and went on. - "They have also told me that their numbers reach about twenty thousand soldiers".
"Twenty thousand?" - This surprised even the dwarf lord. - "This is going to be more difficult than I had imagined".
"That's not true at all". - Aldarion interrupted. - "It is true that, there are many, but most of his troops, could be considered militias. The real soldiers are only a small percentage, not to mention the elites".
"Aldarion is right. Now they have high morale because of their numbers and their recent conquests, but if we manage to instill fear in them, the scenario will change. " - Feladrias continued talking.
The dwarf lord remained pensive, as if he were weighing something. - "Okay, we will continue with the established plan. Let men be prepared!"
